Ps: at the beginning, that instant they start talking about pants after a short grave silence, i think is at 9nce humorous and tragic. I still feel like, it was not about them being totally void of sense of gravitas, but about them consciously deciding to ignore the ugliness of the world they are in, to be able to survive war.

As an employer, that excuse is so common from a certain type of people. The connection between this sketch concept and reality is spot on. It is both hilarious and sad, as some will use any excuse to get off work or education. This damages their careers so they become a self fulfilling prophecy. In the late 70s, I lost ONE day of school due to (potentially lethal) heatstroke and missed out on learning how to read Roman Numerals, so to this date, I cannot, and whilst not an important subject on a grand scale of things, it is a nuisance, so missing out on more important subjects like maths and English can be a career changer.
Anyway, super comedy duo, probably one of the most innovative ever.

@Boring Name Hmm, most of the British pilots would have been at least middle class, at least in the first years. There were apparently 145 Polish pilots and they flew in Polish squadrons so the radio conversations could stay in the language they spoke best.
The joke is quite simply that in all the B&W films of the war, the RAF characters always spoke posh. So the disconnect between their appearance here and talking like they is yoof is funny.
