You could do a reaction video of a compilation of the best scenes in the series(one block, SUGAAA, final point vs seijoh, final point vs date tech, tons of shiratorizawa scenes, tons of inarizaki scenes, and the tsukki convo with bokuto about why play volleyball, etc, etc, etc), haikyuu have tons of memorable scenes and if u compile all together could easily be a 30-40min video, and would be fun. Maybe u dont want to see it to save it for the reaction rewatch, but its a good video idea =]

Coach, the little girl you couldn't remember was Akane Yamamoto, Taketora's (Tanaka's "twin" on Nekoma) little sister. She, along with Lev's sister, the real tall girl she was talking to, are Nekoma's main cheer squad, so there's a slight rivalry between them and Tanaka's sister as a battle of the cheer squads.

Tsukki saying "today, I'm pretty sure I witnessed someone having that moment..."
The "that moment" he's referring to is the moment when he was able to block Ushiwaka which made him hooked on volleyball. That's why he subsequently said that Hinata has sunked one level deeper in being hooked on volleyball.

What a journey it has been Coach, 85 episodes (86 if you count the S4 E8 Accident during S1) and a few OVAs, always great information and perspective from you Coach! Also, next time on Haikyuu, we get to see Nekoma vs Karasuno in an official match for the first time!
What Kenma said about "do you think we could've beaten Ushiwaka or the Miya Twins" is always so interesting to me. People forget that Inarizaki was the SECOND BEST high school team in all of Japan coming into the Spring Nationals. However, Nekoma has shown to be effective against Karasuno, like when Coach Ukai said back in S2 "Teams that are more structured and react to what we do without getting fazed are tough for us" and that is exactly what Nekoma is. A team that scans you with their cat-eyes for an opening.
By the way, that little girl was Taketora's little sis, (Taketora is Nekoma's Tanaka with the mowhawk). Can't wait to see what other content you've got lined up for us Coach!

Yeah and Coach Ukai even said that Seijoh (Oikawa/kpop team) was a team like Nekoma, a bad match for Karasuno. Seijoh folded Karasuno in Season 1 and still managed to get folded by Shiratorizawa after that so team match-ups are very important things to consider.

35:50 Grandpa Ukai's referring to how the Battle of the Garbage Dump might have been his personal goal only, and realized that his players may have not felt the same rivalry he feels towards Nekoma and the coach, Nekomata. That's why Coach Ukai responds that at least in this current gen, the players of Karasuno and Nekoma have actually built friendship and rivalry among themselves and they are not putting up a facade just to satisfy Grandpa Ukai, but rather, want the Battle of the Garbage Dump more than anyone else. Next season is going to be a ride!!

Absolutely love how they repeated the final point scene with a different, more somber soundtrack. Interestingly enough, that track, "Haven't Reached the Starting Line", played when Hinata was having some tough time at the training camp in the beginning of the season.
"Somehow accurately communicating the human experience through a volleyball game" - such a good way to describe Haikyuu. Another one I recall is "haikyuu is life in a volleyball package".
Loved the comparison you made between Kita and Ushijima, and now I want to see those two interact more x) Kita's leadership appreciation is also very well-placed.
Tsukki witnessing Hinata "having that moment" is a reference to something Bokuto told Tsukki in S2 - "if you have this moment, you'll be hooked on volleyball". Obviously Hinata was already hooked before, but, much like Tsukki said, that receive had a great impact on him and he did sink deeper into volleyball.
The girl you forgot is Akane, Yamamoto Taketora's sister :D She appeared in the OVA!
Inari is a fox, and snakes are Nohebi! The guy walking from the venue with his girlfriend, Daisho, is from Nohebi (they lost to Nekoma in the prelims shown in the OVA as well).
I feel like you've gotten the final scene pretty well in the end - Ukai senior was a bit worried that the whole "battle of the garbage dump" thing ended up forced on the current generation because of his own past rivalries, but these current players, after having played each other so many times at training camps, already developed their own rivalries and now really want to play each other officially. I like his considerations though, it's a nice touch.
Thank you so much for these reactions, they've been such a source of joy for the last 2 years, especially when we're not getting any official Haikyuu content. Excited for whatever comes next!

I know it's super late, but the way I interpret Tsukki's comment is that obviously, it's the moment Hinata got hooked on volleyball. If you look at Suga's flashback when Hinata does that super high pass to slow the game down, at the beginning of the series, Hinata was hooked on SPIKING. He was always saying how it was the coolest, and it's all he wanted to do. But, we know volleyball is much more than just spiking, it's blocking, passing, setting, etc. and that "super receive", as Nishinoya would put it, is what got Hinata truly hooked on VOLLEYBALL as a whole, every facet of it, not just spiking, that's him being hooked one level deeper.

I’ve watched all the episodes so far and read the manga all the way through and I love so much about it, but one thing that I feel like no one ever talks about is Takeda-Sensei. Without him, none of this would have ever happened. He refused to give up on the team even when they didn’t believe in themselves, when no one believed in them. He did everything he could so they could shine. He went to everyone “look at these kids! They deserve a chance too!”. He’s the one that brought in a new coach. He’s the one that begged and bothered other coaches for practice matches and training camps. He’s the one that never let his team give up on themselves, and pushed them to be better and better. This is the type of teacher kids need in their lives. He’s amazing.

Kita really hits us in the feels this episode. He's easily my favorite captain, and combines some of the best traits of many good captains & vice captains in Haikyuu! He's straightforward and speaks truth (Ushijima), serious and commands respect (Daichi), analyzes the game clearly and provides good instruction (Suga), and he seems to know his teammates better than they know themselves, like Oikawa. Add to that his wisdom beyond his years, what a fantastic character.

I love that they bring back the first opening song for the Hinata-Kenma montage at the end of the episode, it’s a great throwback!
Also a heads up on the dub: it definitely has a more comedic atmosphere around it than the sub! This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I still like the dub (admittedly not as much as the sub), but it’s a different experience than the sub. Personally I’d prefer the rewatch to remain in sub.

I'd like to leave a couple of suggestions of possible new content that I (and maybe some other fans?) would like to see:
    1. Haikyuu documentary reaction - it's spoiler-free [for you], and there's some further insight into how Haikyuu influenced volleyball in Japan: from kids, coaches and national team players. I feel like it'd be interesting to hear your insight alongside theirs. There's also some extra explanations on certain techniques the author used when portraying volleyball (albeit in the manga). All in all, a fairly interesting documentary.
    2. The original source, aka the manga - I'm probably not the first one to say it, but :"D Can't help at least suggesting it here. There's certain things that didn't make it in the anime, especially in the latest season. Certain things that have a different impact due to the differences in mediums. On top of that, the author is Really good at paneling and composition, and they've made some tremendous progress with anatomy, perspective and dynamics over the course of the series, and after your commentary on the animation, I'd love to hear your thought on that as well.
Still, as a final note: these are merely suggestions, and if it's not your cup of tea or is too troublesome to organize for whatever reason, that is totally fine - but I still hope you can check those out even if just on your own at some point :) You likely won't be disappointed!
PS: and if you want to think even deeper about this particular game, definitely recommend checking out the video called "How Karasuno vs. Inarizaki changes everything about Haikyuu"; might help you process it even better!

Just fyi coach, Nekoma watching the karasuno's match means Nekoma is waiting for their next opponent; the winner of the match between Karasuno and Inarizaki. So when Kuroo said "that's our cue", it refers to them knowing who they will be up against, which is Karasuno.

Coach, it's not that Nekoma wants to beat Karasuno so badly. It's that they've beaten Karasuno *every single time they've played* even in practice matches, going all the way back to 'Old' Coach Ukai. That's why Young Coach Ukai wants to show his gramps the Battle of the Garbage Dump, and more importantly, to win it.

What Tsukki was talking about with Hinata goes back to when Bokuto told him that when he will have that breakout moment on the court he'll be hooked on Volleyball. For Tsukki it was the block against Shiratorizawa. Now he notices that Hinata had that breakout moment. Hinata used to like volleyball because he wanted to hit. After the ball boy camp he started appreciate digging but it wasn't until he dug Aran's spike that he truly felt how exilarating digging a perfect ball could feel and now Tsukki says that he's one level deeper into volley

Coach Ukais' convo at the end meant that, at first Older Coach Ukai began being a volleyball coach simply because he wanted to beat the other school. They probably had their own encounters during their school days. However, as times go by, he realized that the people he's coaching aren't just his puppets to use for his grudge against Nekoma. And that he was no longer a coach simply to create a team that will beat Nekoma, but a true volleyball coach that will nurture his own players without any agenda.
Then the Younger coach Ukai said that he isn't showing Older Ukai the Battle of the Garbage Dump for his sake and his past grudge on Nekoma, but rather its Karasuno's VB team's own will to fight against them.

Even though Karasuno and Nekoma have been training together for many years and having practice matches, they never played against each other in an official match on a tournament. That’s because they are in a different prefecture, and can meet only on a nationals. That’s why it’s a special moment, they finally get to fight each other on tournament. And this special moment is a Battle of the Garbage Dump we have been waiting for so long.

It's interesting you talk about Kita 'guiding' Inarizaki through their loss, on finding the value in it whilst acknowledging and accepting the frustration.
A lot of fans see Kita as an Author Substitute character, as more than any other he really just embodies the wisdom espoused by the later arcs of Haikyuu and the manga's overall themes on the value of sports.
So, in his own way, Furidate is guiding us all in how we approach the challenges in our life. I've always found Haikyuu incredibly insightful and inspirational and constantly find ways to apply its messages both in competitive fields and my general life: I think your analysis of Kida is a really cool way of describing that effect :)

I love how in the Shiratorizawa match, the MVP was clearly Tsukki and here, the MVP, or I guess MVPs are the first year trio: Kageyama Tobio, Tsukishima Kei and Hinata Shoyo. I love how they play the first opening of the anime at the end there. It's my favorite opening too. And these are manga spoilers so yeah. I love how Atsumu DOES set to Hinata eventually AND before that, the Miya twins DO beat Karasuno. Not at the interhigh since Date Tech beat Karasuno in the finals for the prefecture prelims, but the twins beat them on the 2nd day of Spring High.

Tsukki saying "today, I'm pretty sure I witnessed someone having that moment..."
Back in Season 2 Tsukki Asks Bokuto + the other school leaders why they love basketball so much. Bokuto states it's because maybe he's not good enough, but once he gets better and has a bad ass moment, he will then be hooked + fall in love with the game.
This happens when Tsukki blocks Ushiwaka, this is the first time we see him express himself emotionally, from this point on Tsukki is not just practiving, but trying to keep up with his teamates. (Learning new moves and using his full max jump)
The point is that Hinita from Season 1 to now only cared about spiking the ball. You ask, can he get even more hooked? Well look at him now, he just had that bad ass moment, and now ENJOYS being in the back row.

Coach, I'm SO excited for the day that you, as a coach, to get to react to Karasuno vs Nekoma. The entire match is a back and forth competition between the two teams of adapting and countering new strategies. You always say that the team that makes the last adjustment is the team that will come out on top, and Karasuno vs Nekoma is the perfect embodiment of that phrase throughout the entirety of the game. Plus, their match is a culmination of ALL of the growth of character and technique that has been cultivating since the very first season, when Karasuno plays vs nekoma for the very first time. Season 5 can't come any sooner!!

  • @shadowstorm9363

the ending song this episode felt so nostalgic
and yes karasuno's next opponent is nekoma
also clarification, its not that nekoma wants to beat karasuno badly or vice versa, they are just good old rivals, grandpa ukai and nekoma's coach are friends and rivals and their respective teams also became good rivals, so u see nekoma team members (and nekoma's coach) helping karasuno many times (in earlier seasons) even calling them on the training camp because they would like karasuno to get powerful too so they can have more fun in rival matches. And sarcastically and lovingly, anytime they get to play against each other in an official setting, they call it battle of the garbage dumps lol

Something to take note of, Karasuno and Fukurodani(Bokuto’s team) are on opposite sides of the bracket, so a potential matchup between them would only happen if they faced each other in the finals of the tournament. You’ll just have to wait and see if that actually ends up happening haha

Karasuno is set to play Nekoma in the Top 16 of nationals. Nekoma and Karasuno have never had an official sanctioned match in all their years as rivals/practice partners. It just never lined up for them since they’re from different prefectures which means they can only meet in national level events for official matches.

  • @LatebutLearning

The after credit Ukai scene is probably my favourite one. Really drives home the old "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach" saying. Never understood that saying until I was older. It just means if you are 'naturally' good at something, odds are you wont make a good teacher. You're starting point was above others and your advice might be too advanced for your players. A good teacher is someone who has had to go through all the basics starting from zero. Made themselves a good player through nothing but hard work and determination.
No matter how you say it, people are going to think of it as an insult though. In reality, the intention is that all of their work matters because you can help mold the future generation for the sport you love. Love your work, excited for any updated tutorial videos because I've basically memorized the previous ones. lol

I think what i find special in this Anime is that you really get a feel of how Karasuno won or lost. At the end of the day, yeah they won cause the author wanted them to win but he told a story of how trying new things in the middle of a match can bite you back. Like i would assume that if they were going against shiratorizawa they would have played more in system but as coach Ukai said, "speed is a curse." Another thing that Inarizaki didnt account for was Hinata actually being good at digging balls. "we weren't aggressive enough" was what the Inarizaki coach said and i assume they had watched Karasuno's match vs Shiratorizawa and noticed that Hinata was an open field and only got lucky at digging so all Rintaro had to do was hit towards him.

Personally, I love how Hinata evolved from that young boy wanting to be a Wing Spiker because all he wanted was to spike. Passing? Not interested. Blocking? Not interested. Digging balls and receiving? Not interested.
But it was slowly, through his experience with Karasuno, with other players from other schools that he started to learn the bliss behind a perfect block, the perfect dig and the perfect pass.
Now, he no longer just wants to spike. He wants to remain on the field, learn and put to practice what he has picked up on the way.

Damn those Sakuraco products sure do look nice lol. I work at a little store that sells Wagashi (Japanese sweets) here in the US, it's always a treat (puns) to see Japanese creativity in snacks. The Tangerine (Mikan) Jelly you ate probably should be refrigerated for 30ish minutes prior to eating just in case, sometimes the jellies become liquid if it's too hot. Chilling the gels for a little while gives them a nice texture and lets you plate them easily (although there's nothing stopping you from just drinking them, they taste excellent all the same). Those pringles are Cream Stew flavored, which sounds awesome.

2020 was a year were i was finally starting to come out of the darkest period in my life. Finding Haikyuu at the beggining of that year was fun, motivational and impactful. It made me want to start practicing volleyball but, because 2020, all i was able to do was get a volleyball go to an open space surrounded with four walls i have near my house and train serving and passing all by my self. It was one of the best decisions i could have made that year. It help me to be in shape, both physically and mentaly, and it was a wonderful satisfying experience all the new "skills" i learned like jump serving and how to pass properly. But that last part would have been impossible was it not for the wonderful coach i found on youtube 😁. Coach Donny, you can't imagine my suprise one you started your haikyuu reactions. To see and follow the journey of the guy who taught me all i knew about volleyball from a technical standpoint, reacting to the reason i fell in love with the sport in the first place was truly great. Can't believe almost 2 years have gone by, and i'm privileged to say i was there from ep 1. Hey Coach! I just wanted to say a big thanks to you for getting on this journey with us. I have been following your reactions since the very first espisode and it has truly been an amazing experience rewatching one of my favourite animes with you. The unique perspective you provide as a volleyball coach with in depth animation knowledge really brings the experience to a whole new level. I really appreciate your great work and look forward to your rewatch reactions.
Also, it is amazing to see how excited coach got in the begining of this episode when reacting (again) to the twins quick (even twice in a roll lol) considering coach's reaction is usually more subtle lol. But I believe thats some genuine enthusiasm I saw there in the face which I am glad to see because it probably means that coach is enjoying the show from the bottom of his heart. Welcome to the club Coach!
    P. S. I personally prefer the original Japanese version over the English dubbed one. As you rightly pointed out, I think the Japanese voice actors did such a great job in conveying the personality of the characters as well as their feelings. And many of the scenes in Haikyuu carry a unique sense of Japanese culture so I think it would be unlikely for foreign voice actors to be able to convey the intended message/feelings as the Japanese voice actors do. But of cos it doesnt hurt to have a try and see how it feels.

24:24 never noticed this when I was watching Haikyuu the first time around, but the thing the news reporters were talking about was 'a snake being jealous of a cat', which is extremely reflective of the prior scene in which the guy with the small eyes and green-ish hair, captain of the Nohebi team (that lost against Nekoma, not sure if I spelled Nohebi right or if he is actually the captain of that team), showed a bit of jealousy towards the teams playing in the tournament, maybe a little more towards Nekoma. The parallel in this exists in that the representative animals for 'Nohebi' and 'Nekoma' are a snake and a cat, respectively, because of how their schools' names are similar to the animals' names in Japanese, and thus is 'the snake being jealous of the cat', or the Nohebi player being jealous of Nekoma.

That moment with the last Twins quick I loved how the showed the team's slogan. As the twins gave ther best and risking all in move they have done barely a couple of timea. That's real guts.

Otsumu's "I'm gonna set you one day" is my favorite scene from the episode. At the start of season, he is told "I don't see any value in you without kageyama" and at the end of the season, one of the best setters recongises him as if it is a matter of fact. Love to see it.

The final credits of the seasons showed highlights of nekoma and karasuno from season 1 until now to build up anticipation for the next match/season: Karasuno vs Nekoma. The first few seasons of Haikyuu were animated in a different art style and they just reused those animations rather than re-animating those scenes in the new style.

Haikyuu is one of my favorite animes because there is never a real villain like most animes..sure you have players like Oikawa, "Ushiwaka", and Aone whom are meant to be portrayed as villains but they really aren't, they're just players who are confident in their respective abilities and tell it like it is no matter what and how it affects others..

    Been here since episode one!
Great series, great channel, great guy.
Haikyuu is what got me into volleyball and now volleyball is what keeps me going.
I owe a lot to this series, it taught me a lot of things, a lot of which I've been trying to apply to the rest of my life.
I think the biggest lesson I've learned from Haikyuu is how to motivate myself and what it means to truly love something.
Haikyuu is so inspirational making people watch it is my team's nº1 recruitment strategy.
