    OLD Leather Smith here, very nice. 1 have some suggestions, Bees or Paraffin wax on punches let the tool release from the leather easyer, add 1 more slots 2 the triangle piece and adjustments R easier, since I have been doing this 4 a while I have never used bottle edge shiner I always use mouth water apologies just doing it the old way. I like U showing all the steps, that's great 4 beginners. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

      Great suggestion on the wax, will look into getting some. Have a project in the works where this should come in super helpful.

    Even if I had your tools, I don't think I could do what you did even with you at my side!

      Don't underestimate yourself! You should have seen the first dozen projects I made...🤭or maybe better not...😂
      With a bit of practice I'm sure you could do just as good!

      Thanks! The tools are nice enough to get the job done and thankfully very affordable! Next tool I think will be a bell skiver.

    Here’s a tip - when burnishing long strips of leather... place the leather between two planks of wood with SCRAP leather in between

      Great suggestion! I've seen that done bit didn't have any planks of wood handy. Absolutely would have made it easier.

      Thank you! Can't stop looking for more reasons to wear them!

    I’m thinking of using leather instead of flat elastic straps as well but I’m a bit concerned that the leather dye might bleed to my clothes. I live in a very hot and humid country and I do sweat a lot.

      @SideStreetLeather  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If you are going to dye it yourself you will want to seal it with something like Fiebing's Resolene. This should keep the dye from bleeding. I didn't dye the underside of the straps which will help ensure it doesn't bleed. I've worn the suspenders exclusively with white shirts and have had no issues but I do not usually wear them when it is hot so I cannot say what might happen.

    Basically build a stitching pony except it’s longer and shorter to hold your leather while burnishing

      Yeah, I understand what you are suggesting. I've seen it used for belts. I now have access to a wood workshop and would try that there in the future. Great suggestion and good explanation!

    Sir, where did you get your strap skiver?

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are available on many ecommerce websites. I think Amazon has them for about $30 but they aren't very good except for very small pieces like I showed. It is cheap but you also only get what you pay for. I've since bought a bell skiver that I use exclusively. I know spending that much on a bell skiver isn't an option for everyone but it is worth the money. Looking back I would have told myself to get a French Skiver and practice with that instead of getting the strap skiver in the video.

    • @kevinorr6880
      @kevinorr6880 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SideStreetLeather Thank you. Skivers are crazy expensive and a good old one is very hard to find. A bell skiver is on the list of “will purchase one day”.

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinorr6880 keep an eye open for on on local buy/sell groups or forums. That is how I got mine for "cheap." Before that, just practice lots of skiving with a sharp blade. Good luck!

      Hi! This pattern requires about 2 square feet of leather. I used a piece that was 30cm x 60cm.
