What an enormous disaster! People have lost their lives, people missing, a massive mess which will be a nightmare to clean up etc.. From The Netherlands I wish Baltimore strength and sufficient resources in equipment and manpower to solve this hughe problem.
TH-cam hides my comments, crazy how everyone involved allowed a ship to run into a bridge, again, in 2024... because they wanted to save money by not using tugboats. Even a small child knows about tugboats. I personally, in all my years have never crash my boat into objects catastrophically, it's actually extremely difficult to be this incompetent. But when Baltimore is involved I'm not surprised.
The loss of life is tragic but could have been so so much worse if not for those responsible for stopping traffic to the bridge. So far it's estimated the loss of life is 6 people which is very minimal for how large of an accident this could have been.
How exactly do they remove all that?
I worked in Baltimore 13 years ago. When I saw the ship hit the bridge my hands just grasped my abdomen. Wooooo, my Lord and my God 😱😱😖😖🤯🤯😢. I drove across this bridge before. My prayers go out to every family. I pray for the shipping and supply chain industry, I pray for all the investigators for fortitude and mental clarity as they piece together how this happened and drafting their reports. And I thank God that many were spared.
@markymarkvancity that and the fact that it happened at 1:30 in the morning helped kept the death toll as low as it is. Can you imagine how much worse it this had occured in rush hour?
My condolences to the families who lost their family members from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. True workers true Americans who worked hard to support their families.

Why? You don't know them.
Why hasn’t anybody bothered to ask why the construction crew weren’t notified? Anybody working on the bridge should have direct communication with the coast guard, who can issue an immediate evacuation. If this had happened then, in 90 seconds, probably they could’ve driven off that bridge and they’d be alive. Something very very wrong here. The coast guard waits for the ship to issue a mayday? Why is nobody watching to take preemptive action? There was no need for anybody for die.

P.S. In addition to the heartbreaking loss of life ~ the logistics of getting this ship out of the harbor, dismantling the Francis Key Scott bridge - and - ALL that goes with this massive clean-up to simply allow the channel to re-open is absolutely mind-boggling!!! 😢
The ship's insurance should pay for ALL of the costs of rebuilding. Not a single cent should come from taxpayers.
@@dannydaw59I agree. However, right away, Biden and the Governor in MD already made the decision to have taxpayers foot the bill.

It is so true. They seem to be focusing more on the bridge and ship damage not the loss of the people that died on the bridge😢 rest in peace. And prayers go out to the family. 🙏
Some people are more worried about their Temu order getting to them on time than some random people who died a slow horrible death tragically.
They have to be realistic and focus on what's important, while the loss of life is terrible, the collapsed bridge cleanup will take years and has currently put a stop to any shipping in or out which will affect in some way millions of people. IMO its more respectful not to focus on life's lost and let the people grieve without shoving a camera in their face to talk about the tragedy they are facing.
That blip in the video was a PR stunt by corporate garbage to try and score “social credit” points to help their esg score. They don’t gaf about minority’s, they’re using them.
I'm sure the appropriate people are doing what they can for the families. The loss of life is tragic of course, but the closure of the channel is going to be a major blow to shipping, the economy, work which is also going to affect a lot of families as well. Also think of the conditions the divers have to go through to recover the bodies, it's a mix of sharp metal girders, unstable structure and concrete, not the safest conditions to dive even for a recovery operation for the bodies, and I bet that is jarring for the them knowing they can't do more safely.

Great reporting from the scene of a tragedy!
This really is a good piece.
As is always the case, the captain, and he alone takes full responsibility for hitting anything. One person causing so much pain and chaos…unbelievable & unacceptable!
Why should he? The ship lost power rendering it uncontrollable. I don't see how the captain can be held responsible for that.
What I'm wondering is why don't the bridge piers in the USA have pile-driving protection in rivers? In Germany and Europe there is a wide concrete base around every pier on bridges over rivers, sometimes even streams. This is to minimize the damage to the structures caused by ships, floating debris and other things.
Most do.
I already know what two of the NTSB's recommendations in the wake of this disaster will be. One is that ships of that size need tighter handling, such as using tugboats, when navigating in tight ports like Baltimore. The tugs assisting the Dali that night should not have left the Dali's side so soon, and if they were needed elsewhere at the time, it would mean that such ports need more tugboats on standby to handle all those massive ships at once. Two is that bridges of that calibre over heavily-used shipping channels need proper protection to be able to take the force of such crashes. Bridges all over North America and probably around the world may already be in the process of being reassessed in terms of such protection.
They be no such recommendation because it’s a stupid expectation. Having tugs in such a wide harbour. What next. Tugs pulling planes all the way to the runway threshold?
You do realize that the bridge was built in 1972 and opened in 1977. It's built to 70s codes, not 2024 codes.
Saving on Tug costs?, I don't know the cost of running a couple of Tugs compared to the cost of clearing the waterways, loss of lives, legal costs, bridge replacement cost, the cost lost of income to the port, it has to add up to something?@@xr6lad

WHY WOULD a massive ship not have AUXILARY power?? THEY must all be retrofitted to prevent a RECURrence
Or use of Tugs until in open water and away from bridge overpasses
they do, and 3 generators
They should build a suspension bridge like as Golden Gate bridge here.
most likely, for a span of this width, it would be a cable-stayed bridge (like the new Tappan Zee Bridge, or the new portion of the Oakland Bay Bridge). Classic suspension bridges (like the Golden Gate) are indicated for much longer unsupported spans in which the stiffness of the road deck is insufficient to support the horizontal loading of the diagonal cables on a cable-stayed bridge.
Hear that. Ever been on or seen the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that goes from Annapolis to Kent Island (the Eastern Shore)? It's 4.3 miles long. Other than the ends it's a combo of cantilever and suspension sections. A lot of people are terrified of it. And now I'm more nervous about it. (Not to be confused with the Bay Bridge/Tunnel in VA but that's scary too. Much longer but not nearly as high).
@@jeremyc6054. It's nearly the same length of the Golden Gate, 1.6 miles. Just that each end is plain flat concrete bridge on pilings a good way out on each side. They're still standing, would be considerably quicker to reuse them but they probably won't.
@@mikewillett5076in this case, the relevant "length" is the length of the longest unsupported span (i.e. with no other vertical supports between them). The approach viaducts on either side (supported by a series of pilings) would be in addition to that, and can be quite long (as in the case of the Francis Scott Key Bridge). The Golden Gate Bridge has an unsupported center span of 4200 feet. The Francis Scott Key Bridge had an unsupported span of 1200 feet.
Generally, cable-stayed bridges are the most economical choice for main spans up to about 2000 feet, although a few very new ones (built since 2010 or so) are in the 3000' range. Conventional suspension bridges are the only game in town for main spans longer than that, with the longest ones currently a little over 6000 feet.
Another point to keep in mind is that conventional suspension bridges require very large abutments at either end in order to anchor the main suspension cables to the bedrock, these would have to be built from scratch (if it's even possible, depending on the local geography). Cable-stayed bridges do not require this, as all loads are transferred to the vertical pier(s).
The main advantage to going with a conventional suspension design here would be the ability to have a wider open channel, although this would come at massively increased cost (and probably longer duration to completion), and may not result in any additional navigability depending on the water depth outside of the existing channel.
Or a tunnel
This s heartbreaking and terrifying ❤❤😢

the bridge has significant corrosion issues, most of the failures are at the riveted joints. The ship slashed through the concrete legs like a knife, the bridge was doomed from that point.
Dang what a mess.
Why are the citizens of the U.S. footing the bill for a rebuild? The owners of the boat , along with the insurance company, should be held accountable.
Law suits for compensation certainly will come. And that takes a long process. You can't wait until then.
From watching this and other detailed reports, I think the big 'take-away' is that modern, ultra-heavy ships, and old bridges with inadequate protection around their piers, don't mix. I worry about the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge, just north of San Francisco. It looks more rickety than the F.S. Key Bridge ever did. Oil tankers and a few freighters frequently go under that particular bridge.
I wish there was some way to they could alert the workers in time to escape that disaster. I am grateful the authorities were able prevent anymore lives lost.
WHY NO AIR HORNS TO WARN ANY BODY ON THE BRIDGE
Systems onboard the ship where out for a while, nothing working.
This is very scary because you can see that the ship is damaged on the bow but it looks like maybe even the side is damaged and containers of hazardous materials I believe there’s bad weather this weekend. I can’t even think what would happen, if that ship’s cargo shifted.

Can someone explain why ships sailing through such a narrow place did not have pilots and tugboats to insure the passage.
2 pilots on board and tugs are released after the ship leaves the harbor. It’s a straight through channel, according to the NTSB. With the expense of rebuilding I believe the NTSB recommendations will include tugs in the straight channel at least past the new bridge

For the record someone left a comment that in China they use tugs to move ships around so I went looking for answers. I could not find proof that the Chinese use tugs outside of their ports. But what the port of Shanghai does is require a declaration that the ship is mechanically sound and the ship is subject to an inspection of the mechanical soundness of the ship. This might have prevented having a boat subject to engine power loss docking in your harbour. Everybody give me your thoughts.

The shipping company should pay for this repair
Should they? The crew wasn't even piloting the boat, they had turned over the controls to the Port Authority pilots for navigation.
There should be some liability there, but frankly the cost of rebuilding would be more burden than any one company could carry. There will be lawsuits, oh yes. Still, we're talking about federal budget levels of money to fix this in a reasonable span of time.
@@raterus I'm pretty sure the pilots are not at fault, it looks like the ship lost power, navigation computers, and controls were dead.
Was it a failure on the ship itself...?
You know they won't
In light of the time required to cut portions of the debris, the Army and Navy might opt to use cutting charges similar to what's used in building implosions.
so many uninformed comments here, do you realize when this bridge was built in the 70's the largest cargo was more than 4 times smaller than today. Do you also realize the bridge fell the way it did due to how bridges are engineered and constructed. If you are not informed don't comment on it. god bless the victims and their family's.
A bit more information:
The largest cargo ship in the 70s was the Panamax class with 3000+ TEU capacity.
The MV Dali is in the Mega Max class with 24,000+ TEU capacity.
So my initial statement about it being 4 times bigger looks to be incorrect, it looks like as far as TEU's go the cargo ships in the 70s could carry 8 times less containers than today's container ships can carry. You also need to look at displacement as well when comparing ships but i could not find any solid information as to what the largest cargo ships displacement was in the US in the 70s. But as you can see what they designed the bridge to handle in case of incident is no where close to what ships are today so its no suprise with the ship only traveling at about 7-8 knots was able to crush the protection the bridge column had.

Step 1. Start removing those waiting ships that are blocking the inland waterway. They won't be completing their port call so get them rerouted before they start running out of fuel and need supplies. Use tugs!
Step 2. Hire floating cranes and barges for ferrying debris to a marshalling point to investigate later.
Step 3. Engage tug boats to control the Dali in the current. This should have been a standing policy for large ships.
Step 0. Recover the remains of the deceased whenever it's safe to do so.
Step X. Assign some entity to redesign the bridge replacement. Set out better safety rules for large shipping in inland waterways. (These are tasks apart from the recovery itself. Their timing can run concurrently.)
Step Xb. Smooth the logistics of rerouting all the cruise passengers and cargo that can't get back into that port.
Step Y. Look at WHY (one of) America's major container ports on the eastern seaboard is at such a vulnerable pinch point. Think about strategic contingencies.

Unnerved by that last aerial shot of an oil slick escaping the immediate area. Why are there no booms corralling it? Heard bow deck was laded with highly toxic cargo.
If it's just oil that isn't much. You don't want to know the chemicals and pollutants that plants around Sparrows Point and Curtis Creek (both right near there) dumped 24/7 before it became regulated. It's much better now but I still don't want steamed crabs from waters that close to the city!
Its Baltimore everything within 100 miles of that joint is toxic. Now it has a wrecked economy to boot. But the illegals are thriving on the taxpayer dime. While legal citizens are even worse off than they were the other day.
Those workers should have equipped with being dialed in to hear that first MayDay call somehow. They just weren’t protected like the back and forth traffic was. So sad that they were so vulnerable. RIP 😢
Where is OSHA when you need them?
In Spanish, right?
It’s not a regular workplace hazard. There are only so many procedures you can have in place. Probably just as likely to get struck by a meteor. How many ships have gone under that bridge without having a mechanical issue that caused them to veer into it?
I think that’s the kind of guys you find behind a Home Depot looking for work. I bet they were paid poorly and regulations were lacking.
I live near the Panama Canal and have to constantly go over the bridge and while the pillars have some protection, theres just too much ship traffic and I know one will crash against one someday, its just probabilities. Theres no way to control yourself when you lose power, like they did (thres a good video not on youtube ) for a while. Not in these massive ships.
Evidence now shows that electrical issues plagued the boat prior to departure. The captain made a call to depart, probably whilst praying all wouid hopefully be okay, and we can now see how ill advised that was. Again, everything falls back on the captain. One man takes full responsibility. It’s that simple.
I believe strongly every human must learn how to swim cars should have tools to brake glass if this ever happens.
I imagine the dead 6 are trapped under debris
I don't think a "boat" is quite that big.
Bottom line Baltimore wasn't prepared for this eventuality. It was more important to house and feed the illegals. The reduction on important critical harbor services was apparent. Now because of their ineptness they have bigger issues but will still support the illegals while the citizens get even less. Grief will eventually turn into anger over their politicians spending their tax dollars in the wrong place. A few dollars spent on Tug Boats would have solved this entire debacle. God Bless the Families involved.
All it takes is a low voltage to the throttle control and that is what happens. Boats are always moving and erroding away due to electrolysis. Stuff happens.
Nobody can feel the pain then another person’s going through. So we shouldn’t assume that people should. Everybody is doing everything they can in this tragedy. It’s not about one person being more important than another person. We live in such a narcissistic society.
The real question is in a world full of redundant safety measures why were there no precautions made for a disaster like this
Because it was deliberate
I don't understand why they didn't blare. The fog horn continuously to warn the workers on the bridge to get out of there ?
On the other hand, why weren't the workers aware that the cargo ship was slowly headed right towards the bridge?
How the ship stopped after hitting the bridge? Is it stuck in the wreck?
Step 1 will be to clear a path to the harbor
Step 2 will be to resume freight traffic asap
Step 3 is clean-up, collecting evidence and clearing the way
Step 4 is rebuilding a bridge that can stand a boat hit
Can cbs news please report about the hazardous materials spilled. And don’t pretend this isn’t an issue. Why isn’t this being reported. I can literally smell it.
All cargo ships can be expected to carry hazardous materials...such as the hairspray, perfume, shaving cream, soaps, and all kinds of other products that you as a consumer use on a daily basis. This is NOT a hazmat disaster, it's just a matter of respecting the fact that there are some hazardous materials that will be encountered during salvage and cleanup operations. Don't get focused on what's NOT the major problem.
@@Turboy65The local ecosystem is effectively trashed now though, god you're shortsighted
This makes me realize that the sea in the bay is not that deep since the bridge is still visible. From that rectangle height
Money first before health of people
Some of the hazardous materials were perfumes so yeah…
Maybe this tragedy will change harbor practices. Maybe the use of tugs anywhere in harbors within drifting distance of structure should become mandatory.
paranoia will get you no where bud
Maybe they might build a suspension bridge, way safer when you got ships going under them as they usually only have 2-3 pillars with massive clearance between them
RIP mi gente ❤😢
So unbelievable bad that there are no protections against boats hitting the bridge. Especially in an area with so much heavy boat traffic.
We definitely need an underwater bridge for this or at least a separate ship route
That would be a tunnel and there is one a few miles from this bridge
Its an underwater bridge right now
They call those "tunnels"
I’d be worried about fire. A few damaged batteries and it could spread to the rest of the ship.
This is devastating
2 year investigation? Seems excessively long.
There were no tug boats escorting the ship down the channel?
Probably take 2 years to work that out let alone the cost of the investigation into the $million$
Because you don't know why we use tugboats
@@rensinclair4218 actually I do, and some ports mandate the attendance of tug boats for just this sort of situation. It doesn’t mean the tug boats have to be used, but they are there in case to prevent channels being blocked, collision with other vessels and collision with bridges etc.
This certainty is an awful disaster. We're hearing all about it here in Australia.
Oml I can't imagine the moment they realize they were gonna be stuck under tons of metal 😢
