    this is a gem find for me, i just recently got volume 1 and 2 of these books and making one or 2 of the cots for my officers is one of my plans this year.

    This is the best "how to" video I have ever seen. You are an excellent teacher and craftsman. I hope watchers who intend to make one of these cots take heed of all your details. And especially the details about swelling of wood in a natural enviroment with rain, humidity, and wet earth. I know from experience how joints can swell so tight that you cannot force them apart. Also paint the bottoms of the end-grain legs to keep moisture and micro-organisms from being sucked up into the legs and cause rot. Thank you Sir for a great educational video. I did Rocky Mt. Fur Trapper and Rendezvous encampments for 25 years. Mother Nature can be a bitch, so be prepared when those storms rush in over the mountains.

    Nice, I think I either asked about these on one of the streams or heard mention of an upcoming video on there. Very interesting build, and versatile too!

    Volume 2 of that book is surprisingly expensive on Amazon. Luckily, the CC Sutler still has some more reasonably priced copies.

      No lie! I just looked it up myself and holy cow! He has plans for this build on his website for free, including this full chapter ajhamler.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Field_Cot_from_CWW-II.21112127.pdf

    Nice job on the cot. I tried ordering the book you mentioned in October but it got canceled and now it cost over $200 dollars...what's up with that?

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea! After reading the comments, I looked it up and was blown away. Fortunately, I checked AJ Hammler's website and he has free plans for the cot there. If you search for Marcy Cot Civil War, you can even find the entire chapter from the book from Hammler's website.

    One day I plan to go camping with all this straight up gear, the tent , the cot , the everything...

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try going lighter on the gear and go straight bivouac. When it's nice out, I just use my ground cloth, wool blanket, and my knapsack for a pillow. If it gets chilly I might even use my shelter half as an extra blanket. It's a lot of fun. We have some pics of us doing just that on our website.

    Thats nice that you are honoring his work! But where do you get the book? I have not found it available!

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's gone out of print and really expensive, too. If you look through the comments, I found a link Hammler posted with plans and shared. You might also be able to search "Hammler Marcy Cot" and find the plans.

      I was just on his site and he seems to think that the publisher is going to be republishing both books an a single volume in the near future, he also said that when they do he was going to add some additional projects to it as well! So here is hoping it is soon!

    You should add the out take stuff now. His book is out of print with no idea if it will be again, and people are selling it for $300 plus.......and he's not seeing any of that money.
    pretty sure he wouldn't mind anyone giving all the information away and making those prices drop to almost nothing.

    If you had to put a number on it, based on your craftsmanship, how big a person do you think that cot could hold?

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. This one held me and I'm about 230 pounds. There are a couple things you could do to make it even sturdier regardless of weight. You can use thicker canvas such as 12 or even 15 oz canvas. You can get that at Big Duck Canvas online. This build was within a budget so I used pine rails but hardwood would be even better. If you found it still flexed too much you can add a center leg to each of the rails to help with weight distribution.

    Was that placed in an officers tent

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would have been a private purchase item and would have been most likely found in an officer's tent. It's known as a Marcy Cot.

    what is your opinion on c&c sutlery

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My opinions sort of go for most sutlers...it depends on what you're looking for. Many sutlers do sell quality gear from reputable makers, you just have to know what to look for. Many sutlers cater to mainstream reenactors, which is fine but typically don't make them differ from each other very much. I've bought an item or two from them in the past and have been pleased with their prices and customer service. Figure out what you're looking for and ask reenactors you respect, "where can I get the best....." and they can usually point you in the right direction.
