  • Learning that a critical piece of your avionics is not working is no fun event. Watch as I learn how to diagnose the issue and decide on my next steps.

Hi Steve - I have a 2021 RV12is similar to yours, only blue and I have the GTN650xi . On the ferry flight from AZ to MD after purchase, my ferry pilot reported intermittent ADSB issues noted by several controllers. When I got the airplane home I had my electronics guy run some tests and he couldn't duplicate the problem consistently but did note some failed reporting data. After several days of testing all of the connections and associated hardware, Garmin recommended we replace the GTX35R with a factory refurbished unit (for $500) and that solved the problem. Good luck with your fix. Mike.

Thanks Mike for the comment. Sorry you had to put out the extra bucks. In my next video I will explain the remedy, which in my case was changing some settings in the Garmin G3X. I am fortunate that I had no additional expense to fix this.

I know every situation is different, and I don’t have Garmin avionics, but I had something similar when I checked my plane (Zenith). Luckily, my fix was a simple settings change. Good luck troubleshooting!

After getting some advice from other viewers I am confident that this situation can be resolved by a few settings changes. I will post a new video with the process.

I enjoy your videos. I built a classic RV-12 with Dynon avionics. On my first flight in October 2022 from a non-towered field KIKV I spoke with the local controller at a nearby class C airport KDSM. Nothing wrong was reported. I ran this same report after the flight with no red flags. Also on my Dynon Skyview display it gives status of my ADS-B system while in flight. Maybe your Garmin has such a feature. Good luck. I hoped it's not too costly to get remedied. Doing an occasional report is a great idea.

Thank you Greg. I will investigate to see if the Garmin will report the status or even give me options to make an adjustment to bring it back in line.

I think the transponder's signal integrity setting isn't set right. Go into Config Mode while it's booting up (holding menu button while rebooting), go to XPDR. See if there is a SIL or integrity setting, it should be 1E-7 for your system.. not "VFR GPS", since the GPS 20A is adsb compliant.

Thanks! Since posting this video I have done some further research and with advice from you and others I think I can resolve this easily enough. I feel a little sheepish that I haven't read the Garmin Operators Guide cover-to-cover, and I will admit that in my next video, too. I appreciate your comment and I'll let you know what I find out.

Rob, I'm going to confirm the fix worked once the weather clears up here. I want to give you some credit in my next video. Is that OK with you?

Interesting. Did you reach out to Vans at all? How are avionics warranteed?

Have not contacted Vans. I suspect any warranty comes from Garmin directly. I will need to confirm from Vans that avionics were registered to receive warranty cover. I'm going to see what my avionics tech recommends. First I need to have the issue explored to know more.
