    My mother left Guatemala for the US in the 1980’s in order to flee the civil war caused by US imperialism and to help her family back in Guatemala. The stories she told me of the poverty and various people going missing not to mention the mental scars of living through that time period was a huge factor as to why I became a socialist specifically an anarchist. There’s a quote from a documentary on South African apartheid I love to say whenever people around me wonder why the US has so many enemies.

    Secretary Of State John Foster Dulles represented United Fruit an American Company in Guatemala . United Fruit was angry because peasants who worked in slave labor were given land to grow their own fruit by president Guzman.
    United Fruit had never paid land taxes . The poor peasants paid land taxes on the land they worked.
    During the CIA coup to oust Guzman the senseless killing of the poor began.
    Bodies of peasants who were alive were thrown out of planes to their death .
    Vans of armed men kidnapped peasants . If their loved ones asked their whereabouts their tongues were cut out. I’ve read figures of 30,000 murdered over the CIA Coup .
    Republican President Eisenhower ordered the coup . Secretary Of State , John Dulles was a conservative who professed to be a Christian who went to Eisenhower requesting him to oust President Guzman .
    Eisenhower ordered a genocide of the poor in Guatemala for the specific purpose to aid the rich and execute the poor . The CIA Couo was to destroy democracy in Guatemala & finance the rich. President Guzman was not a communist .

    As a result of the US Corporate Fascism, peasants and workers in Central American and in the Caribbean region never got a chance to establish a solid middle-class like in the United States.
    Today illegal workers flocking to US border in search of jobs are the consequences of repression of workers' movements. The US government was guilty of giving to a few companies the monopoly to control all the wealth of Central America.
    It was the same as ruthless Spanish colonialism and exploitation.

    In what different ways did the U.S. put pressure on Arbenz?
    To what extent did economics play a role in U.S. intervention? (You must make arguments both

    • @lupevame
      @lupevame 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Martin I´ll try to answer as briefly as I can.
      Pressure of the US: Propaganda against Arbenz for the sake of public opinion, stop selling weapons to Guatemala in 1951, stop any aconomical assistance in 1953, send John Peurifoy to "negotiate", the OAE Venezuela conference of 1954 where Dulles tried to gain continental support against Guatemala and the CIA operations like WASHTUB and PBFORTUNE that were carried out before Castillo´s coup.
      Economics: Arbenz reforms took land away from the UFCO (which in reality didn´t matter because the company had A LOT of land that was not being used for anything) and the fact that Labour Code demanded a lot of stuff that was against their interests (Better salaries and working conditions, the right to strike, the right to organize in unions, paid vacations, compensation in case of firing, etc). However, in other way one can make the argument that was for the common good of Guatemala.
      Dulles Brothers: Easy, dude. One was secretary of State and the other was chief of the CIA. Both of them had business with the UFCO in one way or another so Arbenz reforms annoyed a couple of guys that were pretty damn powerful in the US government.
      USSR: Not A LOT but they did had a role. The soviets had contact mainly with the Guatemalan Communist Party (PGT) and when Arbenz became desperate for weapons near the end of his government he secretly contacted the USSR with the help of his main advisor (Communist leader Jose Manuel Fortuny) to buy a cargo of weapons.
      However, the US found out about this and matters became even worse.
      The soviets protested the US intevention in Guatemala but they didn´t do anything to help Arbenz, since they wanted to avoid a confrontation with the US.
      Hope it helps.

    • @lupevame
      @lupevame 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Jacobo Árbenz believed that the main problem with Guatemala was the fact that the whole economic infraestructure of the country was practically controlled by US corporations within a system that favored economic imperialism and the power of the foreign companies over the interests of the nation.
      Most of these corporations didn´t pay taxes, they were practically monopolies that demanded special treatment and favours from the government and they refused to follow the Labour Code, along with the luxury of having tons of cheap labour force, mainly in the form of poor peasants and mayans. About 3/4 of the whole land in the country belonged to barely 2% of the population (mainly powerful businessmen and wealthy families that had power since the colony) making Guatemala a country with an alarming rate of inequality.
      All of these methods exploited the lower classes and drowned the country in an economic dependency of the United States.
      Árbenz Land Reform was basically a proyect in which "lazy land" (land that was not being used for anything productive) was taken away from the corporations and the landlords in orger to give it to peasant families. The landlords received a compensation though, but many were extremely angry.
      You could say that Árbenz was a moderate socialist, but in reality a lot of his policies had a lot of sense and many were even capitalist in nature.

    You got it. In the words of Major General Smedley Butler, USMC, "War is a racket: A few profit and the many pay."
    Here's another quote:
    "We have about 50% of the world's wealth, but only 6.3% of its population. We should cease to talk about unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of living standards, and democratization. [W]e are going to have to deal in straight power concepts." -George F. Kennan, U.S. State Dept Policy Planning Study 23, February 1948

      Cuál es la gana de comparar con Bukele, el tipo va bien, va a su ritmo, su gente lo quiere y lo ha defendido más, nosotros dejamos que humillaran a Arbenz, que lo desnudaran y dañarán su honor al señalarlo de comunista bajo nuestras narices o al menos bajo las narices de la población de medidos del siglo XX. Aceptamos dictaduras, asesinatos en masa, masacres con justificaciones penosas como la de Panzos. Deberíamos dejar a Bukele hacer lo suyo y preocuparnos por el chiquero que tenemos como Estado

      Communism is and will always be a threat to anyone, but the thing is, a country like the US who enjoys preaching about freedom did something anyone could expect from places like Rusia or china (a red force trying to expand their crap with fear while cleaning their asses with people's disagreement), their deeds lead my country into decades of right wing dictatorships (not different from the very critiziced left wing dictatorships which I do not support) and full support to the oligarchy, reducing public education and summiting us to experience a very noticeable corruption, indigenous communities being killed or almost vanished while blaming them on being communist factions, The UN said that during Efrain Rios Montt's period, 93% of crimes against humanity were done by Guatemala's armed forces while the remaining 7% belonged to the communist guerilla. (There is a movie called "La Llorona" by Jairo Bustamante, which portrays part of Montt's judgement while feeding the movie with a little bit of paranormal horror, as I've seen many US citizens saying that it portrays the harm done by the spaniards and I'm here to disagree and spread what it really shows which is just one of the many right wing dictatorships we had during the 20th century).
