Breakfast at Tifanny's was the best thing Audrey Hepburn ever did!! She was perfect in this role. I love the part where she sings "Moon River" with the guitar! This movie is just classic... all I gotta say is that they better never remake this thing..it's perfect just the way it is!!
Marilyn would have made the character obvious, because of Audrey we don't feel that this story is about an adult theme. Even a child could watch it, she gave the character a sense of innocence. Marilyn would have made it just sexy. There's more to a character than acting sexy. Audrey was a goddess, we will never have another actress like her again.
menukjau that’s so true a lot of people watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s at a very young age I myself first watched it when I was 10 and only realised that Audrey was meant to be playing a call girl when I read Capote’s novella. Audrey made the character much more likeable
If you read the book, Truman clearly got inspiration from Marilyn (who was his real life friend). Marilyn only seemed “too obvious” because she was typecast all the time....which you also made the mistake of doing to her. Anyone who’s done an ounce of research into Marilyn knows how much that hurt her and how complex she was. Holly was never meant to be innocent. She openly curses in the book. Holly from the movie doesn’t seem to come from a poor country background at all.
Marilyn would've been too much. While Audrey wasn't an innocent little lamb, she appeared that way, making the character of Holly Golightly more tragic and adorable. She made her one of the most complex characters of all time.
I read, and listen, Audrey a Duch girl who escaped Holland, at the 2nd world war, and as a driver the Duch people ar great, Holly was indeed a, high class hooker, .
Audrey was a treat, but Breakfast at Tiffany's, specifically Holly Golightly, really wasn't the film for her. Most she's done is revolutionize fashion trends, especially for slimmer and leaner women. I understand the image is what contributed to the complexity of the character, but it would have been more interesting if Audrey would be at least more shocking here. She was still looked at as someone elegant, and (god forbid) emulated...which wasn't exactly the point of her character. There's a reason why Marilyn Monroe would have been the perfect casting. It's perfect for Audrey because the story in the movie is completely different from the book.
The opening ...when she's standing at Tiffany's Window in that Black Evening Gown, you can see just how Delicate she was...Just Perfect Delicate Beauty.
This is very interesting to see. It's neat to see the makings of a movie and the work that was involved in making it. Audrey Hepburn's influence will never be forgotten by those of us that love and admire her. God Bless Her.

Ive read that Marilyn Monroe was difficult to work with, unlike Audrey. And Capote even says Holly is more of a geisha. So not the sexy type. I think Audrey was perfect actress for this role!
Bollocks. If you read the novella it's very obvious Holly Golightly is a man-eater. She gets what she wants and gives them what they need, then leaves for the next opportunity. The scenarios of both the film and the book make sense in this context. Audrey Hepburn does a wonderful job, but Marilyn Monroe would have won an Oscar for this role.
Women 65 and Over, I think that is unfair. Marilyn did have a natural sex appeal but she was more than that. She could tap into a well of sensitivity and vulnerability. I love Audrey and what she brought to the role and every role she did but Capote wrote the book and he didn't feel Audrey was right for the part. He wanted Marilyn and knew her. They were friends.
@@peteradaniel the thing is, if Marilyn had played it, as wonderful as she could have been, the censors would have been all over the film and it would have been more difficult to get shit past the radar, resulting in a possibly even more sanitized version, or, worse, Marilyn's Holly being punished in the end for being a sexually-liberated woman like Elizabeth Taylor's prostitute character in Butterfield 8 is killed off in the year before this movie. Audrey playing it, though, could get away with more due to being coded as a "nice girl" and proprietous. Audrey was the only one who could play this type of character without being killed, punished, or humiliated in the end. Her performance here is important for this reason in that it progressed the image of women in film. "Look! It's okay to be a single woman with an active sex life and agency because Audrey, a 'nice girl,' is doing it!"

I really don't think Yunioshi even adds anything to the story. It would be a better movie if his scenes were left out. It's a classic example of how tastes change- in 1961 most people didn't care but not those scenes are unwatchable.
They didn't need to in those days. People used their imaginations. Now they have to show everything. I'm tired and bored of watching sex scenes in movies. They use to be able to imply it and not have to show everything that is so obvious. This generation behaves like they invented sex.
Audrey Hepburn did to what the world considered sexy in film what Kate Moss did in fashion. Both came along when what was considered beautiful (from Marilyn Monroe for Audrey to the Supermodels for Kate) and both were attacked for being too skinny and being the wrong image for young people. Yet both these little girls changed the world's view.
Opinions Please: I've never seen this movie, but it seems to be very popular. Should I rent the DVD, or should I try to find it online? I ask, 'cause of the quality reasons... if the movie is really as good as people say, then I'd prefer to watch a good quality version, thanks!
Truman Capote should consider himself very lucky that they used Audrey instead. Since M.M. would have cheapened the role. And not given that classic air that Holly displayed.!!
I wish they had made 2 versions. The brilliant one w/Audrey/Peppard & Blake Edwards. Another with Marilyn directed by somebody else. The mind reels how steamy it could have been.
Not at all. “Pretty Woman” is about a hooker who emotionally rescues a rich man as much as he rescues her. The George Peppard character didn’t need rescuing like the Richard Gere character did. Moreover, the Julia Roberts character didn’t struggle with the psychological defenses that the Audrey Hepburn character did. The latter was avoidant of an intimate relationship whereas the former wanted one. Last, the Julia Roberts character had to be transformed from a trashily-dressed hooker into one of style, whereas the Audrey Hepburn character was already elegant and chic from the very first scene.
that director is Blake Edwards (Julie Andrews' husband). He's not bitter he's telling the truth. He's ashamed he mocked Oriental people by casting Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi (and rightly so..) Otherwise he's famous for the Pink Panther series as well as Victor Victoria. He's a master.
@xXPinkGoddessXx But it's not just or only about what was implied but not shown. Attitudes toward sexuality (and women) were much narrower during that era, regardless of how much the audience saw. My point was that Hepburn was obviously given the role to ensure that audiences would embrace and root for Holly, not condemn her. Audrey Hepburn was so enchanting a screen presence that it was easy, especially in 1961, to forget just how Holly made her living.
You are the first I have encountered with this opinion. Although I disagree, I am excited to know more about your point of view, I am not looking for a debate, just to see from a different angle. Would you mind sharing with me please?
@@Willow_Sage_ What I liked about the opening scene: It's dawn. The camera angle on the deserted 5th avenue directs all your attention towards the lone, approaching taxi. The beautiful score by Henry Mancini music swells as, what appears to be, an elegant (and perhaps wealthy) socialite emerges from the vehicle and begins eating a truck driver's breakfast. Somethings night right here. Who is she? She looks a little goofy. Why is she wearing sunglasses? She window shops at Tiffany with no intention of buying anything. "Hey, baby, what's going on here?"
@@Willow_Sage_ What I didn't like about this movie: The plot was thin and scattered. The Buddy Ebsen character, Doc Golightly, came and went like the plot convenience that it was. The audience didn't need a lecture about trying to capture "wild things". I also didn't buy the premise that a young, level-headed writer could fall so desperately in love with a callous, disorganized, self-centered woman who constantly lives above her means. I don't believe that opposites attract when it comes to serious relationships. And then there was all that nonsense about the cat. The scene in the taxi with the cat in the rain was about as subtle as being lectured to by a rapper with a megaphone. I confess that I did not read the Truman Capote novella but it is the Blake Edwards movie that we are talking about. Blake Edwards has done much better work.
I read somewhere that "SHE WOULD NEVER BE KNOWN AS MISS DIAMONDS". When Tiffany's asked her if she would consider being a representative of their company.
so why did holly drove out the cat because she thinks she was like the cat..nameless and wild and chicken..and she hates it...but when she finds the cat it means she had finally accepted who she was even though shes a soaking nameless cat and realized...hey,its not a bad thing to be.
i did'nt know that Marilyn was the first priority for this film. I have nothing against audrey, she's bautiful and all but it just makes me wonder if the role would've been done by marilyn. It would've been one of her greatest films.. Anyway, i both love those two classic beauties. All we have now is someone like nicole kidman :(
(continued) Also I suspect the character and story made Paramount nervous (this was 1961, after all) and so--in addition to her beauty and many gifts--Audrey was preferred because (as they're all saying in the doc) her unique persona would distract the audience from who Holly really was--I agree with the observation that 1961 audiences probably left the theatre not realizing Audrey had played a hooker. No doubt the fear was that Marilyn's sexiness might have given the game away.
Although I am a HUGE fan of both audrey and marilyn, I still see audrey doing to part. She puts more spunk into the character, Marilyn wouldv'e been more lighthearted, more sad. Marilyn had a better on screen look, but Audrey made the character into a lengend
I'd be interested to see a different interpretation - one that stays more true to Capote's novella. Not saying there's anything wrong with this film, it's possibly my favourite film ever.... I'm interested to see what it'd be like to adapt the Novella straight.

I'm glad they made the comments about the miscasting of Mickey Rooney, and the broad strokes given to the character he played. It is regrettable, the only cringeworthy part of an otherwise good movie. But those were the times.
From long ago learning that art term, from art contexts. But if you want Web definitions and sources: first, at Urbandictionary, "being so extreme that it has an amusing and perversely sophisticated appeal." And at Wicktionary, "from the French slang term 'se camper,' meaning 'to pose in an exaggerated fashion.'" Not "parody," as that is a satiric rework of a song. Mickey Rooney in the film Moon River enacts, not sings.
Escorts, if your lucky enough to find a good one are far better than having a girl friend. Much cheaper too. Emotionally, financially and in other obvious ways that don't need to be mentioned here. Find a good one you can see on a regular basis. Respect them and they will follow in return.
How such a wonderful film has one of the most racist scene in Hollywood . Ironic! Breakfast at Tiffany is still one of the classics . Good and bad ! Really smh on Asian character scene ..... just absolutely horrific and cringe !
I remember watching this commentary on the directors cut dvd thinking the same thing when Blake Edwards says this! I think George was perfect! He has that “could care less… just here bc im here” air about him but at the same time gives off that subtle good guy innocence and curiousity that says “actually I do care quite a bit and iʻll stay till the end in case you need me” which is exactly what I got from his portrayal and exactly how I think the character was meant to be. So, in my book George was the perfect fit.
Blake Edwards had to put the points on the i's to Audrey Hepburn. But Marilyn Monroe would definitely have driven him crazy. And at that time he didn't have Julie Andrews to calm him down, so he would have maddened.
@JudgeJulieLit did you get that definition from the Internet? What you are describing is a parody, not camp as you said. Besides a comic strip is not by definition camp, it can be, but not usually. Also, the insertion of this character serves no purpose, but a base and low appeal to comedy; in fact, even the director (if you actually paid attention to the video, you would've heard saying) regrets putting this character in the movie. This character actually detracts from the movie.
The film was ruined, for me anyway, by Mickey Rooney's dreadful Japanese character. I have to fast forward as soon as he appears. Apart from that, it's terrific. George Peppard is one of my favourite actors, and Ms. Hepburn is sublime.
A great documentary on the movie...I too would have liked to have seen a true Japanese actor instead of Micky Rooney...but he took the part and went with it....
wow, really? that was NOT camp. Do you know what "camp" means?? Though I am not belittling the film, the Japanese character is a straight out, obvious, stereotype of a Japanese men. You said so yourself, it's a "caricature," and not funny or amusing at all. It's actually very stupid, nonsensical, and embarrassing. The film is obviously not perfect.
rockyraaacoon The film was perfect and a classic and withstands the test if times. Blake Edwards outdid himself w ea role cast. We needed the roke mickey rooney played for comic relief.
@NaturalBornHedonist She would have been a miscast, if she had to play the role like Audrey did. Especially in this Generation. It makes me tear to death
great!!
2020? Who's watching while on quarantine
They didn't need to in those days. People used their imaginations. Now they have to show everything. I'm tired and bored of watching sex scenes in movies. They use to be able to imply it and not have to show everything that is so obvious. This generation behaves like they invented sex.
I haven't seen some of this film.....but I remember her for her Clothes ...& Classy look & Yes I know Tiffany's..XXX.& of course I know yhe Song 🎵 XXX
I loved her she was so beautiful inside and out... I've only dreamt of having a woman with such the personality, courage and perction
I am interested if Blake Edwards ever made any comments anywhere concerning Audrey Hepburn vs. Julie Andrews in the casting of My Fair Lady ?
Audrey Hepburn did to what the world considered sexy in film what Kate Moss did in fashion. Both came along when what was considered beautiful (from Marilyn Monroe for Audrey to the Supermodels for Kate) and both were attacked for being too skinny and being the wrong image for young people. Yet both these little girls changed the world's view.
PopeFlores, what an interesting observation! Couldn't agree with you more!
Opinions Please:
I've never seen this movie, but it seems to be very popular. Should I rent the DVD, or should I try to find it online? I ask, 'cause of the quality reasons... if the movie is really as good as people say, then I'd prefer to watch a good quality version, thanks!
See Billy Run u betcha u shd rent it and watch over and over
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AudHep!
And Marilyn Monroe had already played a sexy kook neighbor girl in The Seven Year Itch. Audrey had the requisite uptown Tiffany lover and Vogue chic .
Audrey Hepburn was the perfect replacement for Marilyn Monroe as Holly Golightly. I can't imagine if Holly not portrayed by Audrey Hepburn
Truman Capote should consider himself very lucky that they used Audrey instead. Since M.M. would have cheapened the role. And not given that classic
air that Holly displayed.!!
I wish they had made 2 versions.
The brilliant one w/Audrey/Peppard & Blake Edwards.
Another with Marilyn directed by somebody else. The mind reels how steamy it could have been.
The movie is like an early version of pretty woman somewhat. LOL ;)
but better
Not at all
I didn’t think of Pretty Woman at all.
Nada q ver
ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!
I agree with you 100%.
that director is Blake Edwards (Julie Andrews' husband). He's not bitter he's telling the truth.
He's ashamed he mocked Oriental people by casting Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi (and rightly so..)
Otherwise he's famous for the Pink Panther series as well as Victor Victoria. He's a master.
please does anyone know the song that starts from 4:00 to 4:33; where they talk about the first shot/scene... such a nice song
Moon River
@xXPinkGoddessXx But it's not just or only about what was implied but not shown. Attitudes toward sexuality (and women) were much narrower during that era, regardless of how much the audience saw. My point was that Hepburn was obviously given the role to ensure that audiences would embrace and root for Holly, not condemn her. Audrey Hepburn was so enchanting a screen presence that it was easy, especially in 1961, to forget just how Holly made her living.
How right you are.!!!
Putting M.M. in that role would have made it way too obvious.!!!
Not a fan of the movie as a whole but the opening scene is pure art.
one of my favorite opening scenes!
You are the first I have encountered with this opinion. Although I disagree, I am excited to know more about your point of view, I am not looking for a debate, just to see from a different angle. Would you mind sharing with me please?
@@Willow_Sage_ What I liked about the opening scene:
It's dawn.
@@Willow_Sage_ What I didn't like about this movie:
The plot was thin and scattered.
Here is the link to the video I think you might find interesting. th-cam.com/video/0Gs-l6yHKHY/w-d-xo.html
please does anyone know the song that starts from 4:00 to 4:33; where they talk about the first shot/scene...
I wonder If Tiffany’s Gave Her A Beautiful Cut Of Diamond As Tokens of Appreciation
For Making Tiffany More Famous.
I read somewhere that "SHE WOULD NEVER BE KNOWN AS MISS DIAMONDS". When Tiffany's asked her if she would consider being a representative of their company.
This film couldn't have been cast with two better actors and a cat!
Miriam ❤️
No Other Person Could Of Did This Like Her, Noone Would Even Come Close.
so why did holly drove out the cat because she thinks she was like the cat..nameless and wild and chicken..and she hates it...but when she finds the cat it means she had finally accepted who she was even though shes a soaking nameless cat and realized...hey,its not a bad thing to be.
I didn't know she played a prostitute.
Moon River is lovely. It would never work now but it's a perfect song.
i did'nt know that Marilyn was the first priority for this film. I have nothing against audrey, she's bautiful and all but it just makes me wonder if the role would've been done by marilyn. It would've been one of her greatest films.. Anyway, i both love those two classic beauties. All we have now is someone like nicole kidman :(
@7thheavenfan007 she died, but of course will live on......
Sometimes angels become humans to help humans become angels .💖✨🌼55.
Not hard to decipher, that M.M. would'hv fooled anyone.!!!
oh yeah
Didn't Audrey Hepburn play Liza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
So who did Blake Edwards want to Paul?
I love Audrey!!
Although I am a HUGE fan of both audrey and marilyn, I still see audrey doing to part. She puts more spunk into the character, Marilyn wouldv'e been more lighthearted, more sad. Marilyn had a better on screen look, but Audrey made the character into a lengend
I don' think Marilyn had a better on screen look. I think Audrey and Marilyn both did. You can't compare them. Let Audrey be.
I'd be interested to see a different interpretation - one that stays more true to Capote's novella. Not saying there's anything wrong with this film, it's possibly my favourite film ever.... I'm interested to see what it'd be like to adapt the Novella straight.
That would be interesting, who do you think would be the ideal cast?
2020
7 people never will go to Tiffany's with Audrey.
I'm a 45 year old male, took care of my mother for ten years. Started to date and found out that women are not sincere, at least most of them are not. I'm better off with a regular escort than wasting my time with women who have no interest in me. I'm decent looling, tall and thin. Women want perfection. I've found someone who does care.
I'm glad they made the comments about the miscasting of Mickey Rooney, and the broad strokes given to the character he played. It is regrettable, the only cringeworthy part of an otherwise good movie. But those were the times.
From long ago learning that art term, from art contexts. But if you want Web definitions and sources: first, at Urbandictionary, "being so extreme that it has an amusing and perversely sophisticated appeal." And at Wicktionary, "from the French slang term 'se camper,' meaning 'to pose in an exaggerated fashion.'"
Not "parody," as that is a satiric rework of a song. Mickey Rooney in the film Moon River enacts, not sings.
the movie is much different than the novella
Escorts, if your lucky enough to find a good one are far better than having a girl friend. Much cheaper too. Emotionally, financially and in other obvious ways that don't need to be mentioned here. Find a good one you can see on a regular basis. Respect them and they will follow in return.
How such a wonderful film has one of the most racist scene in Hollywood . Ironic! Breakfast at Tiffany is still one of the classics . Good and bad ! Really smh on Asian character scene ..... just absolutely horrific and cringe !
I could kiss you for saying that!!
How could that man not have cast George Peppard? It could ONLY be played by him. No other way. It was meant to be.
True ... love is the opposite of nothing.
Blake Edwards never explains why he hated Mickey Rooney in the part
Actually she did The Nun's Story first.
Nicky Rooney was hilarious! 😂
Nicky Rooney wasn't in this one, his brother Mikey was though :)
@PeterFirthFan No, new Hollyood is crap. The people today have no talent.
I'm glad Mickey was casted, it was comical in my opinion.
mayonaiseizationable how lucky that people don't turn your race into an absurd stupid caricature at the height of your discrimination
You're right mayomustard It was all fun and games until Mel Gibson spoke...
It was "comic relief", much needed like the party scene. This was a very deep movie and tht balanced it beautuful. Blake Edwards at his finest.
yep, inspires me to get 50 bucks for the powder room. Ahem, prostitution..JK, one of my faves :P
YA, Im Not Suprised Tho.
The film was ruined, for me anyway, by Mickey Rooney's dreadful Japanese character. I have to fast forward as soon as he appears. Apart from that, it's terrific. George Peppard is one of my favourite actors, and Ms. Hepburn is sublime.
Turn on Captions xD
A great documentary on the movie...I too would have liked to have seen a true Japanese actor instead of Micky Rooney...but he took the part and went with it....
She's still a "stylish girl".
This was a great film, but the novella was better.
wow, really? that was NOT camp.
I am getting Ariana Grande vibes...
@NaturalBornHedonist She would have been a miscast, if she had to play the role like Audrey did. But if you look at the original story by Capote, she would have been much better suited for the role compared to Audrey. Capote himself thought of Audrey as a huge miscast.
But Audrey was absolutely amazing in the way she played the role.
you're too young. don't worry about it now. just enjoy the film.
Get over it Blake, it's just a movie!
