    Thanks for all your great videos, I was able to clean my FNS Plus filter myself because of you! I cleaned the grids without taking them out as suggested by you for a novice, definitely much easier and less of a headache. Thanks again for making great videos with detailed information and advice.

    I've found your videos extremely helpful since my pool guy retired this summer and I took over all the simple to intermediate difficulty maintenance tasks. My filter is a Pentair Nautilus FNS, which is very similar to the FNS Plus. The only differences I noticed were the air release and pressure gauge are different, and the top manifold is black and has some sort of small trap basket attached on top. I used your technique of cleaning the filter grids while they were in place within the tank, and it worked very well. My snags came when I tried to put the O ring back on, and it seemed stretched and "floppy". A quick trip to the pool store for a new O ring solved the problem. Also, after I rebuilt the filter and did a quick backwash, I turned my multi port valve to "filter" and some cloudy, dirty-appearing water came out from the returns. I hadn't added DE yet, so I'm guessing it was residual dirty DE in the tank. Maybe next time I should set to "rinse" for a bit to get rid of residual contents in the tank?
    Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make these instructional videos. They've made me enjoy even more taking care of my pool myself!

      +Thomas Turner MD Yes, if you have a multi-port valve rinse mode is a good idea to eliminate DE blow back. Glad you were able to do it yourself.

    I just want to thank you David for your wonderful videos and this is specific also to the FNS DE Filter. I finally went from Hayward Cartridge after 15 years to D.E. So I am excited with this multiport valve and the Backwash feature. So As the manual says after the rise to 8-10 psi, we should backwash our filter. My confusion is, our pool guy only recommends backwash as an emergency but it sounded that I have to clean the DE filter inside like you show in some of your videos. The good news is that I might not need clean it as often as Cartridge type filters. He said around 6 months time. Just want to see your opinion. Thanks

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, every 6 months for a full cleaning is pretty typical. I usually only backwash when the pressure gauge gets to 30 PSI - usually the starting PSI is around 20. Typically only have to backwash a handful off filters on my pool route before the 6 month cleaning. You may not need to backwash very often, maybe one time in between cleanings. Unless you live in a very dusty region like Arizona or the Ca. high desert.

    Try building it upside down. I have done this a few times when I couldn't get the bottom on right. Put the top mainfold on the ground and stick the grids in it. Then slide the bottom in place. You can also get someone to help you and tilting it while you try and align it. Great engineering ;)

    Great job on all the videos, very nice and extremely detailed. Just what folks need to DIY. Thanks so much. I am not so much a novice on this stuff but I have had issue with the HIGH FLOW MANUAL AIR RELIEF on top of fns 60 d.e. filter it cracked right at the top of the threads and sprayed everything with in a 20 foot area,lol. but not so funny since its happened twice this season. I am sorta puzzled as to why this keeps happening, any comments or advice would be appreciated. I do have a great way to extract the broken threads, i used the pry end of a tire iron like a big screw driver and heated the tip with a torch and stuck it the thread for a sec and pulled it out let it cool then re inserted in the hole and just screwed it right out.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Dandy Deman Maybe try adding some teflon tape and threading it in so it is tight but not overly tight. I've noticed if you thread them in too much now they tend to form a hairline crack - which leads to leaking or cracking. Good job on removing the broken threads -Macgyver ;).

    First, I would like to thank you for all of your videos and replies. They have helped me many times. I went from a guy that was nervous to work on the equipment to a confident guy that answers neighbors questions about maintenance and troubleshooting.
    Can you tell me if I should try something more than what I am currently doing on my current situation? I have the Pentair FNS Plus 48 system. With the crazy rains down here in TX, the otherwise excellent drainage pipes that I have around the pool could not handle all of the rain that we received last weekend. So the excess water/debris/mud went into the pool. I have been running the Polaris all day to get the debris/mud from the bottom of pool. I have emptied it out after every cycle (1.5 hrs) then go through another cycle. I have cleaned the filters every time that filter tank pressure doubles from its normal pressure. I believe that I did this about 6 times yesterday. I charged the pool with DE the first 4 times but not the last 2. The pressure still doubled since there is still so much gunk in the pool. The pool is still a nasty brown color.
    Should I try something in addition to what I have been doing? Would it be ok to just backwash instead of hosing down the filter grids? FYI, I went ahead and ordered some new filter grids since I noticed that some of the grids have broken plastic (not the cloth material) in certain spots. I don't know if I want to use them on this ugly water.

      yetijoeyetijoe I think in your case you will need to invest in a portable pump like the one I show in this video. For about $200.00. You will need some regular pool vacuum hoses and a pool vacuum - hopefully you have those or can borrow one from a neighbor. The Hayward one is $157.00 on amazon and there is a generic one for $134.00. I think your filter just can't handle the load and you will ruin your new grids in the process.

Last night i cleaned my filters, i didn't see any cracks or holes upon inspection of the grids. after they were cleaned and i put the de into the skimmer, i noticed that the de was returning back into my pool. Quick question. I noticed after i cleaned the filters that there was a lot of air in the system. it took me about 10 minutes of messing with valves to re-prime. Is it recommended that i close all valves off that are the feed from the pool so air doesnt enter the lines? thx! great video!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +D Pennington Sometimes that will happen. The best solution is a check valve in front of the pool pump to prevent the water from draining back into the pool when you clean the filter. You can try closing the valves also if you are able to. Basically the air is pushing all the water out of the suction pipe when you open the filter.

    Hi watching your video very cool the filter that you're cleaning now this is what I have and the bottom dropped out it has threads and it has bores completely all over the place the repeat just completely popped out on the bottom and poured water all over the place. Now it's smooth that snapped off cleanly I don't know how to get it out without damaging the outside for which is smooth and the inside I bought an APS phone number for you to take it out because I met myself the whole shelter and have to buy a whole new filter with chicken on it for of course this is what I have any suggestions the bottom just popped out and spewed water all over the place. I'm afraid to try to get under there and unscrew because it's so it's snapped off like it's very smooth it's completely flush with what's the inside and the outside and I don't want to get under there and start breaking the boars that's holding the threads what's the o-ring any suggestions because it's completely flush with the boars? love your videos! I have a question. We had our old stainless steel filter replaced by our home warranty company.. They put in this Pentair FNS Plus 48sq ft filter. The STARTING pressure of the filter was 27 PSI. A Leslie's pool store service guy said that it was way too high, and that something is wrong (BTW, our old SS filter was at about 22 when clean). Our pump is 2hp, and the pool is a 15,000 gal inground with attached spa. It was a salt pool, but the salt element went bad, so I just left it inline and use chlorine now. The heater hasnt been run in years, and isnt working atm. I was wondering if this pressure is a problem, and what the cause might be? Pool store guy thought it might be an oversized pump creating back pressure, or a bad install? I was thinking maybe the old salt element or heater is blocking flow? If you read this far, THANKS!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be the salt cell has excess calcium on it. I would remove it and check it. If it looks okay then it could be a part from the heater came loose and is stuck in your return line - usually at the check valve. My guess is the salt cell is the problem.

    I really appreciate your videos. Thank you so much for doing this.
    I have a question on this video. You say this is a 48sqf model (FNS Plus 48), and you added in 8 scoops of D.E. It looked like you were using a 1lb scoop. The label on my filter that lists all models indicates the FNSP 48 should get 4.8lbs of D.E.
    My understanding is that brand new (or after a full clean out with the filter open), that should be 4.8lbs of D.E., or after a simple backwash it should be 80% of the 4.8lbs which would be adding in 3.84lbs of D.E. Since you had this opened and cleaned the inside, I thought you should have been adding in about five 1lb scoops of D.E. (4.8lbs), but you said to add in 8 scoops. What I'm not understand is why you added in 8 one pound scoops (60% more D.E. than the manual or external label on the filtersays to add).
    Thank You!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The scoop is a 1lbs scoop but when D.E. is dry it is actually 1/2 lb by weight. So 8 full scoops would be 4 lbs. slightly less than the reccomended amount but sufficent. And after backwashing I usually only add 2 lbs. Not as much D.E. comes off as you would think. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the video. Super helpful. I have 36 de filter pentair. I followed your instruction for the filter cleaning. Everything went well. No cracks and screens had no tears or holes. Got everything cleaned and back together. Followed the instructions. After putting in the DE I wanted to see if any spit out of the pumps. Everything was good. The problem was my pump pressure was at 0?? When I turn the pump on i see bubbles come out of the pool. but no pressure. Any ideas?

      Sometimes gauge opening gets de powder in it causing incorrect readings. Try rinsing the opening of the pressure gauge out and even carefully cleaning the opening with a pipe cleaner. If that doesn’t work the gauge probably needs replacing.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My guess is that the filter grids are bad. The fabric wears out over time and if the previous owner didn't clean the filter regularly they will wear even faster. They may look fine but the fabric is probably clogged up and no longer will let the water through when the D.E. even gets slightly dirty. Typically they last five to seven years and if you have had two ripped ones that is a sign of age. When you replace the grids that should solve the problem. Put some silicone on the manifold cracks.

    Hi and Thanks for making this video.
    I have a pentair fns 36plus that was installed in a home I bought and I think it needs an overhaul but the barrel nut that should be hexagonal appears to be round - with no indication of a worn nut that was made round over time. Is this an earlier version of the brass nut I see in the video and how do I undo it - just with heavy duty vice-grips?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the homeowner just used a non-standard nut on the end. I've seen many odd nuts over the years. I would use some Channel Locks and pull it off, then replace it with a factory barrel nut.

    What I usually do with my de filter is when cleaning by removing the lid, I also remove the pump lid so the pump looses prime and even if it turns back on while im removing the clamp, it wont catch prime and cause the explosion, since its full of air. Or just close the main suction valve if the lid is tight to remove.

    thanks for all the vids! I'm still trying to trouble shoot why my fns 36 keeps spitting back DE and some small black particles in the return even after we replaced all the grids. I was told by a friend to check out if it's a breather tube missing or o rings missing or need replacing or cracked manifold. I think I dont see any cracks. also i dont have the butterfly nuts that hold down the whole grid. does that really make a difference?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than likely when the filter is filling up the top manifold and the grids are seperating slightly since the nut that holds them tighly together is missing. It just takes a fractional gap to cause DE to leak back into the pool. It can be very fustrating. Watch this video to see if everything is on correctly and get the nut to tighten everything down. th-cam.com/video/ABh7Gr5OmkQ/w-d-xo.html

    Hello, I have a Pentair Whisperflo 2HP, lately my impeller keeps getting stuck due to debris which results in my circuit breaker popping and then not turning back on until I unclog the impeller and reset the breaker. The basket is free of cracks, the impeller spins/moves fines once I've removed the motor and cleared all debris - often times I can clear by hand or screwdriver. I also have a basket filter in the pool - which helps a little. I think I read somewhere maybe adding some sort of screen to the filter basket would reduce further debris getting to the impeller or is there maybe a basket that allows less debris to flow to the impeller? Or is the impeller simply bad - like I said spins fine when debris is clear? Thank you!

    I also have a fns plus 36 d.e. filter. would "dirty grids" or "lack of maintenance" cause the filter to crack? This unit is over 12 years old, I am the original owner. The hole "crack" is about the size of a ball point pen. Just fyi, I have maintained my pool. The grids were covered with debris when the filter tank was opened and the bottom couple of grids were cracked, but the material had no tears or rips whatsoever. I need to have an answer because my extended home warranty company is claiming that this is the cause of the crack..lack of maintenance and no d.e. present. I have been told by 4 different companies that I had look at this tell me it was due to "normal wear and tear", but I need more proof because I have filed a complaint with the BBB and need to prove that this company is incorrect! Please help!!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terri Esposito Unlikely. The tank is weakened from UV sun exposure since it is made of fiberglass. It can also be a defect in the filter itself that will show itself immediately or at a later time. I have had them crack in the first year on two accounts (covered under the one year warranty). One cracked after 9 years for no reason. It is normal wear and tear. I would call Pentair and have them send you a statement of some kind referencing that tanks crack due to age and wear, or defects. The Warranty Co. are always trying to get out of paying - very, very common. Pentair 1-800-831-7133

      First..thank you for your speedy feedback. I truly appreciate this. And I have already contacted Pentair and they were not willing to go on record with this fact..rather referring me to the owner's manual. .which I do have along with all of my other original paperwork.
      Can I use your comment with my other documentation with my rebuttal on my complaint to the BBB?
      I also just paid out of pocket to replace the filter..even though I wanted to change to a sand filter. .but the Pentair Area Manager only charged me $350.00 for a new d.e. filter..so putting my pool's needs first..I bit the bullet.
      I am a widowed disabled veteran and I feel like they are only trying to take advantage. I have spent the last few weeks fighting with them and now filed a complaint. Thinking of going to the media..but my next letters are going to the ceo's of the corporate offices and see where that takes me.

    Hello, how often should you do this type of clean on a DE filter? And how often should you backwash?
    Is there a time consideration on top of a psi consideration? Like for example, I’m only up 5 psi but it’s been a certain amount of time, do a full clean anyways?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually every 6 months without question - you should tear it down and hose off the grids.

    Hi. I was wanting to see if you could help me out. I purchased a home with a pool. Its a salt water system and the filter is an fns plus 36 sq feet filter with the 5 port valve. I was trying to filter the water since it was real green. Well the d.e. filter is in good condition but when i run it in filter it takes about 15 minutes for the pressure to build up to 30 psi i the filter and the jets stop pushing out water. When i open up the filter its barely dirty with or without the d.e. it builds up pressure and wont filter. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlos Martinez One of the drawbacks with the DE filter is that algea dust really clogs up the grids especially if the grids are older. You say you have a 5-port valve so one thing you can do is add chlorine and an algaecide to kill the algea and then let it settle on the bottom and manually vacuum out to "waste" on the multi-port vavle.. A pool Floc will also aid you as it clumps up the dead algae and helps sink it to the bottom. This video features a Sand Filter but shows you how to vacuum to "waste" -

      Usually it is old grids that get clogged easily or a pool with a lot of organics in it - like after it turned green and you are clearing it up. Algae dust really clogs the girds fast. If the pool is clear then the grids might be old.

I found out that a ss back up ring the goes inside the filter has been popped out ..... ionno what to do I've been fighting with this for a week now :(, any help would be appreciated

    Question, I have the same filter model,but the backwash valve not working, I did a mistake when cleaning the filter, I removed the cap, top part and let water fill it up and it backwash towards the top, and also the dirty water went back to the pool and pool is now dirty with the old DE, Messy and cloudy pool now. What do to?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let the DE drop down to the bottom of the pool and you can simply vacuum it back up into the filter. It may look like a lot but it probably only is a small amount.

    • @ChristianYepez
      @ChristianYepez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Yes it is a little bit, it settles it and now i just vacuumed. Should I clean my filter again because now it has that mess again?? Any tips for my machine with no backwash valve working?? Should I fill it up the tank and backwash tru the top? How to avoid the mess dirty going back to the pool again???

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No need to clean the filter again. Next time you go to clean it try this, remove the lid off of the tank. Then remove the pool pump lid. Water draining back should come out of the open pump instead of going back to the skimmer. Then clean grids and scoop out as much DE as possible from the tank. Put grids back in. Put pump lid back on. eave tank lid off. Turn on the pump. Water will fill up the tank and spill out over the sides. This will get rid of the dirty water left in the tank. Turn off the pump. Put the lid back on the filter.

      I think they did update the part about 5 years ago. The gauge now a face plate that moves so you can set the clean & dirty markers to match the filter PSI. on the old ones it just has a gauge with no markers. www.amazon.com/Relief-Assembly-Pentair-Filters-98209800/dp/B0055ELNSO/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1405390264&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=fns+plus+air+releif

    Last night the filter started to make a very weird sound. It was after midnight but we went to check & it was the filter. It was showing 30 on the gadget. We do not clean our pool, we have a pool company that comes to do it. We turned the power off and the pool man came the next day. I told him that the filter might be dirty but he told me you don't clean this type of filters. Either he doesn't know what he is doing or my Pentair is different. It looks just like the one you just cleaned. He left after cleaning the pool and the gauge is at 30 again. Hate to tell this man what to do but what do I tell him to not hurt his feelings. An elderly lady that hates to hurt people, lol.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Snooypann The only filter type you don't take apart is a sand filter so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. But if it is a DE filter like this one - it should be cleaned or at least backwashed if the filter gauge is at 30 psi. Time to hurt his feelings ;).

      If you are putting the clamp on and the filter were to turn on while you are say 1/2 done, the lid can explode off of there and hit you in the head. Thereby killing you. The explosion from this type of scenario can shoot the top over a house.

    I don’t know about the rest of the world, all I do is lift it out where is says lift and then hose it down, no need to remove thr grids just remove the whole unit, then remove drain cap and bottom and rinse everything out and then put everything together again much easier and less messy. P. S. If you have a drain do backwash before moving top. Takes 30 mins and less mess and frustration.

    One thing they don't mention is that the container is made of some material like fiberglass. Every time I work on it, I have on my arms these tiny spikelike hairs, which are practically invisible. I have a rash on my arms for 2 days afterwards. These things are HORRIBLE. It is practically impossible not to contact the top while putting the clamp back on. That clamp is the WORST design ever. If you are thinking of buying one of these, do yourself a favor and DON'T.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is fiberglass and can wear out in the sun. Those shards are common. One way to remedy this is to wrap plastic wrap around the top. I wear long sleeve shirts when I clean them. But a good point to bring up for sure.

    Why do you bring it up to pressure before removing clamp? This contradicts common sense and safety instructions from Pentair. Typically, one turns pressure release valve to remove pressure before removing clamp.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the filter is off I turn it on so that when I open the air relief valve all the air will be removed from the tank. Typically when the pool turns off gravity will pull a small amount of water out of the filter tank itself and air will be at the top. So before I clean a filter I like to start the pool up and release all of the air. Once you turn the pool off the pressure will drop to zero and you can safely remove the clamp. Having the tank full of water is safer when you go to remove the clamp.
