  • Pastor Colin Smith preached the sermon "Assurance Grows As You Obey God's Commands" on 1 John 2:3-6 at The Orchard EFC in suburban Chicago in September 2024.
    1 John 2:3-6
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

Great passage to memorize for evangelism. So many people falsely believe they are saved because they said a prayer, and that's it.

So, I understand that when a man lusts after a woman in his heart, he has already committed adultery with her even though he has physically done nothing. So also if I desire to murder someone without actually doing it, I am guilty of murder. So if I desire with all my heart to do all God's commandments and to walk as Jesus walked in perfect obedience to the Father, can it also be said of me that I have already done the act even though I haven't physically kept all His commands? So if I lust after obedience to God and lust to do His will always in my heart, I have already done all that I so desire to do. So take heart, for if the desire is there, the completion of it is there also. ❤❤❤

I do not believe this at all. The desire to serve God with obedience will be fulfilled in actuality by the enabling power and grace of the indwelling Holy Spirit. You can't add to the Word of God what is not stated. Things we truly desire we find a way to obtain them, and our hearts surely can not deceive God but can certainly deceive us as it is desperately wicked above all things. When we truly desire to please God, we will do so

@@sanr6816 well, I truly desire to be perfectly holy and never sin, but 1st John says, if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. If we say that we have not sinned, we make God a liar. So then, will I ever in this life be perfectly holy? Can I live a sinless life in this world? I do believe that God will give us grace to live a holy life according to the new covenant, but then I hear that we will not live perfectly sinless lives. But I do believe scripture is clear in that it says this, "For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have." (2nd Corinthians 8:12). And so, if I am willing to perfectly obey God and do His will but am hindered by the weakness of my flesh, is it not therefore accepted according to my desire? I don't want to go against what is revealed in God's Word!!

@sherry3422 that passage is speaking about giving of resources idk how you apply that to pursuing a holy life because you certainly don't need to be spirit filled to give. God sees how sincere we are in our desires.
