Yes, it would be nice if you had a written pattern cause I can't see what you're doing.I'm a visual person. If I had the pattern and saw what you were doing, it might help

use a smaller hook or 1/2 the size of the yarn she uses and a size smaller hook till you have the right size I used a 2 wt yarn and a F hook for appliques on my mittens turned out awesome!

Just made this but not sure what you mean bu pinning and blocking pieces. Do you have a video for this or can you explain it to me please x
If you skip to 8:18 of this video th-cam.com/video/MzRad3fFBIs/w-d-xo.html I explain it then! All it is, is pinning the pieces and gluing the back to help stiffen them up and stop them curling! It helps them hold their shape! Hope that helps!

What does pin and block mean?
wash it and roll it in a towel to press out excess moister and lay it out flat on something like a section of cardboard shape it how you want it to dry an use sewing pins to pin it down in that position thats blocking
