I saw Nightwish with Tarja perform this song live in Germany (Oceanborn Tour) back in the days and it was just... enchanting. I was in the front row and when the song got to it's faster segment she looked at the audience, encouraged us to clap along and i swear she looked for a brief moment right into my eyes. I will never Forget this concert, her majestic Stage presents, her incredibel voice and those stunning beautiful eyes.

Tarja received several types of education. In high school, she studied at the art school in Savonlinna in her homeland in Finland, then at the Sibelius Academy, the largest and one of the best music universities in all of Europe. Then after graduating from the Sibelius Academy she entered the Karlsruhe Higher School of Music in Germany.
P.S. Tarja is a lyric soprano with a voice range of over three octaves.

Tarja's first foundation lie in church singing and her first singing performance was at the age of three. She would continue in the church choir and then in school. After primary school she went on to Secondary School of Art and Music in Savonlinna. There "The Phantom of the Opera" would become one of her favourite songs to sing and that's why she decided to continue her singing education in Opera. She then continued to Sibelius Academy which is ranked 13th best in the world in performing arts education. In 2000 she entered Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, which is a much lower ranked university, but still enjoyes a really good reputation much to the fact that they have a very low student count, which leads to more personal education. Tarja went there to gain a formal education, which she had not been able to gain at Sibelius because of Nightwish.

"Walking in the Air" is a song I just barely missed in its original iteration before I got interested in any music. I did not see the "Snowman" cartoon until my grown years! However, I must admit the song was truly moving as sung by a boy soprano, and NIGHTWISH (Tuomas) were clever enough to just tinker with it a little bit to give it that NIGHTWISH spin. I can almost imagine a very young Tuomas at his window gazing into a winter's night, having been exposed to this song. Those are the moments the fantasy is lit.
Regarding the appreciation of Tarja's vocals now and then, I have my two cents to add, and I am pretty sure she is possibly at a higher level of technique currently. But she just has not found a comparable songwriter to replace Tuomas... irony of life. This is an arguable opinion, but not one of Tarja's solo albums had on me an impact of a "Wishmaster", or "Once".
While we are at it: there has to be the space for "Swanheart" and for "Wishmaster" the song somewhere in your plans... Two extremely different specimens of beauty in NIGHTWISH catalogue, and no experience of the band is complete without those...
...to think that we are hardly one-third through the MIGHTWISH catalogue! [Mmm, I just saw my typo there, uh I guess I'm leaving it as is. :))) \m/] So much yet to discover. And hardly a lesser song among them.

As someone already mentioned before, this is a cover of the original song from the animated Christmas movie, The Snowman. While this was huge in the UK and the most of Europe, it received minimal play here in the US. This aired on Nickelodeon back in the early 1980s (I saw this as a 9 year old in 1983), but more importantly, Walking in the Air was used a lot for Holiday commercials by Toys 'R Us. That's how many people discovered the song, back in 1985-1987. From there, it fell into obscurity until Nightwish released it on their second album, Oceanborn, in 1998, and performed it here. What sucks is that until Dark Passion Play in 2007, no Nightwish song or album charted in the US, despite those albums (5 of them) being certified platinum multiple times.
Back to the song. As you can see, barring a couple of vocal embellishments, they stayed true to the original. This was probably the most popular version of the song (and the one that resonates with people) after the original. It's that good.

Finland is full of inspiring rock singers. If you want a small surprise try Battle Beast's Black Ninja and their cheesy 80's style power rock. Their singer Noora rocks! Or how about cinematic metal, Dark Sarah and their Sarah Brightman-worthy singer Heidi singing Memories Fall with another heavy metal soprano or her singing with JP Leppäluoto Dancing with Dragon, which is a treat. And there is another great voice singing in Amorphis, Tomi Joutsen whose cleans are truly velvety and growls the best in industry, a true nature force. Try their Brother and Sister which is a bonus track from their latest album. There you will hear what a nature force growl means.

Great reaction, Big Brain Singer. Thank you! Tarja Turunen herself always said that she only uses a pure classical technique for classical concerts, for rock concerts Tarja uses a classicaly infused technique but not purely classical. As the years passed by, Tarja started to experiment more with her voice in heavy rock/metal concerts and sound less classical on those, BUT she also started to get better and better on her classical concerts which are foccused in Lied repertoire and chamber music (that was the specialization Tarja studied at Karlsruhe Music University).

This is one of the coversongs of Nightwish that I dont really care for even though Tarjas young voice is beautiful. It is because of my long relationship with the original animation Snowman where the song comes from (since 1983). The Snowman animation is british. It aired first time in Finland in 1983 Christmas eve morning show where Santa Claus (Joulupukki) shows cartoons for children and you could phone to the show and talk to him, I did ones as a child. I watched the show back then too, loved the music on it straight away. Second time it was on tv 1989 and from 1992 it has been aired every christmas in Finland so it is a christmas tradition now as is the sequel Snowman and Snowdog too since 2012.
You can watch both animations on youtube. Finnish people celebrate Christmas kind of melancholy way, with our loved ones and remembering those who are not amongs us anymore. Thats why this animation has made its way to our hearts. This is the one I saw for the first time, in love with it ever since.

So my Walking in the Air song is more traditional one, last year I listened to this version performed by a very talented finnish singer.

Tarja really has an amazing voice. One of her best work after Nightwish was the amazing Christmas album she did a few years ago, well worth checking out although Christmas just went by. Someone mentioned Jarkko Ahola in the chat My Way, with Northern Kings, check that out, anything with him is good.

Floor had to take that material in wholly different directions to make it her own, meaning, these versions remain Tarja's.

I'm not sure if that was "Germany's fault", but more like Tarja's or Tuomas' decision to have less operatic sound on their later albums. They got so much negative feedback from being too operatic, that maybe they tried to find a compromise, where all those who loved this tone are still satisfied, but they also get more of those who don't like too operatic sound. And I think they pretty much did found that "sweet spot". But I'm with you on this, that Tarja's voice sounded (even) better on these old albums and live's.

Love the kimono! This is definitely a great Tarja song. Are you familiar with the original song? It is part of the Christmas cartoon "The Snowman" from 1982. Originally it was sung by Robert Peter Auty, a choirboy who sang at St Paul's Cathedral. At the age of 13, he sang "Walking in the Air", the theme song of the 1982 animated film. He is now an operatic tenor who has worked with most of the major opera companies in Britain and a number of companies in continental Europe. Very interesting to hear your comments about opera training. You always have so much information to add to the commentary. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day my friend. Mine is already starting on a great note spending some time having a coffee with you. Peace. 🎶🎶🎶😊👑🙏☝

Floor is really a tech nerd but her voice color is boring. But she can do a lot with it. Tarja has an incredibly beautiful, special voice but is technically not always very good. Sometimes the goat stands on her vocal cords and you can hear her scream. The shakira effect. Fortunately this is not always the case and if I had to choose between the two (fortunately I don't have to) I would always choose Tarja because her voice is incredibly beautiful. Dark and velvety.

Oh Yes give me Tarja before Germany, she sounded like a pure Mezzo or even Dramatic soprano. Had she the fortune of finding a good ol' bel canto vocal pedagogue that knew the raw jewel he had in his hands, she would have been next Callas. Working with that voice would be a dream. She has a raw, powerful, dark, sombre and round timbre by itsel that Savonlinna and Sibelius helped and very well bring to the surface, it is absolutely exquisite and unique. Unfortunately, modern opera schools transform all voices into woofy lyric sopranos that sing like if falsetto is the only thing that matters.

Oh if only I had heard **this** as my first song from Nightwish. Unfortunately, my first experience with them was when they became big in Europe during the early 2000s with their albums Wishmaster and Once, where Tarja's voice sounded completely flattened and "overproduced". This had the effect of making the whole thing sound cheap and cheesy to me. Not "metal" enough for my metal ear (coming from years of listening to Thrash metal), not "classical" enough for my classical ear (coming from 15 years of playing the violin at that point and knowing basically every major opera out there by heart). Needless to say, my opinion of Nightwish wasn't the highest. The "misheard lyrics" videos and Tarja's rather thick accent didn't really help either.
But that all changed when I discovered to awesomeness personified that is Floor Jansen about 2 years ago. Also, the whole band sounds a lot different now than I remember them from back then. They sound and behave a lot more mature now, and less "emo" than they used to.
