  • Since last December we've been living in Mexico! We've spent the majority of our time living in the state of Yucatan. Both in the center, in a small city called Valladolid, and in the biggest city in the state, Mérida.
    We wanted to break down EXACTLY how much our living expenses were for one month in Valladolid and one month in Merida. We used receipts and bank records to find exact info and averages. Hopefully, anyone thinking of moving to Mexico finds it helpful!
    Thanks for watching! We don’t currently have a Patreon but if you enjoyed our content and would like to buy us a cup of coffee, here’s a link to our PayPal tip jar!

    We only cover living expenses that are relevant to everyone and left out optional things like tourist attractions and excursions. Check out our 'What Things Cost in Mexico' video for more specifics on individual items.
    In this video, we covered rent and utilities, as well as tips on locating apartments and criteria you should look for. We also covered what a few other people are spending with different budgets than our own. We covered trash pickup, water, and utilities. We also show some brief apartment tours, you'll find some more of that in our 'What Things Cost Video' as well.
    Other expenses we went over are groceries, transportation, and (debatably optional) eating out and 'drinking' out. ;)
    We've included lots of other tips and info that we think you'll find helpful if you're already living in Mexico or planning to move here as an ex-pat, immigrant, migrant, digital nomad, etc.
    For those of you that saw our Expat Life in Merida, Mexico video...you know all about our #pantyproblems, haha! :D In this video, we also cover an update to that problem, and now we're absolutely loving the lavanderias!
    This is a video we got quite a few requests for! We hope you enjoy this video and don't forget to subscribe, comment, and like if you do! We'd love to hear from you.

    I like your video. About the lavanderia, I saw tangerine travels speaking about that and my reaction was what?! Other youtuber in Merida also mentioned not by name but he also thought that that was weird as he takes his clothes to the lavanderia. Please don't believe too much in what other youtubers say.
    Other misinformation that some youtubers are saying or repeating is that merida is safe because of a pact among organized crime gangs. Not true at all, merida is safe because they've given continuity to head of police. Some of those officers have been there for almost 30 years.
    Last one thing, I would suggest that you start knowing the state that you are in. Mexico is also a Union. In fact the official name of Mexico is the United Mexican States. So every state has its own state rules and so on. But the most important is that the economic situation of every state is also different so your cost of living will vary from state to state.

    So cool. I am an old guy 62. For years I have vacationed in Mexico from Merida to Sonora. Central Mexico
    all over. Two months ago I got my permanent residence and live with my Mexican wife in Mexico City. I had planned coming here so long and it has exceeded my expectations. Just found your channel and will be watching with interest where you go and what you do. Like you I am surprised more people don't retire here. I don't know about the digital jobs and all that but for a retiree it is great. In Mexico you can pick your expenses. In the US some places price you out. In Mexico you can live like a local and save or if you want and can afford more that works too. People ask me about seeing my kids but if I had retired in Florida or Arizona as many do I would be a plane ride away. Mexico City has flights to all the major cities in the US so its the same thing.

    San Cristobal is on our short list of cities to retire to in 3 years. We LOVE cool weather so that eliminated Merida and many others.
    We hear San Cris is always cool, safe, lots to do, and inexpensive even by Mexican standards. So, we are curious to hear what yall think. Thx !

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's awesome! You'll absolutely love the weather. It's been 40s/50s at night and in the morning and mid-70s during the day the whole time so far. Another thing you'll like about it here is the food scene! A lot of vegan and vegetarian options here. Every single restaurant we've eaten at so far has had a vegetarian part on the menu. They also have a very international food scene. We've seen Thai food, multiple Indian food restaurants, Italian, Medeterrian, etc.
      It's not a perfect place, like anywhere else. It probably lacks a lot of big, big city ammenties for one thing. At least Tuxtla is nearby though. (45 minutes to an hour and much hotter weather).
      But we've found it to be an absolutely beautiful setting with mountains all around, gorgeous waterfalls close by, nice arts and crafts, great markets, amazing people. We've felt very safe and accepted here. Restaurant prices and local shopping have been fantastic and some of the most affordable we've seen in Mexico. Our Airbnb's have been a bit higher but that's probably just because it's been Holy Week.
      Highly recommend this city for sure!

      Speaking of cooler places I was looking for one also. I'm a single 🇺🇸 military veteran on a pension but I'm a minimalist. All I need is a small studio bed place to cook and a bathroom. I was going to Baguio City philipines but if the prices are comparable San cristobal would be an option since I know coffee and cigarettes are also cheap there thx.

    This is such a great insight into life in Mexico and the realities of living there. What work do you guys do online? 🤓
    We generally haven't been able to drink the tap water in the countries we've been visiting and buying water can get very expensive 😅 we totally appreciate drinking water from the tap when we can 😂 we love the fact that Mexico seems so walkable, we really enjoy exploring new places by walking, running, cycling...
    The taxis sound so reasonable as well!? 🤯
    Must be so nice to eat out so much, the food sounds delicious 🤤 we are currently in Georgia and we have been blown away by the food here 🤯 needless to say we've been eating out A LOT 😂
    Too many tequilas 😂 we really hope to come to Mexico someday and it would be so fun to meet up with you guys 🤩
    Shame we laughed SO much when you were talking about your laundry experiences 😂😂 glad everything is in order again and you guys get to take ALL your clothes 😂 how cool that you can find groceries and even a laundry so close to where you live! That is good to hear! It’s definitely a different lifestyle than we’re used to! We both do multiple things online to bring in money but for our stable income, I (Lauren) have been working for a U.S. jewelry company for years and now I work for them virtually and Seth does freelance marketing work. I swear I’ll never look down on drinkable tap water again 😂 you don’t realize how handy it is until you are trying to cook or wash fruit off lol. Yes! Taxis are so affordable which is something we love coming from a country where you can’t find a taxi cheaper than 20 USD 🤦🏼‍♀️ we really do love eating out but with that being said we need to start cooking food ourselves if we wanna save money but it’s just so hard when the food here is so delicious lol. I am interested in hearing more about the food in Georgia! I can’t really say that I know a lot about that country but I definitely want to learn more! Glad we have you guys a laugh with the laundry situation! It’s been a whole ordeal for us LOL. I’m so glad things are in order now as well 😂

    $50 is super expensive for a garrafon of water fyi. You maybe have discovered this by now. We pay $15 per and $15 flat for delivery no matter how many refills we need. Awesome neighbourhood you stayed in in Merida! We've booked places where hosts said great wifi, then not. Careful. Great advice to join Facebook pages of places you want to go. OMG....the frappes! Merida is a very cheap place to live currently. Glad you figured out the laundry! Last time hubby went to the barber it was $100 mxn and took 90 minutes. They are great! Six block walk here in my Mexican neighbourhood and I can get everything I need. Good content guys! - Anne

    • @laurenandseth

      That is good to know! Now that's more like it, awesome price! Yeah for sure, the wifi issue is a pain sometimes. That is awesome that the barber took 90 minutes, that precision is amazing! That's so cool that you're only six blocks from all you need, that is why it's going to be so difficult for us to adjust if we ever have to permanently move back to the US. :) Thank you!

    That's really cool you can have a monthly booking. I was curious about the wi fi you were getting there. When I lived in the Philippines and Africa we had to boil all our water. So it is much easier with those jugs. You are in civilization when you are by Walmart. Didn't realize you guys were working also. Makes sense since most people are remote right now. That's nice you can eat out and it is much more affordable than here in the States. That's a good story about underwear rejection. I thought you guys were just picky. Nice hair cut. First thing I noticed was clean shaven Seth.

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wifi can be spotty! So far we have made sure all of our places had wifi and the biggest problem sometimes is the download and upload speeds but other than that we're able to get our work done! We have boiled water here too before cooking with it. We have already gotten used to the water situation because we didn't drink tap water that much back in the U.S. so now we make sure to get those big jugs of water so we never run out lol. HAHA I'm glad you know now that we are not picky! At first, we were legitimately concerned that it was disrespectful but I'm so glad people reached out and told us to do it. Seth will be happy to read that's the first thing you noticed! He has been eager to get a haircut for a while now and it finally happened!! 😄

      @@pablerry I've seen some pretty good deals in Merida too. I was talking to a fella about a house we seen for sale and I said I bet they're asking a hundred fifty thousand he said in this neighborhood 30000 we looked into it he was right, had to have been at least 3000 square feet, awesome house. I've also seen people paying 1500 a month for a lot less in Merida. But also they rented that vallodolid house for just a month. One heck of a deal, plus I like valladolid better. Merida is too big for me.

That's awesome to hear that you're planning to visit again.😊 Although we can't speak from experience we have met quite a few people that moved to Mexico or visited for an extended trip with their dogs and haven't had any problems. If you're driving in it will be easier to get around but we have seen dogs on buses before and you can always hire a driver instead of taking public transportation. Hope that helps!

    I just got back from visiting Merida, Valladolid and El Cuyo (the most beautiful beach I have ever seen). My husband is retiring in 5 years so we’re planning on moving to Merida or Valladolid. Lived my entire life in the states but some of my ancestors are from Mexico so my Spanish is pretty good, a group of friends came with me for a week and we had the best time, but I felt discriminated by the natives as soon as I would tell them I was Mexican their attitude would change and treat us bad. I asked a taxi driver and he explained to us that because we are white with blonde hair the natives don’t really like Spaniards that colonized their territory. I was sad to be treated this way but I understand their point of view. I still want to move to Merida in the future.

    I have the same experience with the haircut price, I went down to my nieces quincenera from WA state to Sonora, MX and told my brother I needed a hair cut (he's from sonora). He and I both needed haircuts to attend his daughters quincenera. So he took me to an awesome barber and when I finally asked him how much was my total for both of us, he said, $200 pesos ($10 usd). I seriously just ended up giving him 500 pesos ($25 USD) ($ 200 + $300 peso tip) because I am used to paying $40 USD here in Washington, I just couldn't see myself not giving this barber double what he charged me. We were looking fresh to my niece's party lol

    • @laurenandseth

      We bank with Navy Federal Credit Union, so we get ATM fees refunded. So we frequent ATMs and try to use cash a lot. Because using your card also gets you a International Transaction Fee. Our bank doesn't refund International Transactions Fees and those can add up. Some credit unions and cards will refund both though, so in the future we'll probably seek one out and start using that.

      So far, for me, Seth, my favorite city in Mexico is Puebla. Lauren's #1 is San Cristobal de Las Casas.

    Do you run into a lot of other Americans doing the same thing? How do you pull money out of your American bank account so you have cash to convert to pesos? Can you show us on a map of Mexico where these places are that you are living? And if deep in Mexico, why you didn’t select a town closer to the border? Also what about health care? Do either of you speak fluent Spanish? Can you be there indefinitely on a tourist visa? Do the vendors approach you about wanting to set up water jug service or do you have to know where to go to get it set up? Seems like you’ve been really lucky. Other videos depict bucket showers and more run down apartments for same price.

    How are they there with masks? Is it do as you want or do they enforce much?

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're pretty enforced in Merida and the whole Yucatan state. To the best of my knowledge they are currently required. Especially going into businesses, but 99.99% of people wear them even out on the street. However, I did see a lot of people when out walking or jogging pull the mask down to their chin in the 90+ degree weather.
      Totally varies by state though, for instance we were just in Chiapas (San Cristobal de las Casas, Tuxtla, and Palenque) and I'd say less than 40% wore them, as it was optional, not mandatory, but most indoor businesses still require them. We're in Oaxaca now and I'd say about 50% of people are wearing them, also not required here.
      Mexico has a color system which mandates each state based on how it's going there, it changes fairly often. Check the website out for it (link below), they update regularly and you can keep track of which states are completely open and all that. Cheers!
