I admit that I was caught off guard when I saw a young Chusovitina. Logic would say that she did, in fact, start out as a child and grow older like everybody else, but watching the last fifteen years of her career might leave one with the impression that she's been the same age since the dawn of time.
She's gorgeous. Is Khorkina really taller than her? Her stats said she's 5'4. I though Khorkina was 5'4 too, but they always call her the tallest. Maybe she grew to 5'5 or 5'4 1/2
Yes. I think she was working towards her comeback then and also learning about becoming a coach herself. When I seen this for the first time on a tape I found, I was surprised to see that she had been working with the Karolyis.
I do not miss the days where the athlete's weight was a focus of attention. It has nothing to do with gymnastics- athleticism, desire and training do. It's also insane to think what Dominique M. was going through in the background of all this- a father no girl should be cursed with.
I was very young when they would put their weights up on the screen. Now I realize just how messed up that is! Like, I shouldn't know that Shannon Miller weighed 80 lbs! And then one time I watched a competition with I think Summer Reid and they made such a big deal about her size.
I really wish they wouldn't show that moment of Kerri falling on the bars. It's completely hesrtwrenching to hear her say "help me", eugh. So happy she recovered.
23:30 Brutal! Really sad when you hear her say, "please.. help me.." while gasping for air. She easily would've been paralyzed if she wasn't in such great shape.
I remember the first time we learned of that injury during a piece about Kerri at ‘94 US Nationals. Absolutely horrifying! She was incredibly lucky and what strength to come back from that and be the champion she was.
If Keri didn’t have the injury in team finals at the Olympics I think she would have medaled in the all-around. She was extremely consistent this year.
there's no way. there were 6 legit threats for gold. It was Lilia vs. Mo but all 3 Romanians were right behind plus Khorkina. Shannon Miller & Dominique Moceanu were not realistically going to medal if everyone hit. How in the world would Keri?
@@katies6596you seem to forget that several of those athletes you mentioned MADE MISTAKES during the AA finals and had shown themselves to be inconsistent in previous AA events at the world level. Keri had proven herself incredibly consistent during the course of the previous year to year and a half so- YES, it was a real possibility.
Yeah The judges were a little to pro USA , scoring others harder, it's like took max deductions ..it's also because we are judging routines by our current standard.. diffculity was viewed differently then and wasn`t always fully REWARDED especially if the routine had eras ..also remember that her score includes execution it's predominately execution since the routine started at a vaule of 9,4 it could have been 9.0 but I'm think that started later . Therefore pointed toes, locked legs, overall extension matter even more .if things where scored the same way they are now when she was young she would have been another Biles..because I know she could hit and land more than she competed she didn't need to .,why risk it
It always amazed me how good Powell's technique and execution was on VT and UB, but so bad on BB and FX. It's funny, she looked her best IMO in 97/98 and she quit then. She easily could've made the team in 2000.
You might want to check out the 1996 European Championships. Svetlana won the silver medal in the All-Around, which was the crowning achievement of her comeback!
Out of curiosity, does anyone know why we don't really see bails not finishing in handstand anymore? Most of these UB sets from this time (up until around 2004ish, I think), the women did overshoots but none of them finished in the handstands you always see now. Was it a COP change that mandated it?
Thee Words For You: Code of Points Because of the current code of points more difficult skills have come into play and because the gymnasts of this era are required to do the difficult skillls to contend, skills like the overshoot are unfortunately, no more.
I didn't know that Svetlana Boguinskaya made a comeback to gymnastics competitions!!! :o For me, she left after Barcelona '92 for doing "galas", where I saw her, here in France. Thank you for posting broadcasts that we never saw here in Europe!
Steve Nunno was the best thing that ever happened to Kerri Strug. She would hit handstands when he was coaching her. With Bela, her bars and beam form isn't great.
Having not been alive then, I always assumed Kerri strug was with Amanda Borden’s coach since she took her mushroom hairstyle. She was always such a follower. Had the bangs and ponytail like Kim Zmeskal , then the huge scrunchie like Shannon with Nunno.
Well, it was the style back then. I was alive in 96--8 years old, and I had the same hairstyles myself, especially the bowl cut. Also, the big scrunchies was Nunno's gym thing--Shannon Miller talked about how Peggy Liddick had given it to her one meet, and it just sort of became a thing for the Nunno girls...but, also, it was the 90s!
Could never stand him. What a gross thing to say about an athlete regardless of personal feelings. Tactless for a coach. And his display at the Olympic trials later that year made me dislike him even more.
Bela is a cheerleader!! I do agree with the commenatators. He has such good humor when something good happens. He would fit right in my sister's school by being a cheerleader!! But i read all these comments saying that kerri's jealous about stuff, but that's not true. She just felt left out and a bit timid, that's all.
And grossly abused by cruel coaches and a fan environment that wanted little porcelain doll figures instead of real looking young women. Good riddance to that era.
I was never sure about that, John has a musical background and back then there was a focus on the classical themes of the floor exercise. In those days, it just felt like a meet or recital, and good camera work and they let the pictures tell the story. John Tesh was perfect from that aspect.
@@evanwilliams6406 I it is something like the New York Mets announcers you have Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling who are the experts one being a former fabulous hitter and the other a great pitcher while Gary he has the mechanics of the booth down and is kind of like the fans are seeing during the game. I think Al Trautwig was the John Tesh roll after 96.
He was a cycling reporter for CBS back in the 1980s and NBC wanted to create an opportunity for him, so he started covering gymnastics in Barcelona in 1992. Despite what most people think, I never thought he was that bad. Aside from the occasional repetitiveness in the intro at the 1996 US Championships (which were in Knoxville) and the overdramatizing of the fluff pieces (which he was probably told to do), there was really nothing wrong with him.
And, Oksana continues to compete to this day. Unbelievable. ❤

TheSpaceShuttleChallengerbr Lol legit thought the same thing. Like I thought shes been 40 forever
It’s crazy to think back in 1996 she was considered old!
I know her since the 92 Olympics
LOL. I actually started watching her at the 1990 Goodwill Games when she was 15, so I saw much of her evolution.
I love that elfi calls the full in dismount "difficult" when strug and Phillips do it, but says "simple" when chuso does
especially when Chuso does a full out - and it’s named after her!
I think she meant that Chusovitina performed the skill so well that she made it look simple.
Oops. I just watched the video again. Disregard my previous comment.
Boginskaya is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO gorgeous!!! Like her lines are beautiful. She has definitely earned the name "Belarusian Swan"
+Kae Kae Jones Such a beautiful lady, like Ponor. Strength has so many different ways of presenting itself, you see it in Svetlana and in Kerri here.

Interesting how very few gymnasts used grips.
Love Kerri's BB 1st 4 element pass love to see more of that now a days "classic"
I like how Chuso almost goes up to handstand after the inverts. nice touch
The sound on this is driving me nuts. The voices going in and out and being overpowered by the crowd or music.
Love the Spanish girl's routine! Great artistry and music!
solid bars for Chuso....and with no grips !

At around 36:44, Kerri Strug gets a little jealous of Bela talking in Romanian to Alexandra Dobrescu. Drama!
I don't think so. Keri was commenting something to Bela that didn't have anything to do with that.
Jim Gault(2), Bela and Marta Karolyi(2), Steven Nunno, Tom and Lori Foster, and Arthur Akopian
“now 23 years old, ancient” wow how times have changed 😭😂
Steve Nunno was the best thing that ever happened to Kerri Strug. She would hit handstands when he was coaching her. With Bela, her bars and beam form isn't great.
+Jeffrey Landon That's the truth! Her form was great. She just couldn't handle the pressure of training with Shannon.
+crownblkprince I disagree. Try checking out her book Landing on My Feet A Diary of Dreams it explains why she left Nuno's.
the best thing to happen to any gymnast is that they are confident and talented yet comfortable and happy with their coaches. smh
Nunno is a great cheerleader. He is constantly cheering for his gymnasts... Like, super enthusiastically. Lol
Totally agree. Her form is abysmal. She left Nunno’s because she was overshadowed. Her book is nothing but an ego boost for herself. A shame.
