What Is The Gospel? (PART 1)

THE GOSPEL
The English word gospel comes from the “Old English” term gōdspel.
• Gōd: In Old English, gōd means "good."
• Spel: In Old English, spel means "news" or "story."
Together, gōdspel translates to "good news" or "good story."
This Old English term gōdspel was actually a translation of the Greek word euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον).
• Euangelion: In Greek, eu means "good" or "well," and angelion means "message" or "news."
• So, euangelion also means "good news" or "good message” but in Greek.
The Greek word euangelion was later used in Latin as evangelium.
• This Latin term evangelium became the root for English words like evangelist (someone who spreads the "good news") and evangelism (the act of spreading this "good news").
Since the New Testament writers originally wrote in Greek, which was the common language of the Roman Empire at that time, they used euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον) to describe the message of Jesus Christ, applying it to his life, teachings, death, and resurrection.
In the Greco-Roman world, euangelion was commonly used to announce important events, like military victories or the rise of a new emperor. By applying euangelion to Jesus, the New Testament writers were presenting his message as world-altering good news, a proclamation of
The four New Testament books known as the "Gospels" (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) each present the "good news" of Jesus from different perspectives, showing how his coming fulfills God’s promises, reveals his kingdom, and offers salvation.
Basically, gospel means "good news." For Christians, this "good news" is the announcement of hope, redemption, and reconciliation with God through Jesus.
