Merry Christmas! I didn't have the calendar to drink along with, but I still enjoyed this series. It was a fun way to learn more about understanding a whiskey and it was cool to see what kind of quality the calendar had to offer.
A few things. One definitely do this again and I am game for whatever calendar you choose as long as its something we can easily get. Two I love the idea of different types of episodes and perhaps more focus on whiskeys that are easier to get a hold of so we can drink and explore along. I think regular blind tasting only make sense if we can drink along so if you do them more often that's my only suggestion.
Good month to drink along! I had the regular Drinks by the Dram calendar, very different, just a couple of overlaps, JW Green and The Singleton. The rest were very varied, a few from "That Boutique-y" and "&" distillers, as well as lots of global stuff (a great Finnish rye, "Kyrö"). Thanks for the great stuff! I had a blast trying things I'd never think of or see anywhere else. What a great tasting format.
Merry Christmas Daniel , my husband I enjoyed this series a lot. We have missed the vault time with you. Would love once a week or so in the vault going over whiskeys . Educating us about ones we may not know about, blinds like you did through this. Rare bottles and then comparing to something we might be able to get our hands on. We have been sipping bourbon today with our note book and having a great time! We watch a lot of channels and the one thing you have that none of the other ones really do is walking through the journey of the sip . You give the best tasting notes and comprehensive understanding of what is being tasted and why you are getting the flavors you are. Barrel Chats are fun but it’s nice to nerd out a bit too . There isn’t much out there for the nerds.
This is a great idea! I think Daniel's concerns about blind tasting videos being too niche are justified if those were the majority of new videos coming out, but if it could replace Hidden/Gifted drams Fridays, or alternate between blind tasting and one of those, that would be very interesting. Seeing the deductive tasting in action, especially when it's not connected to any biases of brands, has been one of the best things about these videos, and I'd love to see more! Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and your husband! Cheers!
The part of this I liked the most was your explanation of what you were tasting, because it's educational. I think whatever you do next if it adds to my knowledge of whiskey and how to taste whisky (yeah I did that intentionally) I'll be an eager follower.
"They gave us that box for free. That is the only money our channel got out of this." If that includes the content, that's pretty good sponsorship right there.
Merry Christmas mate. You had me thinking it could have been a dud bottle. Sometimes those minitures ( particularly if lying down) can damaged or take on the the cardboard seal taste. Your summation at 10:12 " .....a big step (pause) 'away' ...." was a master stroke. Well done mate... credibility not only with your sommolier skills, but also your marketing skills.
Just got back from Christmas with my family and sippin’ a Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2013, sláinte everybody. Thanks for the very entertaining advent series. You’re one of my favorite whiskynerds Daniel. Merry Christmas to all!
Blind tasting format lets you show off your mad skills and I mean it in the most respectable way. It is not just entertaining but gives an insight how to approach a whisky from a scratch. Provided you respect what's in the glass and have all the markers prepared, meaning you know your shit. Merry christmas and kind regards!
Outstanding as always Daniel and Merry Christmas to you & yours. I'd consider myself a "nerd" and I really liked this blind format. I will get whatever advent calendar you select for 2025 to really "play along" but watching you do these blinds was a blast. As soon as you said today's was a muted and a blend, I immediately thought Johnny Blue. Your explanation was spot on, darn marketers. What a massive disappointment/let down. Thank & keep up the great work. Cheers...
My wife and I loved the advent calendar series. Our only regret is that we could only follow along vicariously instead of literally by having our own Master of Malt advent calendar. So, if you are going to do it again, please, please, please let us know well in advance so we can buy the same as you and follow along. By the way, my wife was greatly amused by my guessing which whisky you were tasting by your descriptions. I did pretty well for a guy who has negligible ability to smell and taste since birth.
Living in Virginia US and having severe limitations on what I can access due to state-level control on spirits, this is one of the few ways for me to hear about whiskey that I will never personally try. I am still new to the world of whiskey and hearing you describe what you taste and the comparisons to other options has been very informative. I also enjoy listening to you talk about something you are so passionate about. I was excited when you nailed what this one was simply by your reasoning. In other words, your ability to inform and entertain is what has me subscribed. Merry Christmas and I look forward to more content in 2025.
😂😂😂 I was screaming Johnny Walker Blue … before you said it! Your method tree steered you in the right direction. I love this format. I also like when you give your thoughts on a different subjects and come back to the whisky. I also like the history of whisky also. But that’s just me. I’m such a nerd! Thanks Daniel. Love your videos.
Having watched the whiskey tribe blind tasting of the Johnny Walker line up i was guessing Blue pretty early in the video. For a Christmas whiskey even if the consumer doesn't like it, they get to say "hey ive had that thing". And it would be something fun to share purely due to price since most people will never try it on their own.
I really love this format! I think if the focus is on your review/impressions of it rather than trying to guess what it is, that helps prevent it from coming across as showing off "whiskey tasting skills".
Loved this series, fun to watch along with the calendar. It was nice to learn about how to go into a blind tasting and deducing the whisky. I don't think it should be the new format, but I do think it would be fun to have a blind once a month or so. It's a helpful still to keep focusing on.
Great fun and thank you. I think a good thing to try is maybe get three expressions of a particular style or region, (Cheap, Mid & High) and try then with friends as a blind tasting, you could for this as a calendar Post what's coming up, so everyone can try along, for the most part maybe...
Loved it! I think doing the blind tasting is also great for the non nerdy people as well. It gives them ideas of what some people are looking for or not looking for or things to keep in mind when they are drinking something similar. Maybe start with bringing in budget/common whiskeys blind ( A, B, C etc. comparison), then bring in the taste and compare of other's or just figuring out what's different. Either way, keep it going with what ever you guys need. Enjoy the Holidays and safe new year
It’s been a pleasure Daniel to see you master that calendar You are very good and so enthousiaste doing those crazy blinds. Cheers to you and have a merry Christmas 🥃
I’m not a nerd, just a lover of whiskey, and enjoyed the advent series. I agree that including the community would/could improve the viewer experience. How you’d do it and keep it as honest as you’ve done here, I have no clue.
Merry Christmas Daniel. You are right about the Blind tastings. It is better when others can play along. As far as videos, don't go for a one size fits all. Do a bit of everything. Good videos with more reach would be something like Best (insert whiskey here) for beginners, or if you like this style try this. That would work great and hasn't been done here since the early days. Oh maybe a how to blend for beginners, bring on Emma or Irene Either way enjoy the process. It is always a pleasure, cheers 🥃
A couple thoughts and ideas. I question the idea of having a “nerdier” calendar next year UNLESS the goal is to identify similar whiskies that are commonly available to approximate ones that are harder to find. The trick would be to identify the common analogues before you know what whisky it is. This idea could include home-blending to get the approximate vibe of the whiskey being tried. The other idea is to have a calendar of widely available whiskies. Bonus idea: less scotch-centric. The calendar should have more stuff and styles from all over the world.
This series was very impressive and I looked forward to a new episode. For me the format was fun, altough I do not have the calendar. I tried to make an educuated guess based on your tellings. I guessed the Jameson 18, the Mortlach 16, and - to some extent - the 2nd Singleton (although I read the word 'diageo' by accident in the comments before I watched the video) and I also guessed the Johnnie Walker Blue. There is btw another line of deduction: after the JW green and gold there sinply must be JW blue. So I guessed four based on your detailed - impressive - descriptions; but I never tasted them myself, I just was aware of their existence. Grtz from the Netherlands!
My MoM Scotch calendar shows up Friday. That won't really mesh with the traditional Advent Calendar timeframe, but I can't wait to have the opportunity to try 25 different Scotches! Merry Christmas to all, even if it is a little late.
I really would have thought my palate was shot from all the food today, and other whiskey, had I not been watching this with you, where you had the same initial impression. Please let’s do this again next December!! If 2 whiskeys out of this box were a bit of a flop, that’s a good run. I like your typical format of story telling, I don’t think I’d want to watch a regular series of blind tastings, particularly if I was not drinking along. As for what advent calendar is selected, as long as it’s broadly available and hopefully mostly scotch.
Merry Christmas 🎁⛄ thanks for doing this. I watched every single day it was awesome journey. I never tried jw blue, but I don't wanna spend that insane price for non age stated blended scotch. The best jw I tried was the green one, but it's malt blend. Thanks Daniel, hope you are having a great holiday 🙏
Merry Christmas! My brother and I did a bottle exchange this year. We got to drink compass box spice tree, still Austin straight and aberlour speyside special release great Christmas so far 😁
Loved following the series. I was kind of afraid this was going to happen when you came across the gold and green... You know in an exclusive one the big one is coming somewhere at the end then. Anyway, I'm enjoying a Mortlach vintage 2008 SV 15yo watching you finding out this disappointing ending. Merry Christmas tho and thanks for going through these!
I really liked the videos. The Masters of malt advent calendar is probably a little commercialized. But it’s difficult to get something that I can share at the same time. If you find a better option, that’s great love to share this with you day by day.. merry Christmas
I'll be honest, on the day you did the one that turned out to be [don't wanna spoil it but same brand], I said to myself, "I bet the very last one will be [don't wanna spoil it for anyone, but yeah, I was right]."
I really did enjoy the calendar this year. I got to taste drams that were not available or over budget for the price of a single bottle. What would you think of live streaming the tastings and letting the MBs chime in with what we are tasting?
Enjoyed the format... loved drinking along with you blind... Except for 2 of the days which were spoiled because I saw Peter van Jaarsveldt's Facebook posts about them before your video dropped 😂 I was also greatly disappointed in Day 25... thought Day 24 was VASTLY superior. If a nerdier version of this thing exists, I'd be all in for that... but I'd be surprised if we can find something that isn't controlled by the marketing gurus who don't actually know/care about whiskey. 😏 Merry Christmas Daniel (and Emma)... hope the day was relaxing & filled with love & family. 🥃
Agreed on thoughts for next season and advent. A lot of the videos I skipped nosing segment to get to tasting. As for JW Blue it's good but severely overhyped. On the other hand I can't think of one Christmas where I got everything on a wish list. Merry Christmas and I hope to keep you on my daily watch for TH-cam.
Possible thought for a new season: Could you do a similar style of video, but not blind, and take us through a set of 3 or 5 episodes at a time, using attainable whiskies to give an overview of a specific category? I.E. a five bottle overview of Taiwanese whisky…
Thank you for all the videos and the other one is this year. I can't wait to see what happens to the channel in 2025. I hope you also every one of the academy and distillery, your families and friends oh I had a good holiday 🥃 Sláinte
Happy Hanukkah! This was a great run! But I agree that a weekly blind tasting doesn’t sound great. I would like to hear you do some comparisons of the hidden drams stuff - what can we get that is close to what you’re receiving from the companies? Thanks so much for a great calendar!
I threw a guess out that this was a somewhat older Macallen. Just where it was the last one, I figured a bigger name. I was on the right track, Macallen doesn’t always wow me but had the name. I was on the right track. Big name.
I was going to purchase this product but as I looked at the distilleries, I decided to buy something I thought I would really like. I bought a GlenAllachie 10cs, the 12, and the 15 and have them while watching your videos. I also tried blending them. I found that I liked equal parts of all three. So in answer to your question, how about a blending type presentation?
I like the blind pours, definitely don't think it should be front and center for the channel. I love the "Mr Rogers Story Time" lol, but mixing things up could be fun.
Daniel - I liked the new format, but not all the time Maybe blind taste a couple of things each month. Whoever is choosing them should be able to find some whiskies that are interesting and widely available. Love Drinks by the Dram (I get their Advent Calendar every year), but try the one from Boutique-y Whisky Company - usually interesting stuff in there, MOM has those as well. Cheers & Enjoy!
How about listing 10 whiskey for the next month… people could buy some of them, sample them, make their notes, and then you blind them during the month. Then people can watch you and try to figure out what whiskey is from your videos and then sample theirs again and learn to develop their senses.
I’m watching this a few hours after my mother in law bought me a bottle of (drum roll)… Johnnie Walker Blue for Christmas. My neighbour who thinks Crown Royal is incredible because it comes in a velvet bag, will shovel my driveway all winter for a few pours of this. Yes I’ve tried to educate him on whiskey but that purple bag gets him every time. Damn you marketing…..
JW Blue is overrated and overpriced. Meh is appropriate. The current format is awesome. You sharing knowledge and stories while discussing them in conjunction with a whisky is interesting and informative.
That was insane. Crazy idea, put your own whiskey calendar together that we can buy. One that only reveals what the whiskey is by watching the videos
Love this format. I started watching regularly again for the first time since the divorce.
Merry Christmas! I didn't have the calendar to drink along with, but I still enjoyed this series. It was a fun way to learn more about understanding a whiskey and it was cool to see what kind of quality the calendar had to offer.

Day 25, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, Whiskey Vaulters.
Thank you, Daniel for doing this for us!
Just getting off work today. Looking forward to watching this later tonight after things quite down a bit at home.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for doing the advent calendar.

Really enjoyed this format, especially finding something to compare it to.

Feliz Navidad! Merry Christmas! Frohe Weihnachten! Perfect timing taking a break in the most festive days of the year! Peace to all!!

I liked these 25 videos, but I really loved it when you looked and found a comparison

Diaegio. 40%. Nuff said!
We dint get what we wanted for Christmas, D. Bummer.
can you review new riff single malt>?
It always seemed to me that the vault was a hub for whiskey on youtube... so why not do more collaborative work?
kinda sad it wasn't a malted rye, but I hope you all enjoyed my birthday today.
Daniel - I liked the new format, but not all the time Maybe blind taste a couple of things each month. …perhaps you could do it as a duo (with someone you like and trust)…
288👍

You didn’t even check?
Advent calendar sponsored by “Johnny Walker” 😅….😢
I’m watching this a few hours after my mother in law bought me a bottle of (drum roll)… Johnnie Walker Blue for Christmas. My neighbour who thinks Crown Royal is incredible because it comes in a velvet bag, will shovel my driveway all winter for a few pours of this. Yes I’ve tried to educate him on whiskey but that purple bag gets him every time. Damn you marketing…..
Nope you are the last thing on my list. Cheers.
I’m so tired of mass marketing….It’s ruining quality…
Let me guess... Johnny Walker Blue
NAILED IT!
I didn't care for it when I did get to try it. Of all the JWs, the basic Black is the best option for taste.
JW Blue is overrated and overpriced. Meh is appropriate. The current format is awesome. You sharing knowledge and stories while discussing them in conjunction with a whisky is interesting and informative.
Merry Christmas 🎉
