  • one of the most-used tasks in cognitive psychology, the Stroop task is still going strong after 80+ years. this video gives an example of what it looks like including a few variations on the original, along with an explanation of how/why it works.

A BRIEF, PERFECT EXPLANATION. 100% Accurate, but most people seem to disregard a beautiful course in the world - Psychology.

Great video. Thanks for the variety of uses of the Stroop test showing varieties of data.
I have students use a Box-Whisker plot to analyze the congruent and incongruent data.
I like how using foreign words ( Russian ) with the colors shows no difference EXCEPT IF YOUR A SPY !!!

No mention of the process which underlies this? Existing neurological pathways are created and then strengthened / weakened based on the frequency of use, and the magnitude of the emotional experience which are associated with a behaviour.
Reading a word is a behaviour that has been gradually strengthened over time, whereas in the case of sexual assault victims, the pathway may have been strengthened tremendously due to a singular acute [negative] emotional experience. In such a case, the brain begins actively checking if the external stimuli presented pose what is essentially a threat to our survival. It's looking to avoid those incredibly negative feelings.
Neurons fire along the path of least resistance -- that is to say that your subconscious will use the most strengthened path depending on the external stimuli presented.
This process begins automatically when the external stimuli triggers the neurons to fire, and the delay found in the stroop effect is as a result of consciously focusing on interpreting the information in a different way to the strengthened pathway. We must first interrupt the automatic response given by the limbic system before we can perform our intended task. If there are no existing neurological pathways (behaviours/responses) which get triggered by the presented stimuli, there will be no delay.
Interestingly, we are able to consciously create new, conflicting neurological pathways which serve us better. This is the process when forming any new behaviour. At first it feels foreign but the more it is practiced, the more it becomes autopilot. As we practice reading the colours of the words, not the words themselves, we reduce the response time delay as we begin to strengthen those new pathways.
And if we were to anchor this process with actuely positive emotional responses (reward system) on occasions where we successfully read the colour correctly, we would accelerate this process.
I believe those with PTSD can, and should be helped in this way -- constantly reprogram the way in which they interpret the external stimuli which triggers them until those pathways are more powerful than the original ones created by the trauma.

Thank you. I want to know why language students overall constantly ignore the target language and indeed the learning goals. They are either mentally "switched off", especially in regards to listening to the teacher, that's me, or are busy translating or explaining the material in(to) their native language.

I failed this at a test for a job..... I dont understand how, but now in the later time I dont have any problems on doing it. There were some boxed around some words for a switch. There you had to say the word, and then keep reading the color fonts and not the words... Got 20 erros in probably 40 total.......

Kind of reminds me of this whole trans thing. They call themselves this or that, but your eyes and ears say something else. That’s why it’s so absurd to hold misgendering against someone.
