    That was a great video. Thank you. I just turned 67 years old on June 27th and I am retired. I just work a few months a year during tax season, so I appreciate this video. I do have a lot of clothing from years of working in an office but since I do not make that kind of money now, I am looking for cheaper alternative.

    I just *love* you. My mom and her whole side of the family are from Memphis. I've been far from home (Jordan) for ten years this month. Listening to you is chicken soup for my soul. Plus your common sense, youthful spirit and singularly southern groundedness is exceptionally refreshing. Thank you so much for keeping up this cozy and useful and uplifting channel. God bless you from far across the pond.

    You did a great job explaining the tips & tricks of building a wardrobe. I appreciate your take on affordable clothing. I share your love of affordable clothes, and solid colors. My only difference is I live “tiny” so my closet is super small. I have one dresser and a small closet. I buy affordable & slightly higher brands (on sale) and mix the two. I love your tips on “caring” for your clothes which I feel is super important. I have a lint roller, a sweater fuzz remover & a small ironing board & iron to care for my clothing and I hang dry so many things on my shower curtain area. I buy quality t-shirts that fit properly as well, as we live in the desert. I also, appreciated your tips on the shape of your clothing based on your body type. I understand why you wear the neckline you like, it gives you the balance you want. I recently found Sophia Vagara jeans online with Walmart and ordered two pair in a flare leg. They are holding up well. You’re the sweetest and thank you for your great advice & reminders ♥️

    My mum had a lovely "neat" figure and looked so well in a tee and skirt. She would put a Gucci belt around her waist and her big black YSL sunnies and she looked amazing. She swore on splurging on accessories, fresh cottons and linen. She was similar to your style icon Jackie O.

    I love to thrift and have found very expensive finds as cashmere and name brands that I’d never be able to afford at thrift stores. One thing I do is if I see something I want I immediately jump on eBay and find that item for a great reasonable price.

      Thank you Dianne for saying that. I always worry that I either over explain or stumble over my words and don’t get my meaning across. LOL. So thank you for saying that. You know I think our clothes buying is going to fluctuate at different times in our lives. When I was a young mother I barely bought anything because I was at home and just needed my jeans in the winter time and shorts in the summertime. And I had babies that would spit up on me. So it is always good to realize what place you are in your life. I probably should’ve said that. But anyway I appreciate it.♥️♥️♥️

    Hi Melissa, You hit the nail on the head with all of your great tips. If you care for your clothing properly it will last for a long time. I like to shop at the factory outlets and I look for sales at Macy's, Nordstrom. J. Crew, Express to name a few. Target, Kohl's, Old Navy, and H&M are also good. Don't like Walmart clothing though I see many Walmart fashion hauls on TH-cam. Have a happy & safe 4th weekend.

    Great tips!!!
    High-end accessories are worth the investment. You can often find great sales. Having a nice high quality purse, wallet, jewelry, etc. make such a difference. Having one piece that is higher end along with less expensive items works. To me, low quality accessories are a dead giveaway. High quality does not have to be expensive, but sometimes it is. There are also second hand stores and things like that. They often have items that look brand new.

    Melissa, I believe off-the-shoulder tops are still in fashion. I just purchased one from Anthropologie! They are very flattering, especially as you get older, as your shoulders do not age😉 They also cover the top part of my arms (which I rarely show). I am 75, thin and petite, but I have a large bust, so they work to help conceal that, too. If something is "not in style" right now, I know it will be again. I wear what flatters me most.

    Hey sweet lady, you look amazing as usual. I love my off the shoulder tops as well, and have heard many people say they are out of style. However, I have ask some other ladies who have channels, they said no that the off shoulder tops are not out of style, just the ones that are cold shoulder or the ones with straps. Now, not sure anymore, but keep wearing what makes you happy, regardless . The off shoulder tops look nice on you. I also am bigger on bottom, and those shapewear is a miracle.. xoxoxo

Like you, I accent with jewelry, scarves, etc. I also had my colors done 20+ years ago. • @lorainemcgillivray77
    @lorainemcgillivray77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Melissa I also spend more on skincare, then hair and makeup. We wear our face and hair every single day, whereas an expensive outfit is worn fairly rarely tbh. My look is a little different - I'm curvy with a more boho vibe and slightly more eclectic taste. I scour sale rails and online bargain buys, but most of my clothing comes from charity shops/thrift stores. Often the items are brand new with tickets or barely worn. I get some really good stuff and some of it was expensive when the person bought it. I'm fairly clued up on labels and fabrics - cost is not always as indicative of quality, as might be assumed. There are many well cut decent fabric pieces from more mid range brands, many of which I've owned for many years. i love jewellery, leather handbags, scarves and other accessories. Here in Scotland we wear a lot of scarves lol, as the weather is colder here. I volunteer one day a week in a cancer charity shop, so i get first pick and a small staff discount - a great way to add to your wardrobe whilst doing something worthwhile. The only pieces of clothing I will invest in is decent underwear. i'm a fairly large chested woman and a decent bra is an absolute essential for any clothing to look good. I'm the window dresser for the shop so I pay attention to the latest styles, but I dress how I want without that being an overriding concern. I get a lot of compliments on my clothing and asked for an opinion by customers as to what I would suggest for them - so hopefully that's a good sign lol.
    You're very tall, slim and elegant so clothing will always hang well on you and those classic pieces/shapes look fab. My more bohemian look is more flattering on my body shape and I too have learned what suits me over time - colour, cut and style.
    I thought there was a lot of sensible advice given in this video and I also take good care of my clothing, so it lasts. I hope you enjoy all these activities you have planned and best wishes.

    Totally agree about the solid colors, my closet is filled w/ solids, much more time-enduring, classic, and versatile. Patterns are fun but are trended & tend to be more 'dated,' it's fun to kick it up w/patterned shoes, scarves or handbags instead.

    • @Melissa55
      @Melissa55  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like the points that you made in this. Do it with accessories and really you can probably get by on less clothing because with your solids most things will go with each other or can be mixed and matched. Thank you and take care. 🤍🤍🤍

    Most days, head to toe Target for me (including undies, socks,shoes & handbag ) This week added bathing suits and hats for summer.! I always get so many compliments...and it makes me laugh that I'm rocking a $25 handbag! (Less 5%).But you are so right... you need to focus and not haul it all home. I always try to edit and then return things I'm not in love with. My four rules for buying clothes..must fit my limited palette (mainly black and neutrals), must coordinate with something else I already own, has to be my personal style (mostly classic so always in style), and must LOVE IT. And also within budget,but I will occasionally splurge for something special that I know I will wear forever. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Xoxo

    So interesting Melissa. Good info. You are so right about less expensive clothes being thinner in material. Easier to ruin as well. Everything looked very nice on you. Classics are timeless. Also, only wear pieces that bring "joy" while wearing it. I have this one top that I dont like but it's very functional (has a long backside) over shorts, but I dont like it at all. Time to donate it. Enjoy your summer;). See you next time 👏👏👏❤❤🥰🥰🥰

    Marshalls is my go-to, sometimes I can really hit the jackpot, although lately they’re getting too much like Ross (too cheap-looking stuff). Dillard’s has great online sales and clearances, the best costume jewelry. Nordstrom Rack for shoes. I’ll have to start looking at Amazon; why not, we get everything else from them LOL! Do you have a video on your skin care and makeup? I’m 69 and not too bad looking, haha. Those are all some really great suggestions. And sometimes I can get some good deals from ASOS. I do tend to shop online since I live in such a small town that we really don’t have those stores that we can find in a larger place so most of mine does end up online. Oh thank you for that. I do have a skin care video that I did last year and I will link it. I sure appreciate it. m.th-cam.com/video/6j7eJJVYhko/w-d-xo.html

      I love that. And really you prove a great point. Your fashion style will change over the years. As a young stay at home mother I just needed a couple of pairs of shorts and some jeans. And a winter coat. LOL. Then when the kids started school and I worked and was a single mother, I needed to buy more work clothes. So it kind of ebbs and flows over the years I think. I really appreciate your comments so much. Take care and have a great weekend. 🌺🌺😊

    I follow most of the rules you talked about. I do know one rule I follow is about stripes. Less expensive clothing the stripes dont match at the seams. Good quality clothing does. I have Walmart maxi dresses that the stripes match. I have had them several years and look great. I just think if I wear a top or dress with uneven stripes that everyone notices. I love crisp white blouses. Thankx for the great video. I watch you every day

    I tend to think the same way you do Melissa. I do like to spend a little more on skin care but not so much on makeup. I think there are so many inexpensive make up lines out there that work just as well. I could never bring myself to spend $60 or better on an eye shadow palette, I just personally think it’s ridiculous, for me anyway! There are also many clothing lines that are inexpensive that have held up better for me than the higher priced items. I can keep my clothes for years and they still look brand new because I take good care of my clothes (must be the virgo in me) lol! You look lovely in this video Melissa. Hope you have a wonderful weekend sweet lady!❤️

I appreciate you and many thanks. 💝💝💝

    Melissa, thanks for this great video. I agree with your theories, I don't buy a lot of designer fashions, most of my purchases are on the less pricey side.
    A year or 2 ago you showed some beautiful solid color knit blouses (I think they were from an Amazon seller). They had a lovely neckline with narrow bands coming across in an X. (mercy, I'm awful at descriptions, sorry). I ordered them and LOVE them! They aren't expensive. The only drawback is a long delivery time, but I like them so much I don't mind that. Thanks for sharing, you are such a stylish, classy lady!

      I retired in 2016 and what I’ve learned is to think hard about if I really need it, where and how often would I wear it, etc. As I worked from home the last 20 or so years, I mostly wear jeans and T-shirts. Levi’s fit me the best because I like skinny, high-rise jeans and they last longer than any $200 pair I’ve ever bought. One good black pant or skirt suit and dress, and some pearls will take you just about anywhere. (I’m 69 and 95 lbs.) It’s hard to make that work-to-retirement transition in so many ways other than clothing, so best of luck to you.

      If you get basics, for example, at a place like Old Navy or Marshall’s, places like that, then you can put more $ into shoes, and that’s the item that most people will notice first, and a good leather belt that will last for years, a well-designed handbag, everything on sale or discounted, of course. I dream of owning a pair of Gucci loafers, but that will most likely always be just a dream! Oh, and a Gucci robe. Just those two items would run around $2000.

    • @Melissa55
      @Melissa55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cookiesspirit2329 And I think that is wonderful for you to aim for those items. There is nothing wrong with that because these things are things that you really do want. Totally agree about classic patterns. I love to shop Loft and Target but each year they put out trendy patterns that scream where you got them. Thank you sweet Melissa. This video was most informative. I do as you do. I mix and match less expensive items with classic pieces to make an outfit look more expensive than it is. Another tip, I use Rakuten whenever I can. You get cash back, with no gimmick. I find coupon codes, and if there is something I love, I'll wait patiently for it to go on sale. My biggest vice is jewelry. I adore it. I should go through my armoire and see what I haven't used in awhile.

    Are J Crew, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor really expensive? I have a closet full of these and other designer labels, never paid over $10 for any item because I shop exclusively at thrift stores. I only buy brand new underwear, everything else is thrifted. Been at it since 1980, hasn't failed me yet! Of course thrifting is a one shot deal, but I love the fact that each item in the store is one of a kind. Location does matter; we have so many thrift options in NYC that retail shopping is just not necessary! Thanks for these tips!

    I agree totally with you and go shopping with a plan to purchase solids, however I end up buying patterns because I love color, dark colors really drag me down and I'm a plus size woman so patterns can hide a multitude of bumps and lumps. I also buy cheap clothing. The availability of plus sized clothing compared to what's available in regular sizes is a sin.

    I always admire the shoulder-less and boatneck tops on you, but haven’t really tried that style myself. I will have to give it a whirl when we are allowed back in the fitting rooms (all closed currently in the U.K. which makes it really difficult and time consuming as you have to try items at home and then more often than not, go back to the store to return 😫).

      It really has been challenging trying to shop in this current situation. I tend , since I live in a very small town, to buy online from places that will let me exchange. But I have found I don’t have to exchange too often. I will read the reviews and people will say whether it runs true to size, and I will look at their sizing chart which I think has been helpful for me at least. But good luck. It’s a challenge.💜💜💜
