Hot fires can ignite tree roots. Fire can travel underground along the roots and pop up days later. I lived in a forest area and our fire dept would come check any fire daily for a week then every other day for another week. Old trees burn longer and deeper than young trees. Stay safe! ❤
I share your feelings for Cedar trees. Where I live in South Dakota we call them garbage trees. I've always loved burning every year and mowing the seedlings when they came up in the Summer. Since we sold the farm the new owners have done no upkeep on the pastures. Within a few years the Cedars and Buck Brush have taken over to a point that there is no pasture. The grass has been totally choked out. So thank you for caring for your land as it should be! It's amazing how rejuvenating a good burn can be. It's gonna be awesome come Spring!
Looking forward to spring grasses. Where there is smoke there is fire! Keep making your regular rounds and hopefully the weather stays in your favor.
You and Betty did a great opening !!! All the Bison are looking good ! Big Joe looks amazing !! As always . The burn looks like puzzle pieces from the drown , perfect lines and curves all the way around ! You all did a great job !! Dusty you did a wonderful job getting it ready for the burn !! Now the waiting game for spring grasses . Blessings to you all !!
Thank you! 🦬
@ Bridget Greene... Ditto.
Big Joes head is mahoosive
In hindsight, a camp shovel would have been useful.---Those bison weren't running for the gate, they were after the candy!---Love the drone shots & epic music!
When spring comes you will have the greenest pastures
Yes! Looking forward to it! Hopefully we get good spring rains
Can't help but think perfect time to clean up those ponds. I was glad to see Black Betty looking so sweet. Lol
Yes, not an ideal situation but best to make the best of an unfortunate situation and get the ponds ready for the rain! Betty is a character for sure! 🐓Thank you! 🦬
I absolutely loved that you walked around Hornacek in just talking! Talk about one of the best openings of the video ever. ☺️
I grew up on a horse and cow farm and I remember back in the day where we would burn certain pastures for the cattle. The one thing about TH-cam that I enjoy is it is showing the other side of a life many people would have no clue about! I know nothing about Bison but to learn about it through you it’s wonderful. So from not only an entertainment point of you but an education standpoint I truly do appreciate it!
Love how you respect mother Nature and her land. Here's to a wonderful spring with plenty of grazing for the Bison!
Thank you!
Amazing pictures from the drone. Wonderful job on the burn. And keeping an eye on it. 💖🐂💖
To see such a precise execution of the control burn to benefit the land as Mother Nature does was incredible. Yes, all towards the raising and preserving the Bison. Yet, there's a whole ecology that needs to be for the Bison to thrive. Great love and respect for you and yours making it happen.
The aerial shots were great 👍. You got a lot of tenacity with this project. I wish you the best and keep safe
Dusty, those drone shots sure give you a bird's eye view of the property and a clearer picture for us viewers !! Thank you.
Do keep an eye on those fires left. Best of luck to you and yours.
The burn was really cool & interesting to learn about. Can't wait to see the new growth ect in the spring & all the animals that'll benefit, enjoy & be drawn to it!

It's SO IMPORTANT to have all burns under control !! As you know, nobody gets hurt and properties are not lost. I congratulate you Dusty for organizing a great burn plan. Looks great and now we wait for the rains/snow to grow the grass for your 🦬 bison herds !!
As an Aussie I was so glad to see that you were doing what the land needed. Be aware however that the tree that is still alight could end up burning for even years depending on the type. Fires went through in a cemetery in the early 1980's and some big old trees looked to have survived the fires. A year or so later it was discovered that they were burning and even the roots were burning.
😵😵💫
So glad you found the spots that were still burning
I couldn't leave you walking around with the chicken in your arms that surprised me. Hope you can get all the fires out so there's not a chance for something to go wrong. We like it that you keep us informed what you're doing thank you very much
I think the Bison have cubes on their mind as well an escape plan.
Lol, yes! 🦬
Great job on the burn. Pasture looks good. Glad you caught the burning tree. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.
Thank you! 🦬
What happens in many western, evergreen forest fires is that the fire smolders at high heat, low flame up tree roots and then just under the bark of the trunk until the fire gets some oxygen. Once there is oxygen there are actusl explosions of bark, sap, and sparks from the main trunk or along the branches. This engulfs the tree in question in flame turning it into a fire ball and often catching near by trees; or breaching other trees' bark and tuurning thier oxygen starved fires into additional fire balls.
Wow, that’s interesting! I had no idea. Thank you for the great information!
Yes! My brother retired after 42 years with the forest service. They had one fire that they thought was mopped up, but flared up again six or seven days later because the fire had gone down into the roots and smoldered all that time until conditions were perfect for it to start another fire! Those embers can fly on the wind for a mile or more.
Love this! Carrying around a chicken, bison following you, deer, pecan trees, fire..... doesn’t get any better than this!
And it's not planned, just his normal life.
Love that you are able to give things away so it can be used and not left to rust away...thats amazing... Holding a chicken should be in EVERY video... TFS
Hello Dusty and the Baker Family 👪. Thank you for sharing this video it's interesting how everything looks like after a burn 🔥 and what it's going to look like after it grows back in. Locking forward to seeing what it looks like. Remember stay safe and may God continue to bless you and your family 👪 🙏 ❤ 🇺🇸
That looks so great!! I can’t wait to see the Big Joe herd out exploring in bright green grass.
Excellent job with the burn, you guys did really well. A testament to the planning and effort you put into it. Well done to all the professionals and volunteers who assisted.
Just wow! The before and after are amazing.
Your burn was so well done and I was really interested in seeing the other fires that popped up. Good thing you went out. The land is going to look amazing!!!! Can hardly wait until the bison are on there!!
Wild blackberry bushes spread by their roots , After a good rain it is somewhat easier to pull them out.
Thanks for the info! Might be able to use the grapple to pull them up after a good rain!
@@CrossTimbersBison I worked a large field by gloved hands, it is surprising how long those roots are.
Remember the pioneers crossing the prairie headed to the west would hunt for and burn buffalo patties to cook their meals as there wasn’t much wood then.
Hello Mary how are you doing,
where are you from?
It was fantastic that you've been able to provide a couple of things that you don't need to others that do! It looks like the yearlings have figured out that the green machine means good things! Though it was Big Joe and the ladies who got the treats. 😁 I remember hearing that the wildlife love to be on ground that has burnt. To see the deer proves it! Have you showed the wooden barn before? If not, I'd love to see to see the inside! Yeah, just let the electric company know about the pole. Thank goodness you were keeping an eye on the burnt area. I know you'll continue to check it and "clean it up" for a while to come. I can vision it all as a green pastures with bison roaming on it!
We
Dusty, to eradicate cane blackberries, this is what we up here in the Pacific NW use:
1 gallon white vinegar, 1 pound Epsom salt, 1 cup dawn dish detergent. The combo will cut thru the waxy leaves, dehydrate them and then kills the plant. Give it a try.
Gotta love how you never explain just why you're carrying that chicken around. Betty seems to be enjoying it.
Hello Dusty,
Ohhh yeah... Big Joe! Big Joe! Thank you for taking us out and looking around after that burn. I liked seeing the before and after. See you in the next one, take care and God bless...
We had the root system of a tree burn for over a week one winter. Couldn't believe it. Looking forward to y'all getting some rain and those fields greening up!
Used to help out heather burning in Scotland. A lot of the ground was peat, if it was very dry it could also burn underground. One year we were going back daily for a month with 50 gallons of water to douse it, finally got it out. Amazing how tenacious fire can be isn't it.
Beautiful job! Beautiful land! I love watching your journey!! :)💪
Dusty it was thick that's why you still have hot spots good luck. Enjoy all that work
The pastures will look amazing in the spring
Stay safe
Love the bison 🦬 herds
God bless love from West Central Texas 💜
Never leave empty handed, chainsaw , 5 gal. Bucket water, etc. Good job in finding.
Dusty. I think you should open every video while carrying a chicken!
I agree ! Nothing like seeing a rancher carrying a chicken!
Looks more like a Rooster to me! Correct Species, wrong sex! 😆 lol
I will run that by Betty to see if she is up for that amount of camera time! 🐓😂
@@rickallman1318 you have to make allowances for city girls like me!
@@CrossTimbersBison ok!
Dusty, you’re a good steward of the land and animals!
Love your chicken, the bison are so well trained when they see you
VERY interesting Dusty!! And the aerial shots gave me a real good idea of what your place looks like there. Nice work. I really enjoy seeing your work there. I feel you are a great steward for the land AND the bison. More power to you man. I wish you continued success. Take care. Blessings of health and happiness to you and yours. Thanks for your work and presentations here. I appreciate it.
I remember seeing this burn first on Arms Family Homestead chanel ..and now I can see what a big difference it has made to the pasture..its amazing to see the difference it has made..learning all the time between CTB and AFH..cow patties burn..🤪🙊💩💩that made me smile..love you carrying Betty with you..she is so friendly..its amazing that after 6 days you still got to watch for fire..🇬🇧💞🙏✝️👍👏🇺🇸
You will be amazed at the transformation of your pasture that you burned. The Bison will love to graze the new pasture grass. I look forward to the videos that will be forthcoming. Thank You for sharing the videos.
Hello from the Black Hills. Home of Custer State Park. We have a saying here "Don't Pet the fluffy Cow"
Loved the video! You all did a great job. I live in town & the firemen used to practice burn on old old homes & buildings. I enjoyed watching that. Glad you went to check & found those two fires & got them put out. Your drone coverage was great also. You do a great job with it. Big Joe & the rest of the bison look good & healthy. Miss Betty looked pretty good with your opening! How many chickens does Brooks have now? Haven't seen her for awhile I assume she is really growing she is a pretty girl. Your going to need to keep the boys away LOL! Sorry so long. Take care see you next time.👍🥰🤗❤👍🙏
Those drone shots are awesome!! That was a huge piece of land to burn!!
Thanks for the overhead view. Alot of work but so necessary. pray for rain now and early spring. lLooks great Dusty.
Dusty, I cannot wait to see the native plants coming up in the spring.
What do you expect to see growing year? And then the year after? I expect that there will be a gradual regrowth - won’t there?
I agree with others - it would be fun to see you start every video with a chicken tucked under your arm! 😂
Thank you, again, for taking us along on your journey.
Blessings and Abundance to you and yours. ❤
Awesome job at taking care of the fire
Amazing video! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything! God Bless
Nicely and Safely done. The before and after looks awesome. Mahalo for sharing. Really an awesome job well done. 😀👍👍
Thanks for more explanation on the burn. I find it all very interesting. It is part of the animal husbandry for the bison. You are so in tune with what they need. Great job. Now I see where Brooks gets her love of chickens😁
Thanks for the update. Hope it all goes as planned. Can’t wait until spring to see the new growth starting. Get job by everyone.
Very educational. Gave a little insight into how some of the forest fires can and do continue to burn and reignite. Love the intro with you holding Betty 😊. I always learn something new when you post your videos. 👍🏻👍🏻🥰🙏
Thanks Dusty. Interesting vlog. Beautiful property.
Awesome video. Cool drone coverage of your controlled burn. 👍🇺🇸👏🏻
If you have access to a rake, it would help to take the burned area. It releases the ash on top and could prevent rekindling of the grasses that might still be smouldering underneath the ash.
LOVED THE “ pre” and “ post “ burn shots!!❤
You all did such a great job on this controlled burn, I’ve enjoyed watching this and learning. Betty the chicken with you was cool, I love to see the dogs & Bison.
Dusty, I’m curious what will you do about the fire ants? That’s worrisome for the animals I’d presume, along with people.
Thank you for sharing the journey.
Hi Dusty. Property is looking good That was a wild burning but you can be proud of everyone involved. Now for a good rain. Great video. God bless and love yall ❤️❤️
Love seeing you carrying the chicken around with you.
Dusty - You have a beautiful piece of land! Perfect for roaming bison!
Love your chicken, nice start to your videos. Things are looking very nice there with the Bison.
Love the music🌬 you play🎼🎵🎶🎶🥁🎻 with your drone shots Dusty.....Thanks👍

I don't think I have ever seen a control burn before . I'm looking forward to seeing the land when it's green . In my minds I see beautiful green pictures qnd beautiful bison grazing there tummies full 😍.
Did you notice that Big Joe knows his name? He turned his head when Dusty called him.
I Love how you all extend yourselves in helping each other!
Thanks for sharing. Love watching y'all.
You can't sneak in on those Bison anymore. Here they come in Dad is coming with Cubes hurry.
I think it looks beautiful! Thank you for helping Mother Nature along!
Betty looks really comfortable with you carrying her around …..😊
Thanks for sharing❤ God bless🐂
That's a really BIG burn Dusty!!! 🔥😣 Looks like you did pretty good keeping it controlled though.👍😊 Going to look so much better come Spring....... can't wait to see it!!! Great video Dusty. Love to you all and God Bless. 🤗🙏💙🕇
Great Presentation Dusty. What an Excellent job u All did. The Fire will burn itself out soon I am sure. U have such a Beautiful Ranch u all have. I must admit the Original Burn I was a little Nervous, but it was exciting to see. Glad that u got the most of it done without any mishaps, great Crew. Thank u for sharing. Keep up the Great Work, just such a Blessing to have All of the Experience there helping!
Good job with the fire. Look forward to see the land in spring.
Blessings 🙌🦬🦬
You have a huge property it Is a Gorgeous piece of land! ! Great job with the burn! You done it correctly!❤️🙏❤️
Great job on the burn…and it looks like you have your bison well trained, lol! ☺️
FYI burns can continue underground via the tree roots. Be vigilant with watching the aftermath of the burn area. No joke.
🙏🙏 for rain! We all need it!
Great video and God bless you all and your family. I am needing to have a burn too. Learn a lot.
It is going to look beautiful come spring. Good thing you went around checking everything. Love your new found chicken friend.
Wow, still burning ... Goodness, good that you are checking this out. Amazing.
Dusty apparently the chickens will be pets also. Pretty funny. The burn just showed me how professional the NRC & Firefighters oversaw an excellent job along with your friends. Amazing how much land you have now. I foresee down the road some happy Bison grazing there. Awesome video, your explanations are great & the drone coverage & music @ the end awesome.
Famous Sidekicks:
Lone Ranger had Tonto.
Roy Rogers had Dale.
Marshall Dillion had Festus.
Does that make Betty your Sidecluck?
the way he said look what i found it's a fire so casually was just like he dealt with that kinda thing everyday and that was what he thought normal was to find a fire in the most randomest of places. that little black hen is the most pampered baby ever being carried like that
Thanks, learned a few things today about fire.
The protected burn was something. Had never seen one, that was huge!!!!!! Thanks for the video. Will keep watching it.❤❤
Thanks Guys
Big Joe is so amazing.. just Majestic..
Hey Dusty 👋🏻 I really enjoy all your videos. When you are talking to us in the selfie mode ~ sometimes you get on such a roll . . . you are looking at us and talking ~ then you whip your head around & point 👉 to something off in the distance & that is where your voice goes . . . way off in the distance . . .and we lose all your words 🙄 then I am getting only half of what you are trying to impart to us 😕 🥰🤗😘♥️
It will be so pretty when it greens up.
I love your bison and what you are doing for them. God bless you Dusty and family.
Thank you Dusty
Cross Timbers Bison 👍💗
AMAZING drone footage. Got a real feel and prospective of what you guys did . WOW!!!!!
Love learning about the thought process that goes into a controlled burn.
Glad you found fire so didnt get out of control you're a good keeper of the land
Good morning Dusty! Good job on getting rid of things on the bison ranch that you do not need and cleaning up that area so in the future it might be a holding pen for new bison or animals that need to be separated for some reason. Thanks for showing that it's not just burn and done, follow up is very important. Hugs from N.C..❤️
Loved the chicken Dusty! Loved the video about the burn. Kinda got warm huh! Glad y’all are safe though. Cedars are fire hazards to me anyway. Love pecan trees. Thanks for sharing with us. Blessings from Oklahoma City Grandmother.
Good to see you return that land to prairie/grassland.
I watched the entire burn. So interesting and I learned a lot. I saw the deer.. some rain would be nice to help smother the burning wood pieces.
