Hey! Good job man! You are right, rubbing that damn paint off took a lot of time but as you can see it was worth in the end haha. I like that people starting to pick up on this modification trend. Keep up the good work, love you!

The vinyl cutter is a great tool. I think yours turned out better. Either way I'm glad you've seen this

@@Gyro1 It is. Later I discovered that using nail polish instead of spay paint gives a very clean edge.

@@Techsas that's a great idea. I'll have to try it next time I'm making these

Where should I find the color plastic display? 3:25

I think it might be possible to black it out more thoroughly, if the screen was optically bonded to the glass surface, like most modern phone screens are. Then the internal reflection between screen and the front glass disappears. There are two ways in which this is done, either with OCA film (optically clear adhesive double-sided tape) or LOCA (liquid optically clear adhesive, UV-cured acrylate).
Unfortunately i can't promise it to be easy. I have tried to use LOCA to remove the internal reflection from a $5 Chinese colour smartwatch, and a bit of LOCA seeped between the internal layers of the screen, which it's still legible, but no longer nice, there's a bit of colour shift and an obvious occlusion and outline wherever it seeped in. Which then it dawned on me that the phone screens made for LOCA bonding are specially manufactured with good sealing all around so that wouldn't happen, and i should have taken some steps to seal the edge of the display somehow, but haven't quite figured out how. The OCA tape isn't necessarily easy either, i think they autoclave it when they use it or something, some kind of pressure chamber, and i don't know what will happen otherwise, whether it won't cure or whether that's to avoid bubbles. You would also need to find something that would bridge the gap between the glass and the screen, some kind of optically clear shim of just the right thickness.
I'm also not 100% convinced that it's worth it, because the LCD might not have quite as much contrast as modern phone/smartwatch panels which are backlit with high-power LEDs and let relatively little light through to begin with. But i thought i'd throw it out there anyway. I'm probably more obsessed about optical bonding than most people, and yet i don't exactly have the determination to figure out the perfect process to bond everything :D
As to the masking, i'd probably have an urge to find someone with a Silhouette and make me a bunch of cut vinyls to use for that, which would also make for alignment help.
I love your build and it made me consider inverting the monochrome screen for a smartwatch i might be building eventually. And of course i'll have an urge to optically bond that one.
