New motorhome for 2023! The very thin Chausson S514

- The Chausson S514 is a rather revolutionary motorhome in as much as it is narrower, shorter and less expensive than a classic low profile motorhome. It offers the same structure and insulation as a low profile with a size closer to that of a campervan, although at 208cm it is not quite as narrow as a campervan. The vehicle offers sleeping for two with the option of a bed for a third person.
There are two versions, the S514 First Line S514 Sport Line, the details for which are shown below.

I also show some of the places I have visited in Europe in my own motorhome, as well as the places you can stay at! I try to give as much coverage as I can to official campsites and free places which I use for overnighting. Therefore you can find here the aire or stellplatz that you are possibly looking for.

We bought one of these in March 2022. It’s been a brilliant layout for the 2 of us. Especially the butterfly bed, not highlighted here. We added rechargeable reading lights and a microwave at the back. Storage is amazing for such a small van, plenty for a 4 week European tour. We appreciated the 2.1m width and 170 bhp engine on roads in the Scottish Highlands and in the Pyrenees. Also saved on fuel and much easier to park than our previous vehicle. 4500 miles in, we could not be happier 👍🏽

Really chuffed to read this first-hand opinion Sam. I live in the Cairngorms and motorhomes/vans are everywhere like rabbits. For so long I've deliberated and procrastinated waiting for the right one to come into view and I've chosen Chauson now. Thanks so much Sam, really glad that you get on with it happily - any other tips I'd love to hear. I'm away to find a Scottish (?) dealer.

Always loved the compact dimensions of a van for driving and parking, but could never live with the narrow width of a standard van width since I'm 6'2 and need a proper length mattress. So this mini-motorhome seems to be the best of both.

I’m collecting mine brand new on Thursday this week December 2022 , I also had the one next to it x550 black and white , I got it March 2022 and took it for 3 months around Europe . Brilliant quality and style the chausson with the high end price . For longer trips I fancied the permanent bed and more storage hence the change

it's not only interesting Alan, it's amusing too. I find it a bit disconcerting, the way bits fall off these things. It is nice, although I would prefer if the bed were lower, or could go up and down. How could I get my aging Labrador on that bed? The fact that I neither have my aging Lab anymore, or the money to buy this, is neither here not there. Thanks Alan.
Amanita, I could not even get my Tosia to go into the van for the last 18 months of her life. When she could not manage, I started to help her but when she would not co-operate it was a problem. A friend who has a four bedroomed house is now sleeping on the sofa as the dog cannot manage the stairs!

@@VanlifewithAlan Thanks, Alan. We’re stoked. It’s a long story. We have been watching your videos for years. However, we intended to purchase a van and contract a company to do the conversion. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any automatic van here in Spain and failed to order one either(we didn’t receive any sort of feedback after one and half years since placing the order with a Ford dealer). We finally decided to shop an autocaravana. Since we could only drive automatic(guilty, moving from the States), it’s quite an effort to finally this one. Thrilled! We watched your video over and over again before we decided to fly out to Valencia to see it in person at the dealer. Now, we’re ready to pick it up.
Would like this one more if it wasn't so basic inside, I think the sleeping area needs a larger or additional window. I do like the idea of sitting up in bed with a cup of tea, something that can be difficult with the overhead storage on most.
I think I have changed my sitting up in bed position since moving into a van. However I have not yet found the overhead storage to be a problem!

Alan do you know if this 514 sport edition and the Challenger version are available to buy in righthand drive in the UK please, I can find no information on the Internet with either websites? Thank you.
As far as I know Tim, and I could be wrong, and I cannot ask the dog as she is dead, this is not available in Challenger in RHD at all and, at present, on Chausson it is not available. I seem to recall someone saying something in the 2025 version might be possible.

Is the gas cabinet under the little extra seat? I think this is a brilliant layout for a couple. Very similar to the Winnebago Ekko that came out a couple of years ago. Of course because it's America, it was loaded down with a black tank, television sets and an enormous gasoline powered generator
Robert, I think the gas cabinet is under the kitchen but I can't remember now - normally I show the gas cabinet in my videos, however my performance was impaired by some wine given to me just before I filmed this. I don't know the Winnebago Ekko so I can't comment. We have televisions here too - but not so much generators and black tanks!

You will recognize the "German Layout," and you will also likely chuckle they are so impressed with its "huge gear garage" so standard in European motor coaches. But what's really special (besides the Frankencoach interior design) is the fact that Winnebago shipped the first examples of their new model with a shower that leaked water on the inverter. Can you say, "fire hazard?" 😆
Oh, almost forgot...the Ekko also lists for over $100,000 more than this Chausson!! It has all wheel drive, A/C (air con, I believe you call it), a 50 gallon water tank, and a lithium battery. But I still haven't worked out why motor coaches cost so much more in the US than in Europe. Is it additional safety equipment? Tariffs/government subsidies? I don't yet understand.
@@truthseeker9454 yeah, the price of any campervan in the States is outrageous anymore. Even the most basic vehicle is going for $150,000+ these days.
I’m picking up my s514 sport line on Thursday this week 14th dec 2022 and it’s 64k pounds . I’m having air con fitted with a generator and lithium battery inspired by the Winnibego ekko for my trips to Spain and Morrocco . Very similar vehicles with an very unsimilar price

Given the market for these is older people, why don't they fit a electric rising step using a linear actuator. Lifting you up to enough to get into bed. They usually have a false floor to hide the mechanism.
That is really good idea, which I had never thought of. I will bring it up with Lippert Components when I see them next - which is not likely to be for another 11 months!
I’m 52 and perfect for me . I don’t see them for older people , more like younger people wanting to whizz up and over the alps in an agile vehicle or park in the busy streets of Paris with the narrow body and save on high cost hotels

The problem Nicola is that it might require a complete rewire if you do it yourself. That was what I had to do!
