I have an old translation of Georges Ifrah's wonderful, _A Universal History of Numbers_ and I have to say that it is utterly superb. It still gives me chills looking at the acquisition of numeracy and all kinds of fun counting systems from all over the prehistoric world. Most histories are strongly biased to development of numbers in Western society. Monsieur Ifrah corrects that rather unfortunate academic bias with aplomb.
