Can't wait to see more! We were there 2 times on our recent FL visit. We actually upgraded our ticket to a membership cause we will be back in Nov and figure we can fit in a KSC day. We saw gators too. I will say I was just a little disappointed that we did not see any armadillos. The Atlantis exhibit what really cool.

With the vessel going to Mars I imagine they'll have as few detaching modules as possible and just make them bigger with a greater fuel capacity; it's going to be really heavy whichever way you do so from an engineering perspective you want the least number of detachable modules to lower the risk of faults- the big problems with older crafts were often to do with detaching and fuel siphoning issues so they've probably learnt to keep the jigsaw puzzle of mechanised pieces to a smart, efficient minimal.

Kennedy Space Centre was an absolute blast when my family and I went. We've seen the shuttle launch twice - when it was in service ofc, had a meal with an astronaut - didn't have the foggiest who he was though, and had a tour around the whole site. I've still got a entrance ticket on my wall from a visit back on the 6th Sept '95 - was only $4 for a child xD

So how's the Florida weather? For me there is 2-3 feet of snow outside and it was 18 degrees out last night. It could be worse though. We didn't have flooding or lose power. Florida sure does sound nice now though.

Say, have you guys ever seen the Kitchen Nightmare's episode "Amy's Baking Company"?That episode is so hilarious how the owners had run their business to the ground and they actually asked Gordon Ramsey for help but when he came and tried to help they either ignored him or told him that he's wrong. Thankfully though they are closed now and the episode can been seen on TH-cam.

The rocket separations are weight and fuel based. It takes so much fuel to get the rocket so high, once there, they have to abandoned the rest of the rocket because it is added weight. To get into Earth's, they have to be going about 5 miles a second. To get past it and out of the gravitational pull they have to go even faster. The first rocket stage is to get them into the outer atmosphere and they literally are just tanks and propellant. Once that is burned away it just adds weight to the overall rocket so they separate making the whole thing lighter and requiring less fuel to reach the appropriate speed to break out of our gravitational pull. Once outside of the pull it require little fuel in space to move even that giant rocket around. Most of the fuel left over (once we stopped using capsules and started using shuttles) was for getting back into the pull of gravity and landing.
It is a very exact science to decided how much fuel gets them so far and then once that weight is dropped, how much to get them to the next stage. With the Mars trip they are coming up with new fuels and propellant types to get us there. It is quite fascinating.

They'd probably put it inside. I'm sure it will have a little door that will open to keep it in. I know with a Mars rover, they made sure it was under the maximum rate because they knew it would be bringing back Mars rocks. We'll see though.

You should come up to Virginia. I live right next to the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center. They have the Space Shuttle Discovery and a SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde and tons of jets and rockets. You would totally geek out there.

Mars Rover, Mars Rover, how do you come over? You're way too cool for typical Rocket Fuel.
Those suckers are Nuclear! Plutonium-238 baby! Has a half-life of 87.7 years with a slow decay rate.
The SLS (Space Launch System) and the Mars Rover are two different entities. The SLS replaced the Space Shuttles. The SLS will send out a NEA (Near Earth Asteroid) Scout to investigate asteroids, not capture them.
The next SLS is scheduled to launch in 2018.
The next Mars Rover is scheduled for launch in 2020.
