I actually think you not knowing about base SM64 gives this video a very unique aura. It's like a creepypasta protagonist who hears about a game that gives so many people, including their friends, nostalgia in a comfy but unsettling way. So they decide to buy a copy of the game themselves to check it out, only they don't get the game most other people do. Then they try to talk to those friends like "yeah I get what you said about it being kind of creepy, the first level taking place in a pitch black void was pretty uncanny." Only for their friend to respond "... What are you talking about? None of the levels look like that."
1:33:08 God, knowing what that piano does in the original game and seeing you just toy around with it in this romhack is really stress-inducing. It’s like watching a puppy play with a jaguar while the Jaguar just tolerates it.
I just _knew_ that the game was going to do something there, I know what that piano normally does through cultural osmosis, and the game... did nothing. It managed to completely subvert my expectations, and I am *here* for it.
It’s deeply fascinating seeing someone who has no familiarity with Mario 64’s weirdness play this. Someone familiar with the game wouldn’t think twice about the floating eyeball enemy, and immediately know how to defeat it, but to The Librarian, it’s kinda confusing and offputting
its wild. I assume the romhack would have figured you'd play the orginal, so youd know to defeat bowser, or long jump, or all of that. what the numbers mean when you unlock certain things. Recording your self and watching it wasnt a thing when it came out, but i imagine this is what it was like figuring stuff out on your own.
In the original Super Mario 64, the castle wasn't all that big. There was a front door leading into the ground floor lobby, and beyond that there was a basement and a second floor. It was all normal for what you'd expect from a castle, fairly congruent with its design, and undeniably iconic. There were fifteen courses, and they were all very cut and dry. There was a grassy battlezone populated by Bob-Ombs, a vertical tower upon which the Thwomp King ruled, a desert world, a lava world, a few water and ice-themed courses, and three Bowser levels. The game was revolutionary, but it always felt a little lacking. You always wanted there to be... _more._ More _castle,_ more _courses,_ just... _more places._ Imagine that there stands a single door before you, and behind that door stands three more, and behind each of those doors is four more, and along the way, you'll come out of a door some dozens of doors later and find yourself standing before a single door again. That's what B3313 is. It's more castle. Wherever you go, and however long you search, there'll always be _more castle._ You could walk through door after door for hours, and it'll only be after hours that you find the hallways have started _repeating._ There never _stops_ being more castle. There's always another door to go through. There's always more fun to be had. But it's not Super Mario 64. Very little of what you experienced was in the original game, and even what seemed familiar wasn't... _right._ Nothing is how it should be; nothing makes sense. Nothing's congruent, there's no way of knowing what's behind any door, and what you _think_ you knew is more like a scattered memory. It's like a funhouse mirror or a rippling pond; everything stands just... _an inch to the left,_ or the geometry is _bigger_ or _smaller than it should be, or... _ distorted_ and _uncanny._ The music is never right. The shading isn't right. The HUD is wrong, and it keeps... _changing_ between levels. The enemies don't look the same, and Mario sounds like someone else. His moveset is all wrong, and the physics don't work the same. Luigi isn't supposed to be here, and... there was never a _painting of Peach there before._ A shadow stalks the endless halls. You're still trapped inside your own walls. The Toads peer back with blank faces. _It hurts. I'm not having fun. Turn it off._ Can you hear the Princess calling? ... ...Didja like my dramatic prose? Anyways, I was a little leery when I heard you hadn't ever played SM64 before, but I think the nauseous levels of confusion really added to the experience! It played very well into the kind of phenomenon you're always talking about, where the childhood memories you have of something just... _aren't right,_ and when you try to recreate them, everything just feels _wrong_ and _uncanny._ In trying to imagine what it was _supposed_ to be like without _knowing,_ I think the feeling came down on you _twofold!_ This hack _really_ isn't for beginners, but you provided a truly unique outlook in playing it as one, so I'd be very interested in seeing more! I'm a _huge_ fan of B3313, myself, and it was a special kind of _freeing_ to watch you bumble about, _stars in your eyes,_ chasing whichever door seemed most interesting. My only experience with this hack has been _mapping_ it, which, by the way, is _horrendously tedious!_ In the outdated version I gave up on mapping, the one you're playing, the map I made had over a _thousand_ data points of entrances, exits, and potential courses-and I wasn't even _close_ to done. With the dozens of hours I devoted to it, there were still a _bunch_ of areas I watched you go to that I'd just never _seen_ before. It's even worse in the Unabandoned version, which has... I believe somewhere above _400_ stars in it. There are rooms upon endless rooms, some of them loop into identical rooms which are actually _different,_ and as you get more stars, I've heard that some entrances actually just _change._ If you haven't picked it up, yet, the hack is largely predicated around the phenomenon of liminal spaces, and it strives to present every individual room as _disconnected, jarring,_ and _slightly eerie._ I genuinely think that, if you were to devote the _Librarian treatment_ to each and every room, isolating it and examining it as a sole entity, you'd probably never run out of content. There's just... _so much castle_ to explore, and it's all _super janky._ Not that there aren't _other_ draws, as well. Hidden with varying degrees of success throughout the game are what the community calls _horror events,_ where... _bad stuff_ tends to happen. You found that cave in the castle grounds, which is probably the easiest to stumble on considering it just about tells you _don't go in here, it's spoooky._ I was biting my lip as you went through the Internal Sewer System, though, because you entered through a junction that allows you to find _another_ horror event, and you just happened to go down the safe tunnel. So... if you wanna see somethin' _freaky,_ you could retrace your steps in a revisit! As Yoshi said, though, it's best to experience this as a _dream._ Let the doors take you where they will, let your feet guide you, and you'll have _all_ the SM64 you could ever want. Forever.
Right off the bat, your point about that era of games being kind of creepier than they intended to be, SMB64 was actually one of the first games that gave me legitimate anxiety because the underwater levels terrified me. And they still kind of do to this day. And I was like 16 at the time when it came out. But the feeling of disorientation and the limited controls and general new, unrefined approach towards 3d polygon rendering really made that stuff tense.
I agree too, but I also think he should maybe play a small amount of regular Mario 64 before the next episode, for comparison purposes and to learn some of the basic mechanics; OR, if he wants to protect the entirely blank slate he's coming to this with and thus the unique viewpoint and experience he's having, just talk to someone who knows how the game works (literally just so he can learn, like, long jumps and how to kill ghosts to access the items inside really, stuff that lets him access more of the game rather than "spoiling" anything)
@Zanfitto-sc1lg exactly! It feels like a wholly new experience, not just a veteran who knows the limits of the game and is trying to see how far it goes, this is more of an experience and i love
To be clear, this is actually VERY different from the original. Still, quite interesting to see someone not know what's different and what's original. To think your memories of this game going forward will be so different from most people's is a bit like a Mandela Effect, which I think is part of the point of the romhack in the first place.
I'd definitely recommend playing this more like an exploration simulator than a standard collectathon platformer. The aim of the game isn't at all to get all of the stars, there are far too many for that to be feasible, getting lost and forging your own paths of areas you want to explore is part of the fun. There is much to explore in the castle. Ps. After collecting a red star, try to explore Marios move-set a little more! (Very exited for part 2)
It’s because he was on the title screen for longer than 35 seconds. That enables “act one” which seems to make the creepy stuff happen more often, as well as seemingly making the games teleports more unstable as I got hopelessly lost after thinking I had a tag on where everything was.
I genuinely love this because you always make it seem like every video is your first exposure to video games ever and it just puts a really funny/sweet vibe
Seems like hardly anybody's bringing up the fact that an updated 1.0 version of the hack just released. It's definitely worth playing, seeing as it fixes duplicate stars, and adds in a few more areas.
This honestly makes me want you to check out Doom 64. The ambiance in that game is unlike any other Doom game. It's still Doom, but the soundtrack is much more on the eerie and spooky side. That game blasting out of a CRT at two in the morning blew my mind when I was young
I also mentioned Doom PS1 and Doom 64 under the House.wad video. I prefer the ambience of the PS1 version myself but 64 is definitely better for exploration.
I would LOVE to see you play through this ROMhack and *then* play the original Mario 64. It would be such a unique perspective considering people usually go about it the other way.
I remember playing the 2002 Spider-Man game, based on the Sam Raimi movie, having a creepy atmosphere that probably wasn't intended. The first time I booted it up on the PC, I started the Tutorial level. Once the loading finished, I was treated with a black screen with only the HUD that showed the health and the character portrait staring at me. What didn't help was the constant sound of wind and ethereal wooshing that went along with it. I could move the character, as I could hear only footsteps when I pressed the movement keys. Somehow, I managed to make him fall off a building and die, only to be treated with a Game Over. I was shocked to the core, as a child I had now idea this is what I would get from a Spider-Man game. Turns out the black screen was a bug and it was fixed with a patch. But even when I did manage to play this game as it was meant to, there was still something that felt off. The training level is a couple of buildings in an dark, massive room that is empty and with almost oppressive atmosphere. As if it's a simulation, but a sinister one. The early CGI render of Spider-Man felt off, something I couldn't really place. Maybe the eyes are bigger, or the reflections are out of place. And some levels, especially the ones that take place in Oscorp, are really tough and the level design barely makes sense. A very oppressive atmosphere overall. Sorry for the big text, this was something I wanted to share for a long time and found the opportunity to do so.
Seeing you go through this not knowing anything about SM64 makes this an incredibly unique video. Aside from a lot of more obvious things, this hack uses beta assets to give a feeling of something off (to those familiar with the game) right off the bat. Plus peach's castle has a bright blue sky appearance in the final game, so already it establishes something's wrong to those in the know
It's a delightful kind of bizarre, seeing someone with no sm64 experience play this. I would suggest maybe going through the beginning portions of sm64 or looking up a basic movement tutorial? You're figuring things out pretty good as you go but there's all sorts of little things with the movement system, triple jump, backflips, crawling, you seemed to start to understand wall kicks so congratulations on getting that on your own! Also don't eschew the basic ability to Punch things, you'd be surprised what that can work on too.
While the regular mario 64 maps were always a little large compared to mario, this rom hack amplifies it to the extreme, a ton of these environments are uncannily big, they don't feel like they are made to contain humans, definitely giving that backrooms feeling you were talking about.
Can you hear the distant screams? I do. Please play more of this! You're the perfect person to play this romhack, there's a whole lot more to see and explore, not all of it so wholesome. So please give this rom another shot!
Super Mario 64, like Garry's Mod, has that unintentional eerieness. It just feels so empty and lonely, and I think horror content revolving around the game is interesting to me
Damn, haven't seen this hack in while. Gonna leave a few gameplay tips, spoiler free ofc: -The castle hub when you start the game, has separate versions of it, one of which leads to a nightmare sequence if you ground pound the floor. No matter where you are, even if a nightmare sequence is triggered you can use the pause menu button to escape, downside being if you are deep in the castle walls you'll have to find your way back from the start. -nightmare sequences can happen usually on corners of the castle, or on excepcionally long levels, some are fast and quick others are slow and subtle, there are no big jumpscares as far as I remember. -to win the game you have to find and press all of the cap switches, EXCEPT THE YELLOW ONE, those are the red, blue and green. After that, somehow find the actual final bowser world within the castle, which you'll need all caps to beat it, then fight bowser a final time. -i don't remember exactly how many, but each level I think had at least 3 separate versions of itself, each hub cycling throught them, you can tell on which version of the hub you are if the left most door changes from a 1 to a 3. -since you never played vanilla sm64, let's just say you'll notice when you come across objects and maps from the normal game, even if they may be missing some details -have fun! Great video man, hope you play more of the hack.
Really wish someone would make a fan continuation of this hack that would keep adding content to it until the rom can no longer take it. It'll feel really endless then.
As people have already mentioned, you were the perfect candidate to play this: experience with other "liminal" type content, have some idea of Super Mario 64 but never really played it. I think if you're going to do a second part of this, maybe you should try the original game after feeling done with the Rom hack (I say "feeling done" because the Hack doesn't have a concrete ending as far as I know).
B3313 is prime Librarian series material and I really hope you continue it! As someone who's played the original long ago, there's certainly something inherently more menacing to players who are familiar or have mastered the game, but I feel as though you're a prime example of someone who's quick to immerse into games, you've already got the vibe of the game itself- and are just as unsettled as anyone would be when running into the 'oddities' of the romhack
I'm kinda late for this one but I really love the idea of you exploring ROM Hacks of older games like you did here. Plus, the idea of you playing a ROM Hack of a game you heard about but never played really adds to the creepypasta factor. I know something like this probably is niche that not everyone is interested but it's honestly so cool. I'm interested to see you doing more of these on the future.
This plays like MyHouse.WAD, there's like 3 or 4 different versions of the castle, there's subcastles (the castle versions that are actually levels), but those subcastles also have levels, I feel like it's giant and the thought that you can switch to luigi and maybe have different interactions with the environment doesn't help that feeling. Maybe try to go to the foggy castle and go through the front door because you haven't done that
Yeah, but unlike MyHouse.WAD, this has no rhyme or reason to it. It's a constant fractal, meanwhile at least with MyHouse you knew _sort of_ what to expect. Same rooms just different in some aspect. With this, you don't know what to expect. More levels, more layers, no true point of origin. Just keep playing.
Three months ago i played this rom hack bcs i heard its pretty good, i explored for about 8 hours before stopping. The funny thing?, i didnt see like half of the things you did in this video, it actually feels personalized dude.
Mario -breaks into a mirror world -kicks civilians -shoots himself at a castle with a cannon -flies across the map with his arms -touches a mysterious floating artifact -floods the kingdom -doesnt elaborate -leaves
Wow, he actually delved into the seemingly infinite labrynth that is B3313, i hope you play more because oh boy you have only seen the surface of this game (also you got REALLY lucky for finding the trap lobby on your first entry to the castle)
I'm sure others have already said it, but this romhack is MASSIVE. One of the biggest things you'll be playing on the channel if you truly want to explore every nook and cranny. Having already watched a few playthroughs from different channels, I can say without a doubt that you haven't even scratched the surface of how expansive this romhack is, and seeing the game from your perspective is really interesting, so I'm excited to see more! Word of advice, though: Whatever you do, if you ever see a yellow switch on your explorations, absolutely do not press it.
That forest audio of birds chirping at the beginning of the game was used in a sound machine I used for most of my childhood to fall asleep, I recognized it immediately
something really amusing about this hack to me is that i feel it nails the bizarre and uneasy feeling of looking through scrapped beta content of a beloved game. even something really mundane like an unfinished map or scrapped music can feel so unsettling when it's an unseen part of a game so thoroughly searched from top to bottom, also knowing you likely won't get any answers for what bizarre things you might find that the developers chose to hide from the public
Yo, youre actually finally playing this! Awesome!! Oh and by the way, if you play this game at night in your time, the game will actually also play at night, and you may also find things have changed in the castle at night...you can see a ghost in the castle sometimes. The castle awaits you librarian.
I’m a couple days late to say this but, the idea of this rom hack is based on the idea of every copy of Mario 64 is personalized and as b3313 (build 3313) it is meant to a beta version or themed as one and has that personalization so as you play it seems to keep adding more stuff even though it doesn’t actually do it, it does a good job emulating it
The number on the doors isnt showing it being world 1 or 2 or whatever. In the original sm64 it tells you how many stars you need to unlock the door. B3313 has majority of the doors already unlocked with some exceptions so you can freely explore as much as you like. There is some you do need to unlock. Especially one door where you need at least 30 stars to unlock. But most of the doors in the romhack are already unlocked from the start
PLEASE play more dude. This hack has so much content that it's honestly a little discouraging when you realize you almost definitely can't experience it all. But there are still a ton of super cool things you haven't experienced so I really think another vid or two would be awesome!
Hey, just so you know, the final finished official Version 1.0 of this hack released just yesterday, made by the guy who was the actual original lead of the project.
It was cool to watch you play this. It's definitely meant to be experienced by those familiar with SM64, but your perspective as someone who isn't is interesting in its own way. The idea of B3313 is that it's a lost beta version of the game. It's different to SM64 in both subtle and obvious ways, from small changes like the textures of enemies and how Mario controls, to whole new castle rooms and levels. It builds on some of the ideas from the Super Mario 64 iceberg that got popular a few years ago and reinvigorated the idea of SM64 being creepy. It seems to also have been heavily influenced by SM64 analogue horror series, particularly Greenio's VHS series, which I highly recommend for more of the unnerving B3313 vibe (albeit with more overt themes). As you found out, there are hundreds of stars in this hack and many levels in an almost unnavigable castle, so completing it might not be your goal - but I know that there's still more for you to discover and experience, so I'd love this to become a series. It might be worth playing some SM64 to get an idea of the changes as well.
Dear Librarian. If you see a big yellow button/switch. Do not press it. Sincerely a "experienced" B3313 player. Also apparently the devs are working on a new version that'll be a finished build of the game and I'm so happy. I hope to see you check it out once it releases. B3313 has become one of my favorite horror games in recent times and the fact that it's a Super Mario 64 romhack makes it even more amazing.
This is prime Series material, there’s so much to find, so much to see, and so much to fear Also, if you ground pound (jump then press crouch button) into the sun carpet in the fake lobby (the darker one with the fake doors), you’ll be in for a surprise
i’ve played a whole bunch of this game (and regular mario 64 lol) and when you first entered the castle to reveal a single door, my immediate thoughts were all “OH NO!” because that’s actually a semi-rare event that is in no way pre-programmed! also, i have never ever in my whole life seen a person play mario 64 for the first time in modern times, and actually give the game a fair chance! like i’ve never seen anybody play for the first time and compliment the camera systems, and be impressed with things like the climbing poles and mario falling asleep, i’m so excited to watch the rest of the series!
seeing you gush about a game youve never played before really just makes me want you to play the original. like, not even for a video, just play the original mario 64 sometime and have fun exploring
hey librarian, my pet bunny passed away last night and i’m struggling but you always make me happy, and, i’m glad you’re finally playing this! it’s made so well
As a viewer, I was more on edge than anything. I’ve already seen full playthroughs of this game before, so when you reached certain parts, I was like, “Is it going to happen?” but also genuinely curious if you’d be able to connect the dots… Things just sort of happen here. Coming across them with no acknowledgement is most certainly the point. It’s haunting and the more you think about it, the more realized it becomes. This whole game feels like a tragedy to me. I wish I as the player could speak my mind and communicate to these things on my screen, but we are so far removed from the equation. An onlooker and little else. The more I see this game, I grow a dulling sense in my heart. It is like the slow erosion of water to stone, the growing of mold and bacteria where the surface of water, the brick wall containing it, and air all meet. It is soggy, still, and slowly festering- disgusting and wretched. Perhaps, if you look for long enough, you’ll see it under the bridge while outside the castle grounds. If it was real, I’d vomit at the sight of it. There’s a checklist of sites to see, but I’m unsure if there’s any reason to “beat” the game (besides checking it off) unless something’s been added that I’m unaware of. Also, Mario does have moves that might have helped in certain situations of the video. His versatility definitely set him apart from early 3D Platformers and may prove vital in various sections. Thought to at least let you be aware of them since the ROM isn’t the best place to learn these abilities. What you do with this knowledge is up to you - look into it or learn off the cuff. Been a long time silent viewer. Love this game, loved the 2020 SM64 personalization movement, and I hope to see more from you.
I think I'm a bit too old for this ROM, as I've never heard of it. Ha, but I was a young teenager when I got my Nintendo 64 when it came out, and I played Mario 64 non-stop! I know the game backwards and forwards, having attained every star and finding all the secrets. So watching you play this ROM brought back a lot of memories... as well as a lot of confusion! I wish I could have played this years ago, but it's cool seeing you go through it now! Thanks for playing it, and thanks for the video!
Itd be so great if you made this a series- this hack and everything it is is endlessly fascinating to me and, the comments are right, youre the ideal protag for it Love your channel Librarian!
Watching you play this and MyHouse.WAD was a trip because on one hand, it doesn't hit the same if you're not familiar with the game but on the other hand, you're like a kid, playing a haunted game for the first time and not knowing what's real and what's not it's really interesting
Your brand new perspective on this hack makes this such a fun watch. I’ve seen about 5 or 6 people play this game to completion, but I’m not even done watching and your video is one of the best B3313 playthroughs I’ve ever experienced
SO happy you're playing this one!! the fact that you've never played SM64 made this a very intriguing watch; hearing you speculate what is actually from the game vs what isn't. this is one of my favorite ROM hacks to watch people play because it's different every single time, and some of the rooms/areas you explored were ones I haven't seen before! please continue this if you enjoyed it - there's still so much more to see, and I genuinely get super excited whenever you cover a game I really like (Infra is another one!) because your reactions and commentary is so unique compared to other folks who play the same games. thanks for sharing your experience with this one, though! genuinely enjoyed it
Here's a few useful controls(based on the original N64 buttons because I don't know what you've bound them to): If you hold the Z button and press A, you'll do a high backflip. Press Z while in the air to slam downwards. While running, hold Z and press A to do a long jump. While running, quickly turn around and press A to jump backwards. Whe running, jump three times consecutively to do a high jump. Press A and B at the same time to do a kick.
You the secret castle variant on your first try, congratulations! That whole segment with Whomp's Fortress there was a reference to sm64.z64. Another Mario 64 Rom Hack.
Also, a few random tips incase you need them for future experiences with the game (if any): - By pressing L, you can play as Luigi instead of Mario or vise versa. - There's a bunch of different variants of the actual castle, some accessible through others. Try to find them all! - I'd recommend trying to play the original Mario 64 to get more of a feel for the controls, you may need that. B3313 is based off of the BETAs of Super Mario 64, and the whole iceberg made around the game.
I got this lobby on my first play too.. 😭 it's funny but.. It gets annoying when you're outside the castle, head in, and you have to pause & fast travel to the regular one.
Never in a million years would I of expected you to play b3313! I’m glad you are planning on playing it more in the future as you definitely haven’t even seen close to 10% of what it has to offer both in areas and mind trickery ;) anyways one little tip for you is that you DO NOT look up a map if you get lost as it’ll ruin a lot of the mystery. Instead you should make your own map of the game as you play through it! That’s of course if you feel like doing that though. Whatever floats your boat mr. librarian, have fun!
Ok, i have to ramble about the music for a bit (mostly because no one else is) Whoever is behind this hack did a really good job with messing with the original ost, just by listening to it i get the feeling that they took some of the main memorable themes (the main castle theme specifically) and just messed with certain elements in it. Like sometimes its a little faster or a little slower, sometimes the whole song is a key higher or a key lower, sometimes just a handful of notes are just out of tune, sometimes they just straight up play the same song in a completely different sound font (instead of sounding like a violin it sounds like a banjo type of stuff), sometimes they'll clearly take the idea of 1 song from the og soundtrack take a handful of motifs from it, and make an entirely different song out of it just to make it feel like you know what its supposed to be whilst also not remembering ever hearing anything like it. And sometimes its just an entirely new song aside from the soundfont. For those who want to know what the same song different sound font thing sounds like a good example is around the 1:00:00 to 1:04:58 mark. Its the same castle song thats been messed with in every other room, but now instead of orchestral violins its a pan flute esc instrument that's usually used in music in correlation to desert levels in games. I think they might of added a couple extra notes in between the main beats of the original and put it in a slightly higher key, but I'm 95% sure that its the same song. One i can garantee 100% for sure is a different sound font is at 1:07:55 Its playing the song that plays in bob-omb battlefield with the snow levels soundfont. And at 1:14:38 thats once again the main castle theme but with a soundfont of what sounds like a saloon piano. Ok, so after listening back to it the song at 1:00:00 to 1:04:58 is not the castle theme, but is actually the main menu theme in a desert panflute soundfont.
please please please please please make this a serie! b3313 is my fav rom hack, i loved when vinesauce Vinny and Joel played it, and I would love if you do too! please!
Wow, it's really surprising that you got the version of the castle with only one door on your first entry. There's only a 1 in 32 chance of that happening
If you decide to play this again, then I'd recommend getting the 1.0 version (It just came out). From what I've seen it has a ton of new content to explore
I'd go back to the sewers where they told you about making space for the sub, but this time no jumping down. You'll be surprised beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The N64 was my last serious console (and the first piece of electronic hardware I bought with my own money) so yeah, plenty of nostalgia here. But it's been so long since I played this game that the number of "wait, is that how it really was?" moments was off the charts.
Shame you missed out on Mario 64, definitely. I'm 37, and when I played Mario 64 for the first time on our brand new N64 it blew my mind. I had never played a 3D game before except for maybe a few really gnarly looking ones on a computer. It was like sensory overload realizing there was this whole world that could be explored in 3 dimensions. Dumb as it sounds in 2023, it felt downright futuristic playing N64 for the first time, kind of like playing VR for the first time.
having this be your first mario 64 experience makes the way you approach the game super interesting. your commentary is just delightful and i hope youll play more of this! but anyways this romhack is absolutely massive. no one has found everything about it yet honestly. theres about 400 discovered stars total (i think?).
YES!!!!! This is my favorite rom hack of all time and a huge hyperfixation of mine at the moment, so seeing one of my favorite content creators cover it is really exciting. Cannot wait to watch this!
Just finished the video. This was amazing!!! I think you experiencing the game entirely blind in terms of Super Mario 64 is genuinely interesting. Most playthroughs I've watched of B3313 are by people who are very familiar with Super Mario 64, whether they be speedrunner or just people who have played the game for several years, or people who know the beta content for this game like the back of their hand. Seeing you learn the mechanics and having a genuinely good time with the game was really fun, and watching the different parts of the game catch you offguard was entertaining, especially things that weren't even intended to be scary or offputting. I would love to see more parts of this. I'm unsure if you'd do a full series beating the game, as completely it normally takes a very long time, especially without a guide. But your commentary and perspective, as someone who had never played Super Mario 64, was very entertaining and a breath of fresh air.
i just love your inexperience, i think you're the guy "the doom prophet" mentioned in his b3313 streams, the guy who was playing the hack without ever playing the vanilla game well, i do love these kinds of gameplays so, keep on
Also hey, some info, b3313 is based of the many betas of sm64, like spaceworld 1995, b-roll, E3 1996, etc, b3313 is like the backrooms where its easy to get lost in the castles internal plexus and if you see him, do not trust him, do not research. (Anyways to continue the game is like a dream of a game you played, like how i have dreamed of Fnaf before knowing about it somehow, its familiar but not, its weird, its creepy, and its gonna need a muti part series just to complete it
Librarian playing this for the first time and being unable to make difference between what's in the original and what's in the ROM hack is so fascinating!
As someone who still has vivid memories playing this game, seeing this hack is so surreal. Everything is so familiar yet off. Outside the castel is almost 1 to 1 yet the inside only having one door for the first level, which is actually the second level, which in turn is missing small but very noticeable chunks of itself... well it gives me a feeling I cant really put into words.
Just found your channel, feels weird but refreshing to see someone who's unfamiliar but analyzes deeply an N64 game like you do, like the mention of how emulation were terrible back then, a LOT has changed over time, for the best ^^
This is a bit embarrassing to admit, but for me N64 games were basically the Source engine purveyors of creepiness in the 90s. I remember distinctly feeling really uncomfortable playing it alone at my grandma's house at night. Especially DKC and Banjo Kazooie. Even Kirby 64 and Smash Bros. felt pretty creepy. It's the same feeling I get looking at unpopulated maps in gmod.
Then he shows them the game only for it to revert back to what it's supposed to be
Absolutely
I agree
The Librarian becoming a Creepypasta protagonist is the most Librarian thing ever. 11/10 would recommend.
Just realized a perfect Creepypasta: _A game reviewer gets a cursed copy of a game._
Having this be your first experience with Mario 64 is like having someone's first TV show be Twin Peaks.
what's twin peaks?
A tv show
1:33:08 God, knowing what that piano does in the original game and seeing you just toy around with it in this romhack is really stress-inducing. It’s like watching a puppy play with a jaguar while the Jaguar just tolerates it.
What does it do... please tell me its just a regular piano
@@crazynachos4230 In the main game, the folding top part has sharp teeth, and it chomps repeatedly as it approaches you
christ that goddamn piano was traumatizing
I just _knew_ that the game was going to do something there, I know what that piano normally does through cultural osmosis, and the game... did nothing. It managed to completely subvert my expectations, and I am *here* for it.
Not the fucking piano bro, that shit gave me PTSD growing up
It’s deeply fascinating seeing someone who has no familiarity with Mario 64’s weirdness play this.
_more places._
Imagine that there stands a single door before you, and behind that door stands three more, and behind each of those doors is four more, and along the way, you'll come out of a door some dozens of doors later and find yourself standing before a single door again.
_ distorted_ and _uncanny._
The music is never right. The shading isn't right. The HUD is wrong, and it keeps... _changing_ between levels. The enemies don't look the same, and Mario sounds like someone else. His moveset is all wrong, and the physics don't work the same. Luigi isn't supposed to be here, and... there was never a _painting of Peach there before._
A shadow stalks the endless halls. You're still trapped inside your own walls. The Toads peer back with blank faces.
_It hurts. I'm not having fun. Turn it off._
Can you hear the Princess calling?
...
...Didja like my dramatic prose?
Anyways, I was a little leery when I heard you hadn't ever played SM64 before, but I think the nauseous levels of confusion really added to the experience! It played very well into the kind of phenomenon you're always talking about, where the childhood memories you have of something just... _aren't right,_ and when you try to recreate them, everything just feels _wrong_ and _uncanny._ In trying to imagine what it was _supposed_ to be like without _knowing,_ I think the feeling came down on you _twofold!_
This hack _really_ isn't for beginners, but you provided a truly unique outlook in playing it as one, so I'd be very interested in seeing more! I'm a _huge_ fan of B3313, myself, and it was a special kind of _freeing_ to watch you bumble about, _stars in your eyes,_ chasing whichever door seemed most interesting. My only experience with this hack has been _mapping_ it, which, by the way, is _horrendously tedious!_
In the outdated version I gave up on mapping, the one you're playing, the map I made had over a _thousand_ data points of entrances, exits, and potential courses-and I wasn't even _close_ to done. With the dozens of hours I devoted to it, there were still a _bunch_ of areas I watched you go to that I'd just never _seen_ before. It's even worse in the Unabandoned version, which has... I believe somewhere above _400_ stars in it.
There are rooms upon endless rooms, some of them loop into identical rooms which are actually _different,_ and as you get more stars, I've heard that some entrances actually just _change._
If you haven't picked it up, yet, the hack is largely predicated around the phenomenon of liminal spaces, and it strives to present every individual room as _disconnected, jarring,_ and _slightly eerie._ I genuinely think that, if you were to devote the _Librarian treatment_ to each and every room, isolating it and examining it as a sole entity, you'd probably never run out of content. There's just... _so much castle_ to explore, and it's all _super janky._
Not that there aren't _other_ draws, as well.
Forever.
Damn this is by far the best, well written comment i've ever read!
you forgot to put italics in your comment
just make a video essay dude
I did play sm64 ALOT of times
this felt like a fanfiction to read
Right off the bat, your point about that era of games being kind of creepier than they intended to be, SMB64 was actually one of the first games that gave me legitimate anxiety because the underwater levels terrified me. And they still kind of do to this day. And I was like 16 at the time when it came out.
But the feeling of disorientation and the limited controls and general new, unrefined approach towards 3d polygon rendering really made that stuff tense.
Bro how the water music is so chill in this game
Mario violently drowns if you mess up. @@macaroni745
Librarian, PLEASE do more of this. You're literally the perfect person to play this
Agreed
agreed, super enjoyable to watch. hoping the comments dont spoil too much of b3313 for him
I agree too, but I also think he should maybe play a small amount of regular Mario 64 before the next episode, for comparison purposes and to learn some of the basic mechanics; OR, if he wants to protect the entirely blank slate he's coming to this with and thus the unique viewpoint and experience he's having, just talk to someone who knows how the game works (literally just so he can learn, like, long jumps and how to kill ghosts to access the items inside really, stuff that lets him access more of the game rather than "spoiling" anything)
@@Pixelcraftianhi pixelcraftian, didn't expect you to be here
@@Pixelcraftian you watch librarian too?
Honestly you're the sort of creator who fits perfectly with this mod, i'm glad you're getting to play it, it's insanely expansive.
It's so crazy you managed to get one of the creepy levels FIRST TRY. It took me several minutes to get to that version of the castle! 😭😭😭
Chris playing Super Mario 64 in and of itself is quite cursed on its own.
I could not agree with this more. DOOM 64 is one of my favorite games of aall time, so I'd love to see Librarian play it.
SAME
I remember playing the 2002 Spider-Man game, based on the Sam Raimi movie, having a creepy atmosphere that probably wasn't intended.
So glad I'm not the only one who found the Tutorial stage a bit eerie.
librarian hating toads is actually the funniest thing to me right now
Seeing you go through this not knowing anything about SM64 makes this an incredibly unique video.
Can you hear the distant screams?
_they're here_
You not realizing how/how many things are off about this game compared to the original makes this quite a unique experience.
Super Mario 64, like Garry's Mod, has that unintentional eerieness. It just feels so empty and lonely, and I think horror content revolving around the game is interesting to me
I think it’d be a lot of fun to see you play some of normal Mario 64 after having this be so fresh in your memory
Damn, haven't seen this hack in while.
Gonna leave a few gameplay tips, spoiler free ofc:
-The castle hub when you start the game, has separate versions of it, one of which leads to a nightmare sequence if you ground pound the floor.
-since you never played vanilla sm64, let's just say you'll notice when you come across objects and maps from the normal game, even if they may be missing some details
-have fun!
Great video man, hope you play more of the hack.
Nah man a 90 minute video is too short. You need like 4 more hours to finish this whole ROM
I’ve dug at least seven into this nightmare and am still finding stuff.
Really wish someone would make a fan continuation of this hack that would keep adding content to it until the rom can no longer take it. It'll feel really endless then.
4 hours?! I've been at this hack for over 30 lmao
@@4zy1there is, though some of the routes are changed and crashes and star IDs are fixed. Would you like me to provide a link?
Ive been playing for 300 hours and still havent got as many stars...
This mod is the definition of "fever dream"
I would love for you to continue to explore these hallways and labyrinth-esque castle if you would like.
Three months ago i played this rom hack bcs i heard its pretty good, i explored for about 8 hours before stopping.
The funny thing?, i didnt see like half of the things you did in this video, it actually feels personalized dude.
Mario
-breaks into a mirror world
-kicks civilians
-shoots himself at a castle with a cannon
-flies across the map with his arms
-touches a mysterious floating artifact
-floods the kingdom
-doesnt elaborate
-leaves
OK I WAS JUST SEARCHING B3313 UP AND HERE'S A LIBRARIAN VIDEO EVERY COPY TRULY IS PERSONALIZED
I second this. Hopefully he sees this comment because the last thing he needs is yellow switch shenanigans on top of everything else.
I love how the librarian see’s a timer and his first thought is “hmm I wonder if I have an idle animation”
I’m a couple days late to say this but, the idea of this rom hack is based on the idea of every copy of Mario 64 is personalized and as b3313 (build 3313) it is meant to a beta version or themed as one and has that personalization so as you play it seems to keep adding more stuff even though it doesn’t actually do it, it does a good job emulating it
21:28 Librarian dropping the hardest, rawest line out of nowhere
The number on the doors isnt showing it being world 1 or 2 or whatever. In the original sm64 it tells you how many stars you need to unlock the door. B3313 has majority of the doors already unlocked with some exceptions so you can freely explore as much as you like. There is some you do need to unlock. Especially one door where you need at least 30 stars to unlock. But most of the doors in the romhack are already unlocked from the start
Now it kind of makes me want to see you try a run of base SM64 for comparison. Plus a blind playthrough of SM64 is always fun to watch.
I've always thought this hack would fit the themes of your channel, super excited that you're finally covering it!
This is prime Series material, there’s so much to find, so much to see, and so much to fear
Also, if you ground pound (jump then press crouch button) into the sun carpet in the fake lobby (the darker one with the fake doors), you’ll be in for a surprise
i’ve played a whole bunch of this game (and regular mario 64 lol) and when you first entered the castle to reveal a single door, my immediate thoughts were all “OH NO!” because that’s actually a semi-rare event that is in no way pre-programmed!
also, i have never ever in my whole life seen a person play mario 64 for the first time in modern times, and actually give the game a fair chance! like i’ve never seen anybody play for the first time and compliment the camera systems, and be impressed with things like the climbing poles and mario falling asleep, i’m so excited to watch the rest of the series!
ever since i knew about b3313, ive always wanted librarian to play it!!
super excited that you're covering it
seeing you gush about a game youve never played before really just makes me want you to play the original. like, not even for a video, just play the original mario 64 sometime and have fun exploring
Same
hey librarian, my pet bunny passed away last night and i’m struggling but you always make me happy, and, i’m glad you’re finally playing this! it’s made so well
Oh my goodness yes!!! I have always wanted to see you play this. This is one of my favourite Mario 64 hack.
You're never too old to play video games! Give this romhack a go!
Itd be so great if you made this a series- this hack and everything it is is endlessly fascinating to me and, the comments are right, youre the ideal protag for it
Love your channel Librarian!
I love how he’s impressed by such small things like the camera. Not saying that’s bad. It’s just amusing as a person who plays a lot of platformers
Librarian defeating Bowser the improper way has me both furious yet entertained at the same time.
Watching you play this and MyHouse.WAD was a trip because
on one hand, it doesn't hit the same if you're not familiar with the game
but on the other hand, you're like a kid, playing a haunted game for the first time and not knowing what's real and what's not
it's really interesting
This game is how it felt to play super Mario 64 in my dreams when I was a kid
Your brand new perspective on this hack makes this such a fun watch. I’ve seen about 5 or 6 people play this game to completion, but I’m not even done watching and your video is one of the best B3313 playthroughs I’ve ever experienced
wow, I've never been this early for a librarian video!
SO happy you're playing this one!! the fact that you've never played SM64 made this a very intriguing watch; hearing you speculate what is actually from the game vs what isn't. this is one of my favorite ROM hacks to watch people play because it's different every single time, and some of the rooms/areas you explored were ones I haven't seen before! please continue this if you enjoyed it - there's still so much more to see, and I genuinely get super excited whenever you cover a game I really like (Infra is another one!) because your reactions and commentary is so unique compared to other folks who play the same games. thanks for sharing your experience with this one, though! genuinely enjoyed it
I adore this romhack. Would love to see you cover more of it, I've got about 15 hours in it and im still coming across new stuff
this mod is such a good depiction of what its like to dream about sm64
it's incredibly funny seeing the librarian jsut have no familiarity with the usual workings of mario 64
Here's a few useful controls(based on the original N64 buttons because I don't know what you've bound them to):
If you hold the Z button and press A, you'll do a high backflip.
Press Z while in the air to slam downwards.
While running, hold Z and press A to do a long jump.
While running, quickly turn around and press A to jump backwards.
Whe running, jump three times consecutively to do a high jump.
Press A and B at the same time to do a kick.
47:51 "Oh look, it's two boos kissing" And now, I cannot see those clouds in any other way lol
You the secret castle variant on your first try, congratulations!
That whole segment with Whomp's Fortress there was a reference to sm64.z64. Another Mario 64 Rom Hack.
Also, a few random tips incase you need them for future experiences with the game (if any):
- By pressing L, you can play as Luigi instead of Mario or vise versa.
What time did he find the secret castle?@@2torial_
Whatever floats your boat mr. librarian, have fun!
i would actually watch a whole playthrough of super mario 64 from you^^
Ok, i have to ramble about the music for a bit (mostly because no one else is)
Whoever is behind this hack did a really good job with messing with the original ost, just by listening to it i get the feeling that they took some of the main memorable themes (the main castle theme specifically) and just messed with certain elements in it.
One i can garantee 100% for sure is a different sound font is at 1:07:55
Its playing the song that plays in bob-omb battlefield with the snow levels soundfont.
This was incredible. I love your perspective, very fresh. Great stuff.
I'd go back to the sewers where they told you about making space for the sub, but this time no jumping down.
You'll be surprised beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Wow the odds of you entering the version of the castle that trapped you in was super slim. What an intro to this rom hack
So excited to watch this! I was very into this hack for a little bit, even tried to make a map of the castle. Key word “tried,” lmao
having this be your first mario 64 experience makes the way you approach the game super interesting. your commentary is just delightful and i hope youll play more of this! but anyways this romhack is absolutely massive. no one has found everything about it yet honestly. theres about 400 discovered stars total (i think?).
Iconic Librarian showing he has the gaming skills of a House Mom you invite to play MK.
It’s really interesting watching you try to make sense of a game that progressively makes sense & becomes more dream like the longer you play
But your commentary and perspective, as someone who had never played Super Mario 64, was very entertaining and a breath of fresh air.
i just love your inexperience, i think you're the guy "the doom prophet" mentioned in his b3313 streams, the guy who was playing the hack without ever playing the vanilla game
well, i do love these kinds of gameplays so, keep on
This is the most immersive video on this hack I have ever seen, please do more!
The fact that he got the “better off” level right away is pretty crazy.
I'd love to see you play the original game now. Especially the original ghost house level!
This is what Mario felt like in my head as a kid lmao.
As a bit music nerd I love how the file select is in minor key instead of major key.
it's so cool to see you play this, it fits so well with all the stuff you make
Just found your channel, feels weird but refreshing to see someone who's unfamiliar but analyzes deeply an N64 game like you do, like the mention of how emulation were terrible back then, a LOT has changed over time, for the best ^^
