I lost my mom when i was 15. Im 29 now. It took me awhile but believe me that things get better. Emotions come and go in waves and you just have to ride them. Just like the rest of life, there will be times where it's easy, and times where its hard. You have to think, he loved you. He wanted to be there for you. Be happy that you got to see him before he went some people aren't fortunate enough to be around their loved ones every day. I wasn't fortunate enough. My mother and i had a huge falling out over her drug usage and we hadnt talked in almost a year when i found out she passed away. There's always a silver lining. You can be like your dad for your future children. Being in their lives. Loving them like your father loved you. That's how i made it. I love my little girls and everything I do is for them. As a mum, I just want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I had 2 stillborn babies, but that is not as bad as losing a living child who you have had, known, have memories with. My sister lost her only child at 18 to suicide which was worse than losing the babies, to me. We lost a Christophor and have a Matthew in the family, (my other sister's son) who we also nearly lost after being hit by a car when he was 15, after Christophor died. We thought we would go mad if we lost him too Thankfully eventually he recovered but I'll never forget that terror. My love to you and your beloved Matthew, his soul will never leave your side.
I love this song. It is one of my favorite songs. When I was younger, I always liked this song, but I never loved it to the point where I would listen to it a lot, that was until my dad died a year ago from cancer, he died September 28th, 2023, which is coincidentally the month of September. It was a tough time for me and still is. I turned to music among other things to try and cope with it, that’s when I found myself coming back to this song. This time upon listening, it really resonated deeply with me in a way I didn’t expect. The context, emotion, lyrics and feeling of loss just connected with me. It felt like the perfect song for me and it made me feel closer to my father. I have a very huge appreciation for this song and I listened to this song multiple times over and over again. It really got me through a lot of the hard times, this song means a lot to me and it’s my favorite Green Day song for that reason. I can never thank Green Day enough for creating this song, it has helped me so much and it is continuing to help me. It also lead me to get into more of Green Day’s discography. At the time I only listened to a few songs by them besides this song, I heard American Idiot, Holiday, 21 Guns, Basket Case and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. My knowledge of the band was only really just some of the hits, but now I have listened to the entirety of Dookie, American Idiot, Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, Kerplunk, 39/Smooth, Revolution Radio, Saviors, 21st century breakdown and more, they’re my favorite band now, actually. Without this song, I would’ve not gotten into more of their catalog and find other great songs by them.

I went 3 ways with this song. It came out the last year of high school for me and I loved it. Then a year later my father past, and this song hurt too much to hear. I know that Billy wrote this song in memory of his father, who died when he was only 10 years old in the month of September. I lost my father three days ago to cancer. It was stage one, but the type of cancer he had was rare and the location of the cancer on his body didn’t help either. It took a heavy toll on him and he was too weak to take the chemo anymore. One thing to remember is that we can at least be thankful of the memories we got to make with our loved ones. Things may seem bleak right now, but some day, you may get to start your own family and find yourself in the position as a parent where you can dedicate all your time to your children, just to make your dad proud. Hello! Last year at the end of September 2023 it dawned in me that I finished my last summer in the 20s....got sad somehow and and it's a bit sad that this time won't never return😢
I started listening to this song when it was popular when I was a kid but it’s been a while now since I’ve listened to it again until now, I remember it showing up in a documentary about Hurricane Katrina and that’s something I associate this song with.

I lost my father just a few days ago on September 1st. I've never felt more devastated in my life and this hits harder than it ever has before. As a mum, I just want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I had 2 stillborn babies, but that is not as bad as losing a living child who you have had, known, have memories with. My sister lost her only child at 18 to suicide which was worse than losing the babies, to me. We lost a Christophor and have a Matthew in the family, (my other sister's son) who we also nearly lost after being hit by a car when he was 15, after Christophor died. We thought we would go mad if we lost him too Thankfully eventually he recovered but I'll never forget that terror. My love to you and your beloved Matthew, his soul will never leave your side.

I love this song. It is one of my favorite songs. When I was younger, I always liked this song, but I never loved it to the point where I would listen to it a lot, that was until my dad died a year ago from cancer, he died September 28th, 2023, which is coincidentally the month of September. It was a tough time for me and still is. I turned to music among other things to try and cope with it, that’s when I found myself coming back to this song. This time upon listening, it really resonated deeply with me in a way I didn’t expect. The context, emotion, lyrics and feeling of loss just connected with me. It felt like the perfect song for me and it made me feel closer to my father. I have a very huge appreciation for this song and I listened to this song multiple times over and over again. It really got me through a lot of the hard times, this song means a lot to me and it’s my favorite Green Day song for that reason. I can never thank Green Day enough for creating this song, it has helped me so much and it is continuing to help me. It also lead me to get into more of Green Day’s discography. At the time I only listened to a few songs by them besides this song, I heard American Idiot, Holiday, 21 Guns, Basket Case and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. My knowledge of the band was only really just some of the hits, but now I have listened to the entirety of Dookie, American Idiot, Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, Kerplunk, 39/Smooth, Revolution Radio, Saviors, 21st century breakdown and more, they’re my favorite band now, actually. Without this song, I would’ve not gotten into more of their catalog and find other great songs by them.
Lost my father on September 9th 2006, when I was 5. Whenever I think of him, the two songs that pop up in my head are this, and shine on you crazy diamond. I sometimes wonder what he would think seeing me as a grown man, would he be proud? disappointed in what I become? I hope its the former. I only have good memories of him, always taking me everywhere he went with him, tickling me, him and my mom holding my hands on both sides when we crossed the street. he was a good father to me, and I hope that he is in a good place if there is an afterlife.

I went 3 ways with this song. It came out the last year of high school for me and I loved it. Then a year later my father past, and this song hurt too much to hear. I avoided listiening to it for years. Years. I would tear up. but years past. I heard it on the radio radio, and since I couldnt change it (passanger,) I realized it didnt make me cry anymore. I know that Billy wrote this song in memory of his father, who died when he was only 10 years old in the month of September.
I lost my father three days ago to cancer. It was stage one, but the type of cancer he had was rare and the location of the cancer on his body didn’t help either. It took a heavy toll on him and he was too weak to take the chemo anymore. He literally died on the first day of September in his sleep in the middle of the night.
Listening to the song on repeat, has been therapeutic for me.
Next year will mark 7 years since I lost my father. Found this song on a whim after it popped into my head again after years and I couldn’t help but let out a few tears.

2016 is a good year
September 2019 is gone and will never come back. I don't know why but this is the time of the year when I just listen to this song and remember the good times I had last summer. This is one of my favourite songs even if it makes me feel sad because it reminds me of how fast time goes and that you should never forget what you've been through because that makes you who you really are. See you in 12 months people have a nice year.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Loss is never an easy thing to deal with. I lost my grandmother after the new year. I was thankful she was around for the holiday and new year. One thing to remember is that we can at least be thankful of the memories we got to make with our loved ones. I may not know your father, but I believe he may hope you can remember the good days even in the bad, and just never forget there are good days.. Things may seem bleak right now, but some day, you may get to start your own family and find yourself in the position as a parent where you can dedicate all your time to your children, just to make your dad proud. Make him proud, make him happy you stuck around for him, so he can see that didn't completely lose hope.. Life is a beautiful gift, don't take it for granted.
