As a middle aged Brit, I'm genuinely shocked that this list didn't include, or even put first, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.
Arguably the most evil and cruel serial killers we've had here. They're all evil and cruel, but the targeting and attitudes even after being caught and sentenced make them that much worse.
One victim not found and they refused to ever tell authorities any information about where he was buried, refusal to let the family lay him to rest.
Thats the mark of the worst kind of killer in my mind.

My generation grew up with regular reminders, with Brady and Hindley regularly in the news and documentaries. Brady was always playing to the media, claiming that he could help recover more bodies. Then the fuss over Lord Longford trying to get Hindley released on parole, and her affair with a prison officer. It all seemed to go quiet in the MSM after she died in 2002. Very odd.

As others have said, very surprising that the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were not included. All serial killers are evil imo, but Brady and Hindley were a special kind of evil. Anyone who targets children, as this pair did, is just despicable. Worse still is that one victim's body has never been found, and his mother went to her grave without being able to lay her son to rest. They also made a tape of them torturing one of their victims, a little girl, who could be heard begging to be able to go home. The poor mother had to listen to that terrible tape to identify her daughter's voice, and even the hardened police detectives who had to listen to it were very badly affected. Probably the two most hated people in the UK. Just pure evil, both of them.

When the farmer who owned the farm chatted to the police he happened to mention a spade that had randomly turned up on his land about a decade earlier upon finding the tool the farmer began using it- turns out it was the spade used to bury the body and the murderer had left it behind during his hasty departure.

I totally agree, total A$$butts! As you said they killed their kids.
Their biological daughter Heather, "ran away from home" at 16, except she didn't, she was buried in the garden. Even the other kids would joke around saying things like, "If you don't be have, you'll be buried in the garden/patio like Heather!" Not realising how true that was.
Another one of Fred West's victims was a former lodger, she was also found buried, still carrying Fred's 8month old fetus.
And then there was Charmaine, Fred's stepdaughter that was murdered by Rose while Fred was in prison. They proved the date she was killed because of her missing front teeth. Between her skull, and the school photo showing them missing, they could calculate the window that she was killed in, and they could prove it was Rose.
They think that there were possibly even more victims that Fred killed. And he was in a fairly cooperative mood with the police, pointing out where a couple of the bodies were in the field. They think that if there was more bodies, he might have told them, but when he went into court, Rose snubbed him, wouldn't look at him. It was after that that he took his own life.
Unless the bodies are eventually found by accident, and they can prove it was probably Fred, they will never know. But there are still some missing girls from both Scotland and Gloucestershire when Fred lived in both areas, that have never been found.

Hi JT. Rose West didn't commit any murders before she met Fred.
Fred was clearly a psychopath and also had some learning difficulties. Rose is more complex. There's an argument she was a victim herself, at least initially. At the start Fred was very much the one in charge, although perhaps not so much later on.
Rose had a VERY messed up and traumatic childhood. She came from a large and very poor family. Her mother underwent electroshock therapy for depression whilst pregnant with Rose, which some think may have had an effect. Her dad was a paranoid schizophrenic and was prone to extreme violence and sexually abused Rose and her sister. Rose in turn went on to molest her younger brothers, starting when she was 13.
She was only 15 when she met Fred, he was 27. As well as entering into a sexual relationship with her, Fred also pimped her out.
It's likely she initially went along with the murders in an effort to win his approval and perhaps scared of what he might do if he tired of her, though that's speculation and nobody knows for sure as she's never talked about what happened. However she did seem to get into it too.
It seems likely that if she'd had a secure and loving childhood, not been abused and hadn't met Fred, she'd probably have turned out differently. That doesn't excuse her actions, but it makes it easier to understand how she ended up doing such vile and terriblel things.
Like many serial killers it's likely there were a number of other victims as well as the ones they were convicted of.

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Personality disorders such as psychopathy are VERY different to mental disorders like schizophrenia which can cause psychosis and make the suffer hallucinate or suffer from delusions or become paranoid.
Mental health issues are something different again and include stuff like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self harm, suicidal thoughts, etc.
Mental health issues aren't going to make someone a serial killer, although if stressed it might make them more prone to snap, especially if they're abused in some way such as a wife suffering from domestic abuse.
      What's a psychopath?
CAT scans on the brains of psychopaths show little activity in their frontal lobe. That's the part of the brain thought to govern things like empathy and conscience. If you think of empathy as a sixth sense psychopaths lack that sense.
basically a psychopath is the ultimate in selfishness. The only care about themselves . They will do whatever they think they think they can get away with in order to get what they want. They view other people as:
      1) Those useful to them.e.g those with money and power or can help them get what they want. If at any time that person is no longer of use or worse becomes a possible liability/danger to them then they'll discard them.
      2) Those they can use. e.g for money, sex, etc.
      3) Those they can safely ignore.
      4) Those who are a barrier to them getting what they want or a possible threat e.g. the authorities, a rival, relatives, friends, etc of someone they want to exploit, etc.
Are all serial killers psychopaths? Pretty much.
Are all psychopaths serial killers. No. They vast majority aren't. Most serial killers are psychopaths who have undergone some kind of childhood trauma e.g. bereavement, especially a parent/guardian, parents divorcing, abuse whether, physical, emotional or sexual.
Fun fact: It's thought that 1% of the population are psychopaths. They tend to be attracted to positions of power e.g. politicians, senior police, lawyers, media figures and CEOS.
A number of current and recent world leaders show a significant number of psychopathic personality traits. e.g. Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Putin, Kim Jong Un, Bolsonairo of Brazil, Erdogan of Turkey, Modi of India, Orban of Hungary, etc. And a staggering 25 % of CEOs are thought to be psychopaths.
Once you understand that it suddenly makes sense why big corporations and politicians act as they do and the world is so fucked up. Until we starting testing out leaders for serious personality disorders e.g by CAT scan, it will remain so.

The reply was "This is a hospital not a prison if you want fresh air open a window" (you could only open them 4 inches so they couldn't escape)
    When they arrived they had
    No access to a pen
If they wanted to go to the toilet or have a shower it would be with rhe door open and a member of staff watching
No access to shower gel this would be squeezed into your hand by the member of staff watching

It's frightening how there are people in society who do this. Only this year, a woman named Lucy Letby was sentenced to life without parole. She is a serial killer who murdered babies in a maternity unit at the Countess Of Chester hospital. The biggest problem is that such people don't stand out in a crowd, in fact if you met one you'd probably find they were completely mundane and boring. If you want a good read, I suggest The Crimes, Detection And Death Of Jack the Ripper by Martin Fido. He was a criminology lecturer from both London and Harvard and the above book is probably the definitive work on Whitechapel Jack.

If you do try to find more stuff about these people, one of the best presenter/interviewer/author/journalist is Fred Dinenage. You can hear his distinctive voice throughout this episode, as they used many clips from his true crime tv series. You can actually see him at the end, with the glasses on talking to the guy in black about Jack the Ripper.
He retired from presenting the news 2021 at 79, after 58 yrs in the business. But as of this year, he's apparently doing Saturday afternoons on his local BBC Radio station, at 81!
For animal programs I'd go to David Attenborough, for true crim programs, I'd go to Fred Dinenage.
From Wikipedia...Fred Dinenage: Murder Casebook, a crime documentary series on 20th century murders was first broadcast on the Crime & Investigation Network in 2011.[8] He has also narrated Most Evil Killers for Pick since 2017...

Fred and Rose West. He was killing before he met her, then they got together and he convinced her to do it with him. She murdered his step daughter Charmaine, when she was eight. He then murdered Charmaines mother, when she came looking for Charmaine and her daughter with fred, Anne Marie. But he also killed his daughter 16yr old Heather, she was his and Rose's eldest child. Rose had eight children, five of them were Fred's, the rest were her customers. She prostituted herself from their home for years, with Fred's encouragement.. They mentally, physically and sexually abused those kids for years. They would tell them, behave or we'll bury you under the patio, like your sister Heather.
It's an horrific story, but you can't look away, because you can't believe that they buried nine of the twelve people they murdered in their back garden.

As you go back in time detection and apprehension could be, and was, very problematic: what chance the Ripper in today's times, with CCTV cameras abounding, more advanced forensics, etc.? I'm a bit bemused as to how Brady and Hindley were not listed here. Maybe they did not kill that many (still enough, and children), but, I believe, they also audio recorded the screams of (some) victims, which says a lot about them.
