    This is a brilliant coaching video on pace bowling. I am highly suspicious of a lot of what is taught these days, but this is spot on. Congratulations to McDermott and CA.

      well there are a lot 'coaches' out there who are just hacks. whether in tennis, football, mountain biking, whatever. they're just out to make some money giving bad advice. McDermott the real mccoy.

      Tavjot Singh when you have a new ball and both sides are shiny how do you figure out which one is shinier one

    • @ahmedshinwari
      @ahmedshinwari 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Ahmed Mamundzai, I think you are confusing seam swing with rough-surface swing. During a cricket match, the ball condition changes into three distinct phases. In each phase you will require technique specific to the phase to swing the ball.
      Phase 1 (New Ball):
      In the beginning of the match the ball is new and shiny. This ball can swing in EITHER direction. The bowler use the seam position to swing in or out. There is no rough surface so it does not matter which side of ball you grip. What matters is the angle of the seam at the point of delivery. The ball will swing towards the angle of the seam.
      Phase 2 (slightly worn out):
      After 10 or 15 overs, the ball no longer remains shiny on both sides. At this stage, the fielding team chooses a side of the ball that they want to maintain shine on and discard the other side. This when maintained well will leave one side of the ball shiny and the other a bit rough. Now, the ball will swing towards the rough side. (Tip: That does not mean the seam based swing no longer works in the second phase, it still works and a smart bowler will make use of both to either amplify swing or to delay it).
      Phase 3 (completely worn out):
      After 35 overs, the ball no longer has the shine it had from second phase. The shine is very little and no longer swings because of counter rough side. At this stage, the fielder maintain the shiny side still by applying natural fluid (sweat & saliva) on the shiny side. The aim is no longer to maintain shine but to keep one side wet so that it becomes heavier and the other side scuffed and lighter. Now, the ball is ready for reverse swing. The ball will swing towards the direction of 'shine/wet' side. Note, for this reverse swing to happen the minimum speed is 135kph. Any less than this, ball may not swing or may swing conventionally i.e., slight swing towards shiny side.

    Only thing I question is the difference in follow-through for inswing vs outswing. I play club third 11 standard and swing the ball big (not at any real pace), main problem I have is that my outswingers have become much better in recent years (used to only swing it in) but I'm now less confident in my inswing. If it's going I don't bowl an inswinger very often as it tends to drift down leg, so if my right arm follows through to finish by my right leg surely this will just take it further down legside?
    Good video though.

      Wrist position is very important, keep it all the way back and bring it in while release. Also, make sure you generate lot of force from your hips by rotating them before you swing your arm. Practice and then attend to finger positions on the ball.
