      You could use an enormous mortar and pestle to pound the rice, but anything that can lightly crush the rice will work. Keep in mind that all rice grows as brown rice, so you will need to process the rice more if you want white rice! Hope this helps

    With how expensive groceries are getting, I should TOTALLY try this.
    It's below freezing here in KY, but I may start by growing them indoors under a grow light so I don't have to wait till summer.
    Once summer comes, rice should grow really nicely. Temperatures here routinely get into the 90s in the summer, and I use a sump pump and a couple hundred feet of corrugated pipe to prevent my yard from turning into a swamp.

    I live in Alberta Canada. I purchased organic brown rice form a big box store and soaked it in water for 24 hrs (tap water). I fished through it and picked out anything that turned green. I layered that in paper towel and in a plastic bag. Most of them sprouted!!!! I have just placed them in soaked garden dirt and placed them in a window. I have done this before and forgot tow water them so I hope that I will be able to bring these to fruition this time. I have a greenhouse and I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    I have 2 acres, VERY dark loam soil, and red clay subsoil, in Zone 6a, with extremely poor drainage and full sun. I'm looking for a staple crop for about 0.1 acre of my land that can handle waterlogged soil, and possibly consume water. I'm also going to grow wheat so I'll need something that can take up excess water.
    Plus my wife really loves rice. Definitely going to give rice a try.

    • @georgevanhoose6333
      @georgevanhoose6333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@earthangeltribe Did that as well. So far it's going... alright. It's been dryer than anticipated so I've had to water rigorously during the dry periods. But the rice itself has done its job of taking up excess water, and it has thus far helped remove excess groundwater near my wheat when it does rain. The weather has followed a pattern of staying dry for two weeks and then letting loose with a half-inch or even a full inch in one downpour. The rice helps regulate available water in the soil so the other crops don't drown.

    I'm guessing you're in the Triad. Here in Charlotte, we are closer to an 8A/9B. I am going to grow mine next year in those plastic kiddie pools you can get at Walmart grocery stores for around $8. If I can ever move up to my redwood preserve in Stokes Co., I have a few acres of bottomlands I can easily flood for a farm to fork supply. Any suggestions for a "gourmet variety?" It was supposed to be a nice creekside grove of 1,200 dawn redwoods, but the beavers have destroyed that scenario. This is the next best one I can think of.

    When do you know the rice is ready to be harvest? When it turns brown? Do you have to handpick the rice? I tried to grow rice in the past two years but they never even germinate. I still have some rice seeds from MIgardener so I’m going to try again this year after watching your video. Thanks. I just bought your book and love your videos as well!

      I will post videos when that time comes around. But yes the seed turns from green to yellow and that the time for eating harvest. I’ve been letting my seed get fully mature to save for replanting the past few years.

    Will the bugs attack the newly sprouted rice? Also I raise Japanese coturnix quails and have a large container full of their poop. Will that be ok to use and also pour like organic potting soil? I’m thinking of growing my own rice outdoors in the summer and add some rice fish so the mosquitoes won’t get out of control 😂

    Thanks a lot for this video! It’s very encouraging! I’m a Hare Krsna, so we all really like Basmati rice the best! Where would I be able to get Basmati rice seed?
    Have you tasted your rice? Do you know how to make brown rice to white rice?
    Thanks again! Hare Krsna

      Sourcing rice seed has been a challenge lately. I’d look on google to see if there are any sources. I’ve not found basmati seed anywhere.
