Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on TH-cam, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on TH-cam. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on TH-cam, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

Please continue on your Steely Dan journey. You'll be glad you did, I promise! Did you catch Michael McDonald on the background vocals on Peg?
It's important to know that the core of Steely Dan was really Donald Fagan and Walter Becker. They brought in a huge array of extremely talented studio musicians specifically for each track. There were returning talents like drummers Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, and Bernard Purdie and guitarists like Larry Carlton and Denny Diaz as well as others. But they were really more of a studio, not a touring, band because of that ever-changing line-up.

Three things you can count on in a Steeley Dan song: a funky groove, some jazz elements, and instrumental perfection.

Like Steely Dan. Very jazzy. There's a newer outfit, Monkey House, whose sound is arrestingly close to Steely Dan's (one of the SD guys has been involved with their recordings), so if you don't manage to catch Steely Dan live keep an eye out for Monkey House instead...
Also, check out Donald Fagen's solo album Nightfly. Some great stuff on there including the title track and Walk Between The Raindrops...

Appreciate the analogy of classifying music into genres like isles in the grocery store. Maybe we didn’t consider which genre music belonged in back in the day because bands played multiple types of genres. For example, Steely Dan is jazz, funk, and pop, like in this song.

  • @armandogarza6181
    @armandogarza6181 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Steely Dan is gold. They definitely have jazz influence. In the 60s and 70s, you had Rock and Hard Rock and the band's influences were just that. There's too many labels IMO, but I don't have a problem with that, peace Shawn.

Great song big hit and a very fine funky groove along with Michael McDonald singing background vocals. Now if you haven’t tried My Old School that is a must reaction to do!SHAWN the problem with labeling certain bands is that they may play different styles on different albums or even the same album. Musician often times progress into various directions as their knowledge, likings and skills grow! Steely Dan is one of these artists and Jethro Tull fits into that category too, just to mention a couple.

With the 60s came the era of the studio player. In LA, they were collectively known as the Wrecking Crew, with many Steely players coming from the tail end of the 60s. But, there was a new generation of crack studio guys.
On Katy Lied, it was 20 yo Jeff Porcaro on drums along with the great Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine. There are some great photos, both played with Sonny and Cher.
The new generation and the old. Knowing their appreciation of history and studio players, I like to think Becker & Fagan did it on purpose. Porcaro and the Wrecking Crew II.

Genres and sub-genres and sub-genres of subgenres of popular music, or really modern music, let's say, have exponentially proliferated for sure.
I mean, with just Metal alone, by the early 2000s, there were literally in the hundreds of genres and subgenres for that.

We totally GET why genres and categories are useful, and what you're saying is absolutely valid. But what I think us oldsters are trying to tell you is that when WE were listening to it, when it came out, especially in the late 60's and into the 70's, there was a musical and cultural moment where EVERYBODY seemed to TRANSCEND genre -- when there was so much wild experimentation and openness to different people's music that, after the Beatles, groups were going in so many myriad directions, you couldn't categorize them.
So on the radio, you'd hear ALL of these songs on just ONE rock station, that now you might categorize as soul, funk, hard rock, soft rock, pop, tin pan alley, synth rock, futuristic space rock, country, folk, ballads, social statements, satire, apocalyptic jeremiads (like IN THE YEAR 2525). It was an amazing and halcyon time when, for a moment, we transcended genre and also race -- think of how many multi-racial bands were around at that time -- from Sly and the Family Stone to the Allman Brothers to Santana to Three Dog Night to Blood Sweat and Tears -- and I could go on and on.
There was definitely a movement to separate that incredible unity and synchrony we were experiencing through music, that sort of begins with the disco/punk wars of the later 1970's in NYC and London, and continued apace for the next few decades. God bless you and your channel, Shawn -- you're great and so many of us older people love to watch you listen to and really appreciate and understand the music of our youths.

The thing about studio musicians was the fact that they were in great demand. When The Monkees were formed; studio musicians would be hired to play all the music for the first and second albums. The guys only came in to sing. They would later have to learn each song in order to perform live. Then, go back to the set to start the next season. They didn't have the time to play the music; nor were they given the change. One of the biggest reasons why Mike and Peter were so upset with the direction The Monkees were headed. After taking control of things, they learned the hard way why studio musicians were used.
