I find Erik with the Boomerang very useful through out the whole Demo Length. Not sure how effective it is , past the Demo Length of Real Game though. Of course if fighting 1 Enemy, Switch Erik's Boomerang with a Knife if has higher Strength of Boomerang.
As someone that has already played the game, dual knives is definitely the way to go if you want him to be absurdly broken. Of course he is still great with boomerangs too, though. I let him use them my first time playing but am going with knives for XIS.

So something I'm not sure you're aware of or not, but in the equipment menu it says "My outfits" or something near the bottom of your equipped list? You can change what appearance you have there as long as you have (or had? not sure) the equipment in your inventory (at some point). I took a quick peek at your latest video to see if you figured that out, but didn't see anything suggesting it at a glance and I'm not done with this video yet.

I'm a newbie and was wondering, what should I set my battle mode to? I am only at the part escaping the dungeon with Erik. Does it matter if I fight myself? Or should I just set it for them to fight monsters without me attacking or using spells? Like let the computer do it. I am confused.
But you should know that I've beaten this whole game twice, (both in 3D) the second time with all the Draconian restrictions, (Except the Wheel of Harma secret trial and the Tickington stuff/Timewyrm I did all that on my first playthrough, but it proved to be extremely difficult in Draconian) and it was an amazing experience. Going through Tickington in my first playthrough also taught me how to read Olden English with ease. I ended up gifting this game to a dear friend of mine, and I wanted to experience the game one more time in some way. So I came to this playlist. This is literally the only playthrough I can find of the game with the symphonic music intact, with English VA, and the S exclusive side stories in-between Act I and Act II. I thank you for that. Seriously this game is a masterpiece of storytelling and it doesn't deserve to be so underrated in the west. Also, the devs behind the 2D mode of this game also made the remake of Super Mario RPG recently. (It's releasing in 2 days as I write this)
So I haven't played any JRPG-style games since Chrono Trigger and earlier Final Fantasy games. No particular reason, just got deep into western RPG's and action-adventure games over the years. But recently I've decided I'm going to pick up a Nintendo Switch, and in the process have gotten the itch to get back into JRPG's for the first time in almost 20 years...QUESTION: Are the Dragon Quest games all standalone stories, for the most part? Will I thoroughly enjoy this game, without having played any of the other entries in the series?

if you have it once armor with a star (that's what changed the look) then you can wear (change outfit) it without the star thing on it

We learnt yesterday that defeating the Black Dragon under Heliodor's sewers actually unlocks a secret scene. Does someone know what it's about ? :)
You'd have to wait a while to find out! You aren't able to fight the Dragon till MUCH later in the game!
Went all the way back to the beginning at level 31 beating the black dragon takes away the chase part you have with it which is kind of nice
