"Bottle in a bottle" honestly looks like a way to sell a tiny amount of product in a way that looks like you're getting more. A lot of them are still plastic bottles, but slightly smaller. You just have a cuter carry case for them as well.
The thing with them are you could just buy the pouch and not the og package at all that way it’ll also reduce waste EDIT:I didn’t see the comment that said it already
Honestly, unless I want the packaging for some reason (the soap dispensers are useful and more practical when I'm showering, they don't spill and it's easier to "dose" the amount of soap), I just go with the refil. With some things like paint I can just put the refil in a different container. I see plenty of paint palette containers online all the time which are cuter and cheaper.
You could also just reuse another container and put the refill in like I have a ceramic hand soap dispenser and I put the soap rhat I like most into the bottle
@@AxelXionSora here we do that too, but more often than not is just reusing old packages that are good quality until they break. You know, reduce, reuse, recycle. One of my soap dispensers lasted for 2 years one, unfortunately the white plastic of the lid started to crack and slowly fall apart. Sometimes we also use the packages of my mom's moisturizer (she loves moisturizers so she gets a lot of them), they're surprisingly sturdy!
Absolutely love in store refill stations! YT limits shorts to under 1 min, so didn't have time to get to them in this video....but i think they deserve an entire video. Adding it to my list of videos to film!
My local recycles their store-brand shampoo/conditioner/bodywash/etc bottles. That lets the container be sterilized between uses, much less likely to give you pet fungal colony.

The bottle in a bottle has never made sense, the original container needs a reduction in materials because that outer packaging uses so much wasted plastic.
I wish more companies did any kind of refil. I have no idea what to do with my empty Clinique moisturiser containers and they are so ridiculously big and bulky for the amount of product that came in them. I decanted some into a travel container once and I ended up just using that and refilling it as I could at least put it in my handbag too. Even the little tubes from Clinique aren’t recycled locally to me and I have no idea what to do with them so they don’t end up in landfill.
i believe ulta has a recycling service as well! the containers just have to be super clean and dry before you deposit them, though. i’d assume most big beauty retailers will have a comparable recycling service available.
the one thing that will always piss me off is bottles in bottles. nine times out of ten the inner component is what the lid actually attaches to so once you have the product, the main component is useless
idk if I'd even classify "bottle in a bottle" as recycling, considering you basically just buy two bottles and then another one for the "refill" instead of one bottle per product. I think the best is simply to make products with compostable packaging, so you don't have to worry as much about how much material the refill uses up.
The problem with compostable packaging is that you have to actually compost it. Which only happens in specific circumstances. If you just throw away compostable packaging, it's sitting around with the other garbage; it's not melting away to nothing. I consider most "compostable" marketing as greenwashing, frankly.
That last one- OneSkin, the packaging is awful. The pumps break all the time, and you need to end up purchasing new ones because they’re so bad- and this was after they so-called “fixed” the problem with them. Also, you can’t ever get out all of the cream. I’d always have to end up cutting it open when it still had a few weeks worth of cream left, just to be able to get it out. I eventually stopped using it because it was so ridiculous.. and not to mention *very* expensive.. 120$ a bottle. If they made the outer part, the shell, and the pump more durable (and nicer to look at) I’d consider using them again.
Appreciate you sharing your experience!! I haven't had that issue (knock on wood 🚪) but I'm only on my 1st bottle. Fingers crossed this can be rectified bc it's such a great refill system (in theory)
I honestly like the refill pouches for hair care. It’s so much easier to get it all out before throwing it away and I have so much hair right now that pumps take a while to get enough out.

Bottle in a bottle is still bottle and most of them function without the priginal packaging... With means its more a suggestion of sustainability rather than honest pursuit of sustainability
Honestly, it would be better if those hybrid refill pouches didn’t come with the outer plastic and instead had the brand shit printed onto the pouches with all necessary information on the back. Make the pouches able to stand on their own and that would probably save a lot of
I've also seen a body splash/ deodorant from Boticario wich it's refill is just the same bottle with a foil lid, you unscrew the spraying top from the empty bottle onto the new one after pulling the metal lid and you're good to go!! I love it sm
I don’t know if you’ve covered this yet but Bath and Bodyworks has refillable soap bottles where the actual soap is in a paper carton and they sell glass bottles to go with it
I wish sustainability could be highlighted more in the beauty industry. From ingredients to packaging, this little topic could save consumers hundreds of dollars annually if implemented properly. There’s nothing that angers me more than companies promoting faux sustainability practices. Thank you for bringing attention to this
@annastasiakohen absolutely love that you highlighted ingredients!! 🙌💖 So often the industry focuses solely on packaging sustainability, without ever addressing the sustainability of the ingredients we use, formulas we develop or supply chains we create!
These companies are honestly playing in our faces, like they want these refills to seem like they’re good for sustainability, but the fact that most of them don’t care about making the refill packages biodegradable speaks volumes. It’s just a marketing ploy to get people to buy the same product over and over again, in shittier packaging that’s cheaper for the company to produce, but that is still ultimately not good for the environment bc it’s still usually just plastic in a different form
Airless pumps definitely can have a higher restitution rate, which is especially helpful when you're using a product with a hefty price tag....I don't know about you, but I want every last drop 😂
The only time i find the bottle in a bottle refill usefull is , when the outer bottles has something that needs to be there to use the product, if i want that lotion ima justnbuy the refill and use a different container i alrwdy have as storage
I have never seen refills for beauty products in my country (germany) usually it's a new packaging alltogether every time 😮 the only pouch refill i know of is handsoap in 500ml or 750ml. Even quick google search only showed me 3 brands that offer these type of products which is very interesting.
there is DEFINITELY refill options for hair shampoo at DM, it has the same packaging as the hand soap. also at some shops you can by shampoo, conditioner, soap, dishwashing liquid, detergent (for clothes) in bulk and fill it into your own containers. you also have the option to by solid soaps, which use only paper packaging and last quite a long time. there are also razors sold at dm where you only change the razor metal bit so you dont need to buy new platsic packaged razor refills EVER AGAIN. the skincare examples she showed are super high-end with fancy packaging I am sure you can find stuff like that at sephora? but the drogerie skincare we have already comes in minimal packaging like the refills she showed so what would you be refilling?
I have long been skeptical of the "bottle in a bottle" refill system, thanks for confirming it doesn't actually help very much unless you're habitually reourchasing that product. How does the component material factor in? For example, the Glow Recipe outer bottle is glass, which is highly recyclable with little to no loss in quality/purity. Whereas the inner package that the consumer is reourchasing, the "refill" part, is plastic, which significantly reduces in quality each time it is recycled. I would almost think we would be better off, environmentally, if consumers simply recycled or reused the glass containers rather than purchasing new plastic "refill" pods.
But it still doesn't solve the problem of waste. It just creates new waste. Instead their should be refill station where from big container small container can be filled.
I think the industry ideally should move towards refill stations, but currently we don't have the infrastructure to ensure that everyone in the US has a refill station accessible to them. There's also the logistical challenge of shipping formulas in bulk to fill the refill stations up. And hygiene also continues to be a concern...however I'm hopefully refill stations become more accessible and affordable 🙌
Even the refill stations have SOME waste, as the product needs to be shipped to the store in something. It's certainly reduced waste compared to the packaging needed to sell individual consumer-sized products, but the difference between a refill pouch and a refill station is essentially just a matter of scale, it's not a fundamental difference in kind. The refill station reduces waste even more than the refill pouch, but neither is ZERO waste. And many, many people don't live near stores that offer bulk refills of stuff. I live in a farm town, I'd have to drive almost an hour to get to the nearest zero waste store. And I'm lucky that my nearest one is even that close. It's just not happening for me, realistically. The refill pouches are better than my next most available option, which is regular product packaging.
My favorite moisturizer is the skin fix peptide one that has the little pump on it and the refil is a bottle in a bottle design but you get to reuse the pump and the casing… I think in this case it’s good enough for me!
This kind of thing is why I love Youth To The People. They sell SO much of their cleanser, and its one of the only cleansers that my skin doesn't hate, in a refill pouch and it lasts me forever. 100% worthwhile. The bottle in a bottle thing is so stupid lol.
I feel that it is actually more wasteful if you still have to buy new containers......that go in containers. Suprise. More waste. The only way to make it less wasteful would be to use very old makeup techniques such as how face powder used to be pressed into your own personal compact and when the powder was completely used up, you'd just get it re-pressed into the same compact. Now that is reducing waste.
It's interesting looking to the past for sustainable packaging solutions!! To your point, I'm hopeful the industry starts to implement more reusable packaging in the future
Best refill technique is going to a bulk bin store and buying from a refill machine. Usually you.can only get hair products, soaps and moisturizer this way but it means no excess packaging at all.
Pouch refills seem like a great idea if you can refill them in store for a fraction of the price because the product can go bad before you use it all. But if it's body wash, shampoo and conditioner it would be a game changer
The biggest problem with the pouches is they’re (usually) much less recyclable than a hard plastic or glass jar/bottle, which can offset some of the savings of reduced material used. It obviously depends on local recycling systems for what’s accepted, but something to keep in mind
The issue with the pouch refills is that these materials are often not recyclable. With the bottle to bottle refills, the harder plastics are often more readily recyclable (I.e. glow recipe moisturiser pods). It isn’t exactly a like for like comparison, while carbon emissions may be lower with pouch refills, they are far more likely to end up in landfill as opposed to being recycled.
The pouches aren’t recyclable in my area, but the containers mostly are, can you please speak to this and advise whether the pouches are still a better option in relation to this?
I love refill pouches. I have the Josie Maran moisturizer and I bought the refill pack by itself instead of the jar because I loved their formula before the revamp
But considering soft plastics aren’t recyclable in most places but the harder plastics can be up to three times before it’s trash, I’m not sure this is the way either. I’d die for a store to open that allows you to bring back the same bottle to use over and over. Reduce and reuse should always come before recycle as we only recycle plastics up to three times unlike infinitely recyclable glass and metals.
All great callouts!! Pouches definitely aren't a perfect solution, but until we're able to offer in-store refill stations for high usage products (as you mention!) they're one of the better solutions currently offered on the market. Hoping as the industry continues to innovate we'll get more effective solutions 🙏🙏
Bottle in a bottle doesn’t sound like a refill to me. If my phone break, i take it out of its protective case and put a new phone in that case im not getting a phone refill. 😂
What? Why are you comparing moisturizer to a phone? The bottle in a bottle is a refill, since they are made to be inserted into a permanent package. The glow recipe refill for example, is in a plastic tub and it has a foil top. So if you don't put the refill into the permanent packaging, you won't have a top. You cannot use the refill without the permanent packaging, so your phone comparison just doesn't work, at all.
@@AKbaby89 the Grey bottles she showed at the start legit looked like the outside packaging you put the refill in was literally just a pretty outter shell you could easily go without by only buying the "refill", that's why. Did you know those multi layer pouches are one of the least able to recycle? Manufacturers need to do better.
I think I would just use it from the pouch
Bottle in a bottle is still bottle and most of them function without the priginal packaging... With means its more a suggestion of sustainability rather than honest pursuit of sustainability
Well said 👏
Honestly, it would be better if those hybrid refill pouches didn’t come with the outer plastic and instead had the brand shit printed onto the pouches with all necessary information on the back.
Ooo I need to look this refill up!!
This song is so cute! 🫶
my boyfriend just uses the product right out of the refill pouch. He doesn't put it in the refillable container. i appreciate how chaotic he is lol
Lol love that😂 bf helping to reduce his environmental impact, one chaotic choice at a time 😂👏👏👏
I don’t know if you’ve covered this yet but Bath and Bodyworks has refillable soap bottles where the actual soap is in a paper carton and they sell glass bottles to go with it
Thank you for this video!
😊🩷🩷🩷
that's the kinda Info I expect from a TH-cam short. 🔥
Bro when she said she worked at cosmetic packaging l thought she said she worked at Costco packaging💀
😂😂😂 clearly I need to speak slower and enunciate
Im wondering if maybe a refill campaign similar to what Lush does in collecting their pots gives you some reward upon returning them?
Amika shampoo is so good & I love the refill packaging it makes me feel good as a consumer
Airless pumps are the best for using up all the product. Like the maybelline age rewind you can squeeze out every single last drop.
I love using the refills on their own...often times the outer keepsake component is so unnecessary
ive never understood the bottle in a bottle ones. it doesnt even feel like a refill, it just feels like putting a cover over the product.
@@sockpuppetqueen beautifully summarized 👏👏👏
I saw hand soap in a milk carton and i love it! Its so cute and it has like three uses out of it before you would need to buy another one
I don't know why but I'm obsessed with the word "pouch"
The pouch cartridge also has the added benefit of making me feel like we're living in the future!
The last one is genius, I don't know why I don't see them at all in the market...
Honestly, I would just buy the refill pouches
That's what I've been doing for my facial cleanser, and I love it!
Right? So much more sustainable and cheaper.
Pouch refills are my favorite . Using day and night sleep on mask then put them in an already used up washed + sanitized foundation pump bottle!
SKKN’s refil feels like a total joke to me, like the bottle feels so pointless, I would just buy the refill at that point
100%
My favorite moisturizer is the skin fix peptide one that has the little pump on it and the refil is a bottle in a bottle design but you get to reuse the pump and the casing… I think in this case it’s good enough for me!
This kind of thing is why I love Youth To The People. They sell SO much of their cleanser, and its one of the only cleansers that my skin doesn't hate, in a refill pouch and it lasts me forever. 100% worthwhile. The bottle in a bottle thing is so stupid lol.
I've been using the second thing for soap literally my entire life. It actually took a few yers for me to learn about bars of soap xD
L'occitane has refills for their products as well as low waste packaging
Im not using make-up, but im still happy to end up on your videos to learn about make-up.
Awe thanks love!!🫶
I love this channel
I feel that it is actually more wasteful if you still have to buy new containers......that go in containers. Suprise. More waste. The only way to make it less wasteful would be to use very old makeup techniques such as how face powder used to be pressed into your own personal compact and when the powder was completely used up, you'd just get it re-pressed into the same compact. Now that is reducing waste.
It's interesting looking to the past for sustainable packaging solutions!! To your point, I'm hopeful the industry starts to implement more reusable packaging in the future
The pouch is top teir
Refill pouches can also be used without buying the outer packaging which makes them cheaper
Refill pouches have been a staple in Japan for decades now. It's surprising that this wasn't a common thing in the West until recently.
I love option 3
The biggest problem with the pouches is they’re (usually) much less recyclable than a hard plastic or glass jar/bottle, which can offset some of the savings of reduced material used. It obviously depends on local recycling systems for what’s accepted, but something to keep in mind
This is great but god it's all plastic 😫
I accidentally bought a 3 pack of sunscreen refill pouches and honestly its a game changer cuz I can squeeze out the product to the last drop
Lets popularise and make refills to trend so more companies do refills 😍
sometimes with the bottle in a bottle Ill just buy the refills and not get the outer bottle at all
The pouches aren’t recyclable in my area, but the containers mostly are, can you please speak to this and advise whether the pouches are still a better option in relation to this?
I love refill pouches. I have the Josie Maran moisturizer and I bought the refill pack by itself instead of the jar because I loved their formula before the revamp
I legit only buy refil pouches😭 like i have shampoo and conditioner bottles that are filled with other stuff haha
You’re replacing plastic with plastic just the shape is different and all recycling gets broken down so what’s the point except saving a bit of money?
What's the point of what? Buying refills?
The first idea is so infuriatingly stupid I wouldn’t blame aliens for killing us for it.
Hoping as the industry continues to innovate we'll get more effective solutions 🙏🙏
this is so cool

There’s brands like Byoma where the refill is just the same bottle without the pump
All of these refills should be in much larger quantities, since larger volumes save on the packaging to product ratio.
Are the refill pouches also reusable/recyclable? Im not very familiar w refillable products so Id love to learn more !
It depends, some refill pouches are...but many of them are mixed materials (meaning they can't be recycled)
i only buy the refill part of it, which should be standard
Like honestly if the refill bottle work on its own then it's not a refill imo.
@@CosmindArt if you pay attention, the bottle within the bottle products do not have tops or pumps. They are made to be used in permanent packaging, like I said above.
@@AKbaby89 both of the Grey bottles shown swapping inside and out the container that I specifically pointed out each have their own pump nosles. I rewatched that part twice to make sure. I have eyes thanks. 😂
@@CosmindArtoh you mean the one without the lid? Therefore leaving it open if you don't have the outer packaging? That one?
In Japan we use refill pouches! I love refilling my shampoos and such. It feels better the buying another big hunk of plastic!
I used to just buy the refills and not buy the base container in the first place or ise my own jars/bottles ❤!!!
I love buying and using refill pouches on their own! 😊🙌
