- I could eat greens everyday and here is how.
Enjoy these basic bedrock foundational cooking tips that will help you make delicious, easy, affordable, healthy vegan, plant based meals.
Garlicky Greens, turmerics- black pepper Basmati rice, chick pea parsley-green onion sauce.
Cheap, delicious and healthy.
another recipe from my time spent at Padma Samye Ling when i was cooking for the silent retreat.
This makes 4 meals each under £2.00 ( since i did this in the U.K. I know the cost here). it'd still be super inexpensive where you are.

It truly has
Well said ... I feel similarly 😊
I agree. Im such a better cook. I cook with confidence. And my mortar and pestle has changed everything. Thank you, Derek.
My first time. I’m hooked.
yeah who is this guy lol? an interesting, articulate person speaking and doing interesting things normally. how refreshing and rare
Derek, my son was a professional vegetarian chef in Portland Oregon. He was a veg baby before he was even born and considered all animals to be his brothers and sisters. He had a heart of gold like you. And he found pure joy in creating healthy animal-free meals. Tragically he passed suddenly several years ago on his 34th birthday. I've lost my inspiration for cooking since I lost him. But watching you has re-ignited my creative veg cooking super powers. I've been plant based for 54 years and raised my precious son and daughter that way. Your story about your dear partner who you lost so tragically as well broke my heart... Just know that you are keeping her alive in spirit by continuing to shine your light through your videos and your compassion for all creatures. Please hug wonderful Frankie for me and sending hugs to you too! XX 💔
If you cooked for your son it would heal your heart and bring his spirit close to you, a time you could share together, he in spirit and you while still here on the earth. Bless your heart. Healing from losing a child is something that cant be understood unless youve experience it.
What a sad story. I send and wish you love ❤
❤
Thank you for sharing ❤
I pickle the kale stems - super easy. Just stuff them into a big jar, pour your favorite flavor of vinegar over, add any extra spices you might like; garlic, colored peppers, tomatoes, etc. Screw on a lid and put in the refrigerator. They will last for more than a year. Eat them as a side taste treat with just about anything except a sweet! I also freeze big leaves of kale. It will crumble in the big jumbo bag. Roll up tight, freeze and sprinkle into whatever savory dish you might be making including a smoothie. Big time saver.
Wow i will try this!
I should have also said that you can stuff kale leaves in the jar also. Another way to fix peppers is not throw out jars of peperoncini pepper juice but use the juice to pickle all kinds of fresh peppers! Just slice, chop or leave whole or whatever size you'd like and stuff in the jar, refrigerate and then wait a few days. Good on just about anything except ice cream! I also "pickle" commercially canned fire roasted tomatoes. Add garlic, vinegar, spices, herbs and again wait a few days and viola' you have a great taste treat.....enjoy.
this an awesome idea
😮 I like the stems as is, but I love these ideas! Thank you!
I’d never thought about pickling veggie stems before! What a great use for them
Praises for basic - absolutely here for this!!
Came to see what he was making.
Got stuck because of the Labrador.
Became curious about his kitchen layout.
Found out he got gifted a pan!
Why has no one ever gifted me a pan in my life? Beautiful Pan...
That food combo is simple & delicious. Has tons of garlic in it!
Will make it !
Thank You for such a lovely treat on cooking !
If you dare leave your address you might get a pan.
That was one of the most fascinating things for me when I quit eating animals, there’s an entire world of veggies, ferments, fruits, legumes, different in every country. What a joy cooking is now. Give Frankie a snuggle from Georgie and the piggies. Me n kale not so much but I grow tons of it for the Guinea pig rescue, they like it. There’s a farm just down from mine, he grows the most incredible collards I’ve ever seen. Here in Georgia it’s so hot I never see him outside to ask how he does it. Great video, 🙏
that's sweet of you to help the guinea pigs. they need that vitamin c.. i wish i could get collards.. saw them on sesame st... i love silverbeet/ chard.. it's what i imagine them to be akin to,,
I don't comment on videos very often, but you have made such a difference in my cooking life. I have been watching you from when you were in your pre pandemic kitchen with your brother! Everything that you make is inspiring, and when you made your most recent video about your month in the monastery, my heart was so touched and it made me cry. It was so beautiful. I love how you have Frankie, Miss America in your life. I just wanted to tell you how much of a difference you have made in my life and how I cook. I went vegan seven years ago, and you really taught me A LOT about how to cook vegan...and you still are teaching me. BTW, the food in this video especially the greens spoke to my Italian heart. Thank you for making these videos.
Thank you for watching and saying.
Everybody else DOES love that beautiful dog! This recipe is right up my alley: Love greens, LOVE them, a simple starch, and a simple bean. Delish! And instructions anyone can follow; appreciate the personal perspective toward the end. Thanks for posting 🙂
These are the absolute most ideal recipes for me - "basic," sure, but well seasoned, nutritious, and delicious. Have I made greens, beans, and rice before? Sure! But your tips on technique, prep methods, and flavor combining is so incredibly valuable. Can't wait for the next one.
I really love the fact that your videos move along quickly and the food looks delicious..But, what I most enjoy is that the music is not too loud, or in the way, and that you are not trying to be a comedian with all kinds of corny special effects and gimmicks. I am trying to really grasp the processes of how you build complex flavors. Your sense of humor is there, but I’m here for the food! And of course I am a firm believer in dog love! Thank you.
It’s amazing how much a fur baby helps bring joy to our lives. ❤
Brother…new to the channel…and I’ve gotta say, (from a die hard carnivore) your greens / chick pea video and lions main mushroom “steak” video really intrigued me. God knows we can all use a break from the animal food once in awhile…so I’m stoked to follow your channel and try out a few of these dishes on the Family. As a 50 year old meat eater…I’m starting to become open to alternative cooking ideas and techniques. Not gonna lie, Iv’e always been a bit skeptical of an “all plant diet conversion”, but your videos…definitely strike a creative chord…so Thank You. Cheers from the Inland Northwest!
Die hard carnivore 😂
@@Dikkekoenijntje you're literally discouraging him from eating more plant based lol
As a plant eater for a decade this was really lovely to read. I always have gotten so much backlash but plant based cuisine can be so inventive and interesting snd fun! Im glad you are finding it interesting
Same here @kevinrussell5910 . Now I'm thinking about doing Tuesdays and Thursdays plant-based even though I'm in the middle of a bulk
@@donttalktomebye I had tofu pad-thai in front of a friend's brother-in-law and he just would NOT stop going on about it. Even hours later, dude was like "yo, careful! Jesse might go into tofu rage!" After that one small experience, I can't imagine how much annoying shit vegetarians and vegans have to put up with daily lol
Frankie is a gem❤❤❤❤❤
This channel is a bright spot in a sea of subpar content. Keep doing your thing.
You are a good hearted human being who this world needs more of, and a great cook.
I LOVE this educational type of video! I'm single, live alone and am very cheap, but I also love to eat so I have to cook for myself. But even after all these years, my cooking hasn't gotten any better. Thanks for holding class.
What about now?
As a caregiver for an obese 85-year-old put her on Whole Foods plant-based sometimes I’m just like trying to cut all these corners and then I watch you and I realize that I could also be doing arch and deliciousness. Thank you for the inspiration.
Cookbooks can never replace human communication. I rejoice that you give this old and disabled woman the impetus to cook. Thank you ❤️ 🙏❤️
Show the world your grandmotherly flavors!!!
❤❤❤
Cooking like this really helps support people transitioning to Vegan/Vegetarian/Plant-based. Simple ingredients, easy and quick to cook, and no high priced over-processed rubbish. Thanks Derek.
We are minimalist plant based eaters, and this is perfect! Sometimes we literally eat black beans, farro, salsa and guacamole tacos for dinner. Or sweet potatoes with sautéed veggies, beans, kraut, and hot sauce. It’s nutritious, and filling so who cares. ❤️
I’m so envious of Derek’s cutting skills.
Dude! Dig the bandana-wrapped pots! I'm using that. And I'm with you, that taking away animal products, opens up the whole world of food to explore. I really appreciate what you do.
I love how Frankie knows not to overwork herself. She’s such a good example.
Im truly grateful for your time and energy in making these videos.
Thank you Derek ❤
Thank you for watching
Thank you so very much for showing us ways to eat while leaving the animals alone. Love your channel from Virginia 🇺🇸
I've been vegan/plant based for almost 9yrs now. I love it! I was never a big meat eater anyway, so wasn't hard for me. I buy meat but it's for my animals(dogs/cats) because their diet is mostly meat, and that's what they get. I make their food also(minimal cooking) i get air dried also(till i buy a airdryer). So I know what they're eating. I love your recipes, ive made many of them and just fablous! You & Frankie are just awesome. Cant wait for what else you've got cooking. Be safe,be well and stay blessed..💚 BLESS🙏🌻
You're a really cool human, Derek Sarno. ❤
Bless you for living in England, in the summer, in the cold, wet, and rain. Your cooking is an inspiration to me after being vegan for 18 months. It seems like vegan recipes are either overly complex and labor intensive, or too simple without enough flavor. Your channel hits the sweet spot, thank you Derek.
Derek - just discovered your channel and I'm loving it! Refreshing to see your down to earth approach and commentary. Frankie's a cutie pie! Namaste 🙏
Agree..leave the animals alone...Frankie you are a beaut....Derek...you are helping to change the world from your kitchen!! Thank you
The value of this content is just priceless.🙏🏻 Love how you’ve elevated the staples in to something extra special. Encourages me to be more creative with the basics I enjoy. Always appreciate what you bring to the table.❤
I always think Frankie is "a good influence" on you! She is NOT always on a break, you cheeky man - she's your Quality Control Manager. Her supervision is what keeps you creative! Loving the opera accompanying this video at the start, Derek. Thank you for the education in this video. There's a lot there that I didn't know before and I know I will cook more confidently now. You call that basic bedrock cooking - which tells you the level I'm at (LOL) - but every time I learn something from one of your videos, things improve a little. I'm grateful for your work.
Really enjoying the peaceful energy of your videos, beautiful plant food, prepared mindfully with sweet Frankie 🙂🙏🏼 thank you
I've read almost all the comments on this video and I am amazed by how we all seem to have a similar kind of appreciation of your work, Derek. I hope you can feel the love and the gratitude - for you and the cooking and for your charming canine companion!
Derek, you are a kind and gifted man. I am thankful for you. God bless you richly.
We love you and beautiful Frankie!
I take kale stems and dehydrate them. Once dry, I powder them in my coffee grinder and store them in a Mason jar. It can be added to loads of things and no waste.
❤
This recipe looks amazing! Thank you so much for sharing with us. ❤
I’ve been the primary cook for my sons for a very long time. My youngest just went to college. I am in a relearning-to -feed myself period where it was, first, important to focus on recreating rituals around food. Then it struck me last week that I can cook what I like to eat. Your channel has been important for this learning. Thank you!
You videos are amazing and so inspiring ❤ dogs are truly the best friends anyone could have!
I just absolutely love you.
From right across the world -.
Moving towards plant-based foods, so the timing is perfect to find your channel.
Subscribed.
Love your no-fussness.
Love your knowledge and tips.
Love your kitchen habits.
Love your Frankie
The story you tell cooking is mesmerizing. This vid made me smile. And my mouth water. Thanks!
Wonderful video
Thanks Derek, for showing how easy it is to prepare amazing food.
Love your channel, I love the way you cook your greens they taste so much better thanks for the great tip
The only bad thing about this video is the fact I am now starving and it's the middle of the night 😂.
I kind of lost the drive to cook for myself after burning out a couple years ago, but I recently found your channel and I'm hooked. I've watched other vegan cooking channels off and on over the years, but there's something in your style and recipes that makes me feel like cooking again.
The practical tips and techniques are awesome for me, because I usually find a way to make all of the tasks take 5x longer and more complicated than necessary. It makes cooking feel like a luxury when I always have to multiply the prep times. It also doesn't help when so many cookbooks are too fancy for practical everyday cooking.
Really enjoyed this one, and the tips you share, especially for simplified low-waste living 🙏
Yes, I know, I say it every time...all the videos you create are fantastic, but you deserve praise so I'll keep saying it. Without a doubt, one of the top 3 channels on the internet imo (and who doesn't love seeing Miss Frankie too)!
Thank you for all that you teach us Derek, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge, and thank you for soothing my mental health without maybe even realising it 💚🌱
I've definitely become more creative in the kitchen since becoming completely plant-based. Thank you for continuing to inspire me with delicious ideas and combinations that allow me to enjoy my food and show respect to animals by not eating them
Absolutely love this recipe! I’m all over this! Can’t wait to make it and yes! Love being creative with recipes that do not include animals 💚 Going on 8 years vegan 🌱 wish it was longer. And yes! We all love Frankie 🥰 She is a doll 🐾
Success! Cooked kale and it tasted quite good! Lemon is a must ingredient. Saved it to my recipes. Thank you!
You are brilliant & wonderful to watch & learn from. I very much appreciate you sharing a bit of your personal journey. AND Plz don't give people who make negative statements get into your head or heart. They are suffering & don't know what else to do with their pain. I know you know this. Last, In The 4 Agreements, #1 is "Be impeccable with your word: Speak with integrity, avoid gossip, and don't use words against yourself." Sending love to you & your pup who you obviously adore!
This is Indian/West Indian style cuisine. The rice and greens and legume based vegan dishes are a staple and precisely what I grew up eating from my mom’s great cooking. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Thank you Derek. Always a pleasure seeing you whip up your scrumptious creations and sweet Franky ❤
Thank you kindly
You are both so lucky to have each other, bless you both xxx Lyn
Derek, it does my heart good to watch and learn how to prepare all these delicious veges and also see our beautiful Miss America, living her best life. (Lovely scarf too!) Thanks again!!
You , Frankie and your recipes can do no wrong! ❤ Thank you for your inspirations and good vibes for the love of animals and all things good !
I love your generous spirit in sharing these wonderful tutorials with us for free. Your videos always inspire me and remind me of the goodness in people. Thank you.
This looks divine. Thank ever so much for the inspiration for making delicious plant food.
Discovered your channel recently, and have been binge watching - you are truly a blessing. Thank you so much!
Beautiful presentation!! Thank you for sharing!
Been a huge fan for years and notice the heart and effort in the recent videos and am here for the journey!! Excited to try this one
You're absolutely wonderful. Thank you.
Thank you for keeping it simple! My best to you and Frankie!
thanks for spreading awareness
Really appreciate being able to see how a skilled chef prepares basic food. Basic is usually the healthiest, and it’s what we enjoy. Watching this kind of video helps me to improve the quality of my plant-based cooking for my family!
Hands down, the best in the game. Thank you for sharing these recipes with us, I feel a sense of peace when I watch these videos.
Guilt-free cooking and eating AND references to meditation and reading books - what's not to love?!
Thank you!
Love your no nonsense minimalist filming style…and your tasty recipes 😊
You're a man after my own heart. My dog is a necessity in this life joirney as well. But so is a garden. I'm more of a turnip green type person, but grow collards, chard, mustard and beets as well. This is my first incounter with your channel and just wanted to thank you for sharing. And for not eating animals.
You are an amazing human being - thank you - I love your videos and your love for the animals 😻
If I'm making a dish -- maybe a stew or a casserole -- that calls for both onions and something like kale, and where you cook the onions first to soften them, I have gotten into the habit of finely, finely dicing those thick kale stems and adding them with the onions. They cook down nicely, and you're getting all those extra nutrients and fiber, as well as not wasting a thing. Makes me feel like our old ancestors who would use every bit of whatever they had in the kitchen, because they couldn't afford not to.
I did just this evening with a batch of collards.
@@mvealey1 Heeeey, all right! I hope it turned out nicely for you. 👍
@@Jim_L collards and cornbread!
Me too when I remember, thanks for the reminder!
Thank YOU for being so kind ❤. Love the basic bedrock cooking style.
Derek Sarno, You are the best ❣️Thank you for doing this for us and teaching us about the culinary and techniques of cooking 🤗🫶🏻☀️🌱
OMG Love this recipe and the tip on cooking greens is just great.
Awesome! I've been cooking vegan for three years now and going vegan has reignited my love for cooking. I'm loving going through your videos and trying out some of this delicious, cruelty free food. Thank you.
Love your channel! So excited to find you. Thanks
I just can't get enough of your videos. Thank you so much for your amazing techniques! You're no-nonsense style and your beautiful dog. Frankie, I love the relationship you have with her. God bless you
Your vids are the awesome sauce on the day. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and techniques.
Derek, you do a great job of keeping your content so inspiring and also entertaining. Thank you!! ♥
Gorgeous! I make many versions of vegan bowls...color, texture, taste!!! Yummy❤
Beautiful. I love love garlicky greens! This is totally happening 🤗. Thank you.
Thanks a million Derek. Really enjoying your recipes and your guidance into the world of veggie eating. Much appreciated.
Loving your videos Derek. Thanks so much
Thank you, Derek! Awesome.
Excellent Derek. The mentor I always wanted. I appreciate you.
I feel so relaxed with you. Love your channel chef.🩶
For those of us who feel anxious in the kitchen …THANK YOU…this is great for me and I enjoy the video as well❤️
That looks delicious Derek! I am so looking forward to seeing you creat more delicious dishes of delight 😊
I started out with one of your books -'Wicked Healthy', loved it. I am a Brit living in Oregon for 24 years, I do not miss the grey unpredictable weather of the UK, miss some foods, and countryside. I love your videos, and Frankie. Have been vegetarian for 35 years. Thanks for keeping me inspired. 🙏🙏
Absolutely love your cooking dude, and your compassion.
Absolutely love your channel. This is a fantastic video...
Your videos are really fantastic. I'm feeling very excited about food again. I kind of was getting into a rut but I feel really inspired by you. As someone who has also been in the food industry for a long time, I really appreciate the fact that you have been a chef for so many years. There's something different about people who start out in the kitchen with animals and then become plant-based. You know how good food can be and you are recreating in a healthier more compassionate way. Please keep it up. We need you in this world
I made this and wow was it good. I had a bunch of swiss chard, kale and sorrel in my garden so used that instead of collard greens. Love this channel. I learn something new every time. thanks!
I love the feel of your recent videos. Recipes like this are one of the many reasons my wife and I have been vegan for almost 25 years: they're filling, realistic to make regularly, and result in leftovers! (And no oven, which is a good thing in Texas when summer arrives. [As you know, we have the opposite problem of English Grey.]) Thank you for all the effort you put into the videos and all you do 😀
I wasn't going to watch this, because I thought I know how to cook all these things. So glad I did. I have a garden full of kale. I have always just shredded it very finely and added it to things. Have never known to soften it in boiling water first. Thank you so much Derek. I love your style❤
Dear Mr Sarno, although I appreciate your creative meat-free ideas and the amazing recipes you share with us, this time I am particularly appreciative of you opening up about motivation. It does not come easy or natural to me, and my mind/ ego often spirals with narratives like “I am the only one lacking motivation sometimes” or “I am such a lazy TH-camr sometimes” or “Why am I so unskilled in creating TH-cam videos with all the free technology available?” or “Why spend hours editing a video for
You’re fantastic Dude. I found your channel a couple of days ago and this is the help I need! My husband and I are vegan, but I want to step it up to make better meals and encourage our kids who are interested.
Veganism is good for my body, good for the planet and it’s compassionate.
U have to be the BEST chef on youtube! Thx for taking the time to make real plant based home recipes. They aren't unreachable to me..an average at home cook.
Thanks for sharing! Your lovely recipes & great cooking tips!
I love synroncity as this recipe was in my feed, and I cooked chickpeas last night to make some hummus. I cook more than usually and I thought to check your recipes.
This will be great to make for my husband & son.
I can't wait to made this, looks so yummy.
I love your recipes and have your cookbook.
Much love to you & Frankie❤ From Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 Namaste 🙏 ❤🌟
This channel should be a massive help thank you. I became a type 1 diabetic a number of years ago after having most of my pancreas removed and the last couple of years have been a struggle. I kept being told to go keto as the lack of carbs meant less insulin, but never felt comfortable eating so much meat and fats. I saw the a show with two vegans who are T1 and push a vegan low fat high carb diet so transitioning to eating this way instead and your recipees look ideal. Thank you
Beautiful
Thank you 🙏
I am in a journey of breast cancer, you always change the direction of my day for the better🌸
Really enjoy and learn from your videos Derek!😋
