  • The human heart is about the size of a fist, weighs about 10 ounces, beats between one and three times per second and 100,000 times each day depending upon various factors. Our hearts pump about 1.5 gallons of blood each minute as it carries oxygen and nutrients to our cells and organs. Heart disease is always a leading cause of death in every ethnic group, and unhealthy lifestyles contribute to that. When we check for signs of life, a heartbeat is the primary indicator. About 1 of every 5 heart attacks are silent, doing damage that initially goes unnoticed. Our greatest joys and devastating traumas are felt “in our hearts.”
It is no wonder the Bible often speaks of the heart when describing the most important spiritual indicator of a human being. The heart is synonymous with our true identity. (Proverbs 27:19) (Proverbs 23:7) Heart is mentioned 858 times in the Old Testament alone! When speaking of the human heart, we are usually talking about our thoughts, emotions, will, and actions. The heart is where God works to change us, and where we must also work for real growth. (Romans 10:9-10) The heart is first mentioned in Genesis 6:5-6. The heart of man is shown to be continually focused on doing evil, and this condition grieved the heart of God and led to the flood.
    Proverbs 4:1-27
