Hi there Elliot I just finished watching 2nd season of Anime Re: Zero. I can't describe this anime and compliment it enough. I'm 100% sure you'll love it. First season has director's cut with 1 hour long episodes, the first 10 episodes are slow, but if you get past them this show is an absolute gem, especially 2nd season. I would love to hear a review from you! P.S second season is split into 2 halves, second half in Jan 2021. I know you don't review animes, but you liked FMA and this gives similar vibes!
I always say to everyone I recommend this to, PLSSS don’t judge the series based on the first book cause it does NOT do it justice! This’s the most criminally underrated series that’s out there. The series just gets better and better with each book, it’s incredible. I’m currently rereading the series for the third time in prep for book 6. The king of Attolia (book 3) is my absolute favourite cause it’s Gen centric. Followed by the queen of Attolia (book 2). Enjoy!
This is pretty much exactly how I feel about this series! The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia are two of my all time favorite books. There are just so many little things that are great every time you notice them, even if you remember them from the last read.
I love how the series tests you beforehand 😆like you gotta go through the bit of boredom first before having the time of your life and enjoying the entire series
LOL yeah. I feel like Lord of the Rings is in a similar category of lore and atmosphere heavy stories where, if you enjoy the world that you're being given, then you're going to love reading it. If not, then it's more of a struggle to get through. Just my two cents. It did take two tries, but I learned to love The Thief in the end!!
I loved how she incorporated the importance of politics and economics to their mission, it’s not just some adventure or some journey where the stakes are unrealistically high (like saving the world, etc). I loved the history of Hamiathe’s gift and what went down in the generations who held it.
The Queen's Thief series is absolutely beautiful. I'm rereading the series and it's even more amazing the second time. Megan's writing is beautiful and I love that it's filled with quick-witted characters and political intrigue.
It is even better on reread! He tells you what’s going to happen so early on but because he is an unreliable narrator do you don’t realize it first read. Also, I loved books 2, 3 and 4 even more! The last book in the series (number 6) is coming out mid October.
I've read this series twice now and it is a world that I want to keep revisiting. The first time I read it, it took me a long time to get through Queen of Attolia and Thick As Theives, but once I got to Return of the Thief, I read that in 3 days. It was SO good! Rereading it, you pick up on how subtle Turner's writing is. Some details are blink and you miss it and it all comes together so beautifully. I really hope more people read this series and I want to find other books similar to it if anyone has any recs.
I’ve reread this series so many times and just discovered the last two had been written, so I’ll be binging them very soon! I’m so happy new people are discovering this series 😭💕
I just went through all The titles of your videos because I was hoping you had reviewed the next book, The Queen of Attolia. Didn't find it... But oh damn, YOU SHOULD READ IT. I liked the thief but I *loved* the Queen of Attolia. And the series overall just grows and gets very incredible in terms of its whole ambition. But really. Queen of Attolia. So good. Don't read any spoilers. Even avoid the book jacket description if you can. If you think this one was light on plot, the next one is like "Okay, hope you were paying attention because we are going full plot, full time. Meta plotting and actual conspiracy plotting. Buckle up."
I love this series! Finally reading book 6 right now and it is amazing. Each one really does get more and more engaging, and Gen is always the best character.
Well I completely agreed with everything you said. I couldn’t have articulated all of that, but I’m glad you did. I’m honestly thrilled that you are discovering this series, it is an absolute delight. I feel, that if you liked the first book even a little bit, you’ll absolutely adore the rest of the series. I can’t wait to read the final book once I’ve finished rereading the series. I’ve been reading it for yeeeeeeeears and the final book is out this week. Happy dance.
Completely agree. The first book is basically Greek Aladdin, except he’s also kind of (most definitely) a troll. The series really hits its stride in the second book, but Gen is the heart of the whole thing, so it makes sense that the first book spends so much time introducing us to him and the world. I think most fans agree that the first book is the least exciting, though.
My sisters were reading this series long before I was. I one of them started when there was only two books out. They said I had to read it too. I waited until there were 5 books. The Thief definitely wasn't my favorite, but the more time I spend away from it the more I like it. My mom, sisters, and I are all rereading the series before the new book comes out this month. Oh and by the way, for some reason the new cover doesn't have it, but The Thief is a Newbery Honor book.
I'm so happy you read this book! I recently read all 5 books that are out and I LOVE this series! Can't wait for you to read the sequels and I'll be eagerly waiting for your reviews of them.
I’m rereading the series, I’m on The Queen of Attolia right now. This is one of my all time favorite series, because the characters are so clever, and the endings are amazing. The first book is the slowest. ♥️🍂
@@watchcrap1 I just finished rereading the queen of attolia 2 minutes ago. Rereading this series is so amazing because you’re seeing all the events with the knowledge of where the series and characters go. I just love it.
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s my favourite series and the last book comes out next week. Totally agree with everything you said it’s very slow paced in the middle but I loved Gen and the ending and the second book is possibly my favourite ever. It’s a lot faster paced and has amazing twists. Definitely agree on the audiobooks I’ll have to check out Steve West’s other works.
I made it to the end and was then blown away by how interesting it got! Already downloaded Queen of Attoila with high expectations on the story coming together.
I highly recommend getting through the first book. It is a bit boring. I enjoyed it, but also the first time I was reading it, I was a kid in a car and only continued because it was the only book I’d brought with me. The series becomes so much more interesting, the ending of the first book is a little bit of an indication of what to expect from the rest of the series.
I do think that first person narration is trickier and harder to pull off well than third person. Done well, it can be brilliant, but it imposes some limitations that can bring out the best in a great writer. Sounds like a quirky, fun read - thank you!
ROMAN-INSPIRED?! The scene you described when forcing a rest is hilarious. This book sounds really good, actually! Christina loves your hand and arm motions in this video re: "walking and talking..." toward the end.
So glad you read this! This is one of my all time favorite series and I cannot get enough of these characters! I agree it's probably kinda boring, but I just chalk then up to politics (which I love) and Gen being sneaky XD
This series is my absolute favorite of all time and I am al glad you did a book review on it! The series does get better as you go, with the third one being my favorite. I usually re-read this series once or twice a year and it never ceases to astound me how the author very carefully sets each book up for the coming novels without you realizing it. But as you read through it again you can pick up on her subtle writing and be like "oh!!! They're talking about this! Or this explains this from another book!" It amazing! Great review. Totally agree with it all.
I don't know what made me pick up this book eventually, maybe the raving reviews and the fact it isn't that wellknown. Like you said, it didn't really sound like something I would like but I ended up loving it so much and each following book is better than the one before ... ALTHOUGH it goes in a very different direction that you may expect. Turner's writing style is also a bit different from what I'm used to but she does remind me a bit off Robert Jackson Bennett in that they both give it you straight :D Anyway love the book, everybody who hasn't tried it should definitly try it. I'm pretty sure the first book is pretty inexpensive.
This is definitely one of my all time favorite series! I first read it over a decade ago and I still think about it on the regular. Book 2 is my favorite and I’m so excited for the new one coming out!
I've read the first two books. I really liked the first one, and then the second one tore my heart out. So, so good. I really need to get back to reading the rest of the series.
It makes me so happy you enjoyed this book! It’s a series I recommend to everyone but completely understand why it just isn’t some people’s thing. I’m super interested to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series, should you choose to continue! :)
I’m so happy that you liked it! I agree with everything you said. This series is now one of my absolute favorites. It gets even better as it goes on and the plot really picks up, but the first book is basically a slow travel story. I love Gen SO much! He is such an infuriating delight of a character. And the author’s subtle character insights and embedded storytelling make for such a unique writing style. I have never been as excited for a book release as I am for the final book that comes out next week! :)
Thanks for this. I actually got this book several weeks ago when it was on sale, but I've been putting off reading it. It actually sounds like a perfect book for me right now. I just got done reading the 5th book in the Red Rising series, so I could definitely use something with a bit of a slower pace to help unwind from the non-stop action & suspense of Dark Age.
I think I understand what you mean when you say that when a book is in first person it can feel like you don’t get to know the main character as well. I think from a realistic standpoint this is pretty good writing in most cases. Because really, how many of us are truly and deeply honest with ourselves about ourselves and analyze our thoughts and feelings all the time? We get those ‘aha!’ and ‘holy crap!’ moments that we then analyze to death, but we rarely spend all our time doing it. So a third person POV has the benefit of an omniscient narrator feeding us tidbits, but in a first person POV, we’re only gonna get those when the character has those ‘aha!’ moments. ☺️
im excited to hear what you think of the rest of the series! i accidentally read the second book first and lets just say, i was shocked. but this series is by far my favorite ever, and i so wish more people would read it. i don't think i would want it to be made into movies, maybe a tv show. theres just so many fine details that would be lost in a film.
Gen is an absolute delight, maybe not in this book (even though he's still fun to follow), but after reading books 2 and 3 he definitely jumped into my top 5 favorite fictional characters list :)
I think you mix up "boring" and not a lot happens lol. Boring would mean it wasn't keeping your interest, but if not a lot happens, but character beats and the writing is good then it wouldn't be boring. I've read plenty of books where the filler doesn't progress the plot, but it progresses character motivation and that, in itself isn't boring. This sounds like a book that's a lot of fun, I'll defs add it to my TBR!
I love this series so much! The final book is coming out Tuesday Oct. 6th so great time to start reading it. I can't wait! I am just completing a reread with a friend of mine which we're been doing on audiobooks. Gen is one of my favorite fantasy characters of all time. The first book is good, but the second book Queen of Attolia is where the story really gets going and you really have to at least read the first two to decide if you like the series or not. The first book is about setting up the characters, particularly Gen, before you get into a ton of political intrigue, war, rebellions, invasions, and prophecies of doom. MWT is a master of tricking her readers and writing various pov's. First you get to know Gen, then you get to know how everyone else sees Gen.
I just got SO EXCITED when I saw this video. The Thief is so great and the whole series is just !!!! The third book, The King of Attolia is truly one of my favorite books of all time because the character work is just perfection, Gen is just one of the best characters I've ever read. (It's also crazy that I love the third book so much bc there's a narrator shift which I typically HATE but I've never seen one done so well before in a series) I def get the "boring" comment though, MWT def likes her character studies and world-building and then a giant burst of action towards the end. Also, I think some people might feel like this book seems familiar is some way and it's because the book is 20+ years old and sooo many books written since have been influenced by The Thief.
I just finished listening to it this week! I loved it, so much. One of my favorite books this year. Though I honestly don’t think I would have loved it so much, because of the pacing, if I hadn’t listened to the audio. (Steve West also narrated The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater so it was funny for him to narrate a character who hates horses 😂)
I feel like this book is only boring on the first read. When you reread it, you now see all of the stuff that actually IS going on. This is my favorite series of all time, and each book just gets better and better each time you reread it.
I actually liked Older version audiobook narrated by Jeff Woodman, he was the original narrator up to book 4. since it reads like the children's book as it was intended to be, also i find he express Gen's really well as he is quite young in the first three books,. But i did enjoy the new narrator for the final book as it aptly matured with the characters
AHH! i love this book/series. do you/anyone have any recommendations for similar books or series? similar in style, characters, setting, etc. i feel MWT's writing is very unique, but i'm hoping there is at least one other author with a similar style.
If you want another series about a brilliant thief, a friendship as strong as Immakuk and Ennikar, and an author who tricks his readers, I recommend Scott Lynch's Locke Lamora series. I've only read the first one so far, and be warned that the series is adult not YA and can get pretty violent, but Locke reminds me a lot of Gen and a lot of Booktubers love the series.
The Lies of Locke Lamora is def a good choice with a sort of similar characters and setting (it will hurt you even worse than The Queen of Attolia, fair warning. It is fantastic though.). For YA fantasy, I always think of The Demon King by Cinda Willaims Chima as something in a similar vein. The Demon King is much more high fantasy with wizards and such, but also features a rogue thief MC and political intrigue and royal courts and such. The Demon King and The Thief are my personal all-time favorite YA fantasy series, so def recommend!
I think I also like boring books most of the time. They don't seem boring to me, of course, until I start talking to people about them, and I'm like yeah... that does sound dull 😂 P. S. love your hair
I liked it because of Gen, I agree nothing happened but I wasn’t bored. The second and the third was the same, but sadly I was bored in the third one so I won’t continue with the series. Gen is the only saving grace.
Have you read any of the other books in the series in the last couple of years? I don't remember seeing anything on your channel for any of the other books yet.
Honestly the entire series is such that nothing...really...happens?? I mean things are always happening around you but never within the readers viewpoint if that makes any sense. BUT ITS STILL SO GOOD. Its actually quite interesting as we don’t really experience everything as it unfolds but we are given just enough information to get from one point to another...
Okay but the guy she described who thought he knew the old folktale best and was all snooty, literally reminds me of someone I know...like it sounds exactly like him😂
I agree with the "it's boring" part😂. Usually, when people say about a book that nothing happens in it I disagree (Farseer or The Starless Sea). I'm like "I think there happens alot, you just didn't pay attention"😅 but in this case it's actually true. Love it nonetheless or even more so, since it's just a very relaxing read🧡
@@ebnovels I can't wait to hear your thought about this series because it gets better and better in every books, The final book is being released today.
I'm not saying I hated Gen.. but he was definitely the most annoying character I've ever experienced 🤣 once the book picked up i found him much more tolerable since his whining was no longer the main focus.
I read this last year and quite enjoyed it. Then I read The Queen of Attolia and it is one of my most hated books. It put me in a slump, I took a whole month to read it and I don't understand why people love it. It makes no sense, it's boring, and the "romance" is not romantic or cute, but nonsensical. I'm curious, does something interesting happen in the sequels ? Why do people love this ?
Funny that you say you like boring books because I realized yesterday that I do too. I’m reading To Sleep in a Sea of Stars RN and I kinda hate the action scenes in the moments where we are discovering amazing lore information about aliens and I wish we just could’ve, you know, focus only on that and not about action sequences...
Was it just me or was Sophos’s book really hard to get into. I was lost so many times during the read. It was a good book, but I was just very confused for half of it
This series is the most boring book I have ever read, hence this is one of my favorite series of all time. There is something about Megan's writing style that I adore so much.
Can someone explain to me why somebody would be impressed by the stealing abilities of a thief who got caught and arrested for thievery? Doesn't sound like a good thief to me.
Ok . . . Can someone please explain this to me - HATED this series!! (To be fair I didn’t finish it I stopped after the 3rd book) My friend recommended the first book and I thought it was mediocre at best. It’s the exact same book as the False Prince and in my opinion the False prince is far superior. The entire book is tell don’t show. There’s literally an entire action sequence that is cut out and then told to Gen - why not just SHOW that sequence?? I didn’t find Gen to be clever at all. The twist at the end was so predictable (to be fair it’s the same twist as the False Prince so I saw it coming from a mile away). The world building isn’t worldbuilding - the author just takes Greek Mythology and changes the names - slightly. I kept reading the series because my friend convinced me that the next books were different than the False Prince and the are. However I hated them even more. I didn’t find any of the twists to be clever or well foreshadowed. The characters are ridiculous and irritating. There’s actually a scene where Gen tries to force himself on a woman who he has captured! He then married that woman (spoiler) even though she has done horrific things to him and is by all accounts a terrible person, because he thinks she’s hot. The third book is narrated by a completely bee character and I had to skim it - I could barely get through it. Please someone explain why anyone would like this book! I honestly want to know what I seem to be missing here.
Elliot Brooks no I don’t think so. But I’ve heard so many people like it - I just want to understand why. I feel like all of the things you are told not to do in writing class is done in this book. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. My best friend loves this series.

I thought this was such a surprise when I read this. I enjoyed the whole reading experience. Glad to hear you praise a lot of the things I did.
Gen is an absolute delight, maybe not in this book (even though he's still fun to follow), but after reading books 2 and 3 he definitely jumped into my top 5 favorite fictional characters list :)
I love this series and is a favorite reread of mine. The characters are the best.
You just made me want to go back and re-read. My copy of the Thief is so destroyed it's been read so many times
The fact nothing happens in this book may lead up to something amazing later? I can't wait if Ell continues the series to see what happens
Thanks for the review! I actually picked this book up because of Booktube and just haven’t read it yet!
I hope you like it! 😄
Wanted to give this a shot . even more so now , im digging that cover though i havent seen that particular cover
Oddly enough I completed this book just last month! I thought it was a solid read and loved the mythology!
AHH! i love this book/series. do you/anyone have any recommendations for similar books or series? similar in style, characters, setting, etc. i feel MWT's writing is very unique, but i'm hoping there is at least one other author with a similar style.
also - please post reviews of the other books in the series. it does keep getting better and better. i'm excited for the final book!
The beginning when you said “it doesn’t sound like anything I would like or that you would either”💀💀
Good deal. I will add this book to my list. You might find Homecoming Heist to your liking also.
I think I also like boring books most of the time. They don't seem boring to me, of course, until I start talking to people about them, and I'm like yeah... that does sound dull 😂
P. S. love your hair
I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile. I think I will pick it up.
I liked it because of Gen, I agree nothing happened but I wasn’t bored. The second and the third was the same, but sadly I was bored in the third one so I won’t continue with the series. Gen is the only saving grace.
The description of the guy saying that he knew the folktale better literally reminded me of someone I know...like it sounds exactly like him😂
Have you read any of the other books in the series in the last couple of years?
OMG!!!!! Finally The Thief review. Will you continue the series?
Absolutely! I’m thinking of picking the rest up in January...we’ll see! 😄
@@ebnovels I can't wait to hear your thought about this series because it gets better and better in every books, The final book is being released today.
Well now I gotta go pick this one up! 🤩 love the title of this video 🤣
If you liked the first one you will love the next two.
I can't remember if I've read this or not, but I have really deep memories of this book..... But I don't know what any of them are.... 😂
Thiefs derping around? Sign me up!
Just because that review I'm subscribing :)
If you like funny traveling stories with a lot of stories told along the way try kings of the wyld. It's hillarious 🤪
Haha, action is overrated 😜 Although I’m sorry you’re not loving that book!
What is the series name?
Thank u for the review!! 😊📖🍁🍂
Was it just me or was Sophos’s book really hard to get into. I was lost so many times during the read. It was a good book, but I was just very confused for half of it
Gen's absence was really apparent. I agree that it's a good read, but after previous entires in the series it was hard not to long for his appearance.
On my way to get the audiobook 😂
This.... kinda sounds rad to me too
It felt sorta like a less depressing Assassin’s Apprentice with a more mischievous mc 😄
Elliot Brooks you got me suuuper interested now haha
This series is the most boring book I have ever read, hence this is one of my favorite series of all time. There is something about Megan's writing style that I adore so much.
Hahaha, yes, exactly 😆
This is my favorittttte book I’m glad to find it being appreciated
Can someone explain to me why somebody would be impressed by the stealing abilities of a thief who got caught and arrested for thievery?
Doesn't sound like a good thief to me.
This is explained in the book
@@ebnovels Guess, I need to read it then 😉. I am curious by nature. Must have been a cat in a former life. 😊
Ok . .
It sounds like it’s just not for you 🤷🏻♀️
Elliot Brooks no I don’t think so. But I’ve heard so many people like it - I just want to understand why. I feel like all of the things you are told not to do in writing class is done in this book. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. My best friend loves this series.
