KAUST Research: How mangroves and seagrasses can help mitigate climate change

  • Dr Carlos Duarte, Professor of Marine Science, explains how researchers at KAUST are helping to better understand how mangroves and seagrasses capture and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
    Blue carbon, or captured carbon dioxide, is stored in the sediment of mangroves and seagrasses in the Red Sea, helping to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide and improve water quality and support other marine ecosystems.
    The high capacity of mangroves and seagrasses to sequester carbon dioxide makes these threatened habitats effective climate change mitigators, and important ecosystems to protect and consider in the circular carbon economy. Learn more at: www.kaust.edu....
