  • Conrail, Amtrak, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and W&LE. There are a few scanner transmissions, too. Locations include Elyria, Galion, Sterling, Amherst, Lorain, Greenwich, New London, Nova, Sullivan, Lodi, Spencer, and Warwick. You can skip to the various segments using the links below.
    Filmed with a Panasonic OmniMovie VHS Camcorder. My "scanner" back then was a Yaesu FT-23R.
    Thanks for watching!
    ~Zeke
    00:00 Elyria, Ohio - CP 207 - March 1, 1992. Conrail & CSX diamond - 2 westbound Conrails
    02:39 Galion, Ohio - March 8, 1992. CCC&StL Depot & CP 80 (formerly Burt Tower). Conrail Mail-4 with 3 SD50s and PICO use the Columbus Line.
    08:19 Sterling, Ohio - March 22, 1992. Former RU tower where the Erie Lackawanna once crossed the B&O. Caught 4 trains here. The first one appears to be R138.
    14:06 Amherst, Ohio - April 11, 1992. Conrail TOPI and Amtrak # 49 (F40 311 leading). At Fairlane Yard eastbound Conrail TV-10 does a short horn exchange with the train switching the yard. Fairlane Yard (named after the vehicle that used to be built here) handled the Ford plant traffic at the Lorain Assembly plant, which closed in 2005.
    19:36 Lorain, Ohio - April 11, 1992. Grab shot of an eastbound NS at Leavitt Rd. on the Cleveland District (ex-NKP) and then some footage at the RU drawbridge. L37 I believe was the Bellevue-Cleveland local. A pretty awesome sounding Southern P5 horn is on NS 4021.
    22:16 Greenwich, Ohio - April 12, 1992. Conrail and CSX action at the former Boyd diamond and at the former GN Tower. A windy day.
    34:34 New London, Ohio - April 12, 1992. Some shots around the now gone W&LE yard (ex-AC&Y) and Lake Erie Rail Car - the shiny red engine was their switcher. This was just 2 years or so after NS sold the AC&Y to the Wheeling & Lake Erie.
    35:18 Nova, Ohio - April 12, 1992. Former VN tower. Eastbound CSX 6773.
    37:19 Sullivan, Ohio - April 19, 1992. CSX eastbound TOFC & a westbound CSX 7625 meet. This was Easter Sunday.
    40:10 Lodi, Ohio - April 19, 1992. W&LE GP35s from Brewster headed to New London. It seemed like for a while W&LE had this routine on Sundays where they repositioned power between the two locations. The CSX WEPX train comes through with CNW power leading. I followed the light power to Spencer and then to New London.
    41:13 Spencer, Ohio - April 19, 1992. Same W&LE light power now is westbound on the AC&Y. Then I paced it for a bit on Route 162.
    42:30 New London, Ohio - April 19, 1992. The light power now crosses the Conrail diamond and heads to the AC&Y yard for parking. The diamond was just an automatic interlocking - controlled by the Indy Line DS. This diamond was once called Hiles (NYC tower) and is gone today, as are the AC&Y tracks between here and Greenwich. The W&LE uses the CSX to Greenwich where it rejoins the AC&Y at GN. There is a vehicle overpass here as well that helps make this area nearly unrecognizable today.
    45:06 Warwick, Ohio - April 26, 1992 - Former Pennsy tower and closed at this time. The first train approaches but it started raining. 2 more CSX trains come through on the former B&O.
    48:37 Sterling, Ohio - April 26, 1992 - eastbound CSX
    49:31 Greenwich, Ohio (Boyd) - May 3, 1992 - Another windy day. 2 westbound CSX, The SCL unit (CSX 6359) has an awesome RS5T.
    52:10 New London, Ohio - May 3, 1992 - W&LE 2701 light power tones up the Conrail Indy Line DS to cross the diamond. They never had to wait for anyone. An eastbound Conrail coal train led by CR 6064 wraps up the day.
    56:50 Lorain, Ohio (RU) - May 9, 1992 - 4 NS trains.
    1:03:26 Lagrange, Ohio (Route 303) - May 10, 1992. Grab shot of an eastbound Conrail coal train led by CR 6075.
    1:03:39 Elyria, Ohio (CP 207) - May 15, 1992 - 2 westbound Conrails. The first WB is towing 3 ATSF C40-8Ws fresh from the Erie factory. MYTO (Motor Yard - Toledo) primarily handled the traffic from the Ford stamping plant that used to be in Walton Hills, which closed in 2014.

    Seems like a shorter time ago than it actually was. What was once standard fare (cars, locomotives, etc...) is now pretty remarkable. Lots of GP30s that weren't slugs still towing the line, and Chessie System yellow abound. It's a great video.

      That's a Southern old cast P5, but only 2 or 3 bells are working.

    • @wmuzeke
      @wmuzeke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely from wear and tear. Assuming it's the original horn from 1964, that's a lot of years worth of tunnels, smoke, coal dust, pollen, and rain for it to endure.

    • @wmuzeke
      @wmuzeke  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is but is now # 109 and was rebuilt about 15 years ago with a low hood. It still has the Alco trucks. You can find some recent videos of it here on YT. It has a K5LA horn.

    • @wmuzeke
      @wmuzeke  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't live in that part of the country anymore, but I looked online and in 2016 it had a new cast P5. Seems like it was renumbered to # 2095, which sounds like it has a mixed cast P5.

      Don't know about 265. I'll see about the I&O since I don't have that much footage of it. It probably will be mixed in with a regional video like this one.

    I wonder what year was when all US railroads started to install ditch lights on all their locomotives was it 1992 or 1993?

    • @wmuzeke
      @wmuzeke  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      They were mandated by the FRA by the end of 1997, but started appearing on locomotives (particularly the new orders) towards the end of 1992. Some railroads like BN & CR used ditch strobe lights a little earlier than that.
