This was an outstanding video essay! Great job! First of all, I'm pleased to see someone do something in-depth on Ozu, but to show his similarities to a modern-day filmmaker (and someone from another culture and background) is truly unexpected and refreshing to see. I cannot over-stress how much I enjoyed and appreciated this video!
this is amazing. I love Wes Anderson's artworks, but this is the first time I know about Yasujiro Ozu. you make me want to watch Ozu's movies. Thank you for letting us know about brilliants masterpiece. good luck!
This is so gooood. The first time I heard of Yasujiro Ozu, I kept thinking of how much his work must have inspired Wes Anderson, but I never really looked for indications. I'm happy to see someone talk about this!
I'm so glad I stumbled on this video. Just got into Ozu and this really makes me appreciate his work. Great to see the parallel between him and Anderson : )
Excellent, great artists become great by learning from each other, sometimes seeing through each other’s eyes the same subject. Art doesn’t exist in a vacuum
This is a lovely tribute to Wes Anderson and Yasujiro Ozu. Thanks for your visual essay. I hope you can make more videos like this. You are great Anna Catley. Greetings from Asia, Indonesia :)
I just learned about Yasujiro Ozu yesterday on another video. My first thought was that Wes Anderson's style is very similar to this. The next day, your video pops up in my feed. Great job @Anna Catley.
PLEASE keep making more videos like these. You're exceptionally talented at visualizing and analyzing the art of film. It's 4 in the morning right now and this kept me entertained. Don't give up!
Congratulations ,that was a solid video essay. Two really "visual" artists one really ahead of his time and the other really vintage. I am sure if Ozu was here ,he 'd be a W. Anderson fan too.
What a wonderfully in depth analysis! Your attention to detail regarding multiple aspects of cinema is befitting of two directors who share that quality as well. Thanks for this.
Thank you for making this. The comparisons made were great! I like the idea of a "Visual Essay", not that normal essays or written material can't be just as articulate, but the way you formatted all of the points with a voice over and visuals made it really digestible. Thanks again, made me really interested in watching all of those films.
Check this out guys! Two of my favorite directors XD You don't need any fancy crane shots, you can do a simple animation using the same technique and beautiful shots. Enjoy some inspiration :D
"The core of this cinematic relationship is an exploration of themes and narratives." Grammatically speaking, that is an excellent sentence, and a concretely stated thesis. Bravo, young lady.
Whatever are you talking about (?) "Relationship" . . ."themes" . . . and "narratives" are all ABSTRACTIONS. There's no concrete meaning in this sentence whatsoever. And how can "an exploration" be the core of a relationship (?) That's rhetorically very un-excellent. At the minimum, is should be "the exploration" . . .
Excellent video essay, it's really made me aware of the nostalgic flare I put in my own writing. Whenever I learn something new about film, I always apply it to whatever I'm working on at the moment to see if it fits, and my current project is definitely a story of nostalgia and memory. Plenty of classic rock as well.
Many thanks for this video. I'm just discovering Wes Anderson's films, very much charmed by his humor and and and... Thanks to you, and this video I'll hope to discover Yasujiro Ozu's films as well. Thanks once more!
So glad I found this video! Recently discovered Ozu and I couldn’t help but to feel some connection between him and Anderson, whom I also adore. Thank you for your work, it gave me enough food for thought
This was really good! It was so easy to follow and the emphasis on the way both directors explore themes of family was fantastic! Moving beyond the visuals of the medium and studying the use of the medium in films of both directors was presented so neatly, loved it!! Thank you!!
You should really keep up this amazing work, I'm so interested in these comparisons and analysis; I think that your videos are made with a really nice touch, greetings from Italy. :)
The music needs to be mixed like 3db lower, but i loved this! You have an awesome knowledge base and for some reason it's so calming to hear your full vocabulary. There's so few visual essays by women so keep it up! x
Fantastic video essay, Anna. You have made me more interested in Ozu's oeuvre than before. I am glad to have found another film-centred video essay channel to subscribe to.
That was a very fun video to watch. Thanks for the effort. I was looking into Wong Kar Wai then Hsiao-Hsien Hou, and that brought me to Ozu whom I'd never heard of before, which brought me to this video. I'd love to see a video or read something from you on Wong Kar Wai.
This is really well done, you can tell you really spent some time on this. As a fan of both directors, this makes total sense. I wouldn't have paired the two on my own, but this will be interesting when I watch their films again.
This is pretty great. I've recently started watching Ozu and my mind did go to Anderson, probably due to the symmetry and face close-ups like you say. Thanks for this, terrific essay, really well done. Hope you're well.
Thanks, very nice analysis...when I've watched a couple of weeks ago at the cinema my first Ozu film (Good Morning) I thought that there were something in common with Anderson..I didn't expect so many things!
Great stuff. I'm glad you focused on the more broader similarities in approach rather than trying to draw direct comparisons - look forward to more videos
Very very great video :) A lot of the best video essay creators here on TH-cam somewhat lack clarity in their associated visuals and explanations... and don't organize and structure themselves properly. This essay I feel examples what others should improve on, so I really love this even if some of your sound editing is amateur (who cares, you can improve with time!) I would note that the biggest downfall to the audio issue isn't that it makes the video worse, but that it makes film teachers and groups less likely to show others or present it to classrooms. But other than that it is not a big problem. Every Frame A Painting is probably the most well-rounded on TH-cam that I can think of. He does a really stellar job.
Had something really interesting happen today. Was looking for a good thanksgiving movie to watch and after typing in "autumn" in HBO Max, I stumbled across vintage japanese films due to his movies having seasons in them. I figured there must have been some connection and surely, after seeing they all had the same director, that's how I learned of Ozu. So excited to view his films.
Its a shame these types of videos arent more popular. Film and art examination is really fascinating and always helps me in developing my own style.
Brilliant. I'm learning more about movies from TH-cam videos than I did from the handful of cinema courses I took back in college.
This is the best Wes Anderson analysis video on TH-cam.

great stuff, you are really good at this, make more videos please! we need more people like you who understands cinema
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the positive feedback. I'll definitely be making more in the future!
This is so gooood. The first time I heard of Yasujiro Ozu, I kept thinking of how much his work must have inspired Wes Anderson, but I never really looked for indications. I'm happy to see someone talk about this!

Great video and analysis!! Loved the use of examples too. Didn't realize two of my favorite directors had much more in common than I thought.

Many thanks for this video. I'm just discovering Wes Anderson's films, very much charmed by his humor and and and...
Thanks to you, and this video I'll hope to discover Yasujiro Ozu's films as well. Thanks once more!
Very thoughtful video. Thank you for posting this.

There are only 5 directors that I know every film will be wonderful - Ozu, Anderson, Kurozawa, the Coen Brothers, and Tarantino
So glad I found this video! Recently discovered Ozu and I couldn’t help but to feel some connection between him and Anderson, whom I also adore. Thank you for your work, it gave me enough food for thought

So disappointing that you don't have more videos. This is a really good video essay.
Enjoyed this very much, thank you.
Kind regards,
A big Wes Anderson fan.
Great video, but at certain points it is difficult to hear the speaker audio over the background audio. Don't be afraid to speak up. Be lively!
Or simply adjust the volume of the respective audio tracks.
+Peter Doria Audio has never been my strong suit unfortunately! I'll make sure it's better balanced in the next video. Thank you for the feedback!
Was going to say that as well, fantastic essay otherwise though.
agreed
The audio was fine. You can pause it and turn it up lmao.
