  • Back to the basics for this tutorial, but this is Houdini after all and things can get a bit confusing when starting out.
    I will cover how to assign materials in Houdini and go into some specific scenarios that might come in useful.

    Thank you so much!! I had so many troubles with the materials, but this helped me A LOT!

    This covered perfectly my questions about material assignment !
    to objects and specially groups (or polygon selection tags for C4D users 😀)

    🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The way you explain things makes it SO easy to understand. I would buy you a coffee on patreon if you had one. Thank you thank you thank you!

    Great. Thanks, I really like your tutorials, short and useful. One suggestion for a tutorial, there is very little info out there about how to use the new plugin Substance (from the Labs toolset) with Redshift or other renderers. It feels like I'm not the only one looking for tips on that topic ;)

    I had a good laugh at your intro after having just spent 10 minutes trying and failing to figure out how assign a material. I'm not new to 3D either.

    Great... I am very new in Houdini... And I d like to assign 2 materials, or more, to the same mesh,a complex terrain mesh... The top faces a material, an ortophoto... And the sides and bottom another material.. How I can do this?

    Substance Materials - do you know how you could mix them and maybe apply it to heightfield erosion layers? Thank you for the instruction :)

      You would need to generate and use some masks. You can totally do it for sure...but it's difficult to explain in writing. Perhaps a good topic for a future tutorial.

    Hello, thanks for this tutorial. How do you assign a material to a dopnetworks ? I tried to assign a material to a dop import but it assigns to all the objects, and I want to assign it only on a single one.

      @RightBrainedTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I probably need a bit more info on what specifically you're trying to do. May I recommend also the ODForce and SideFX Forums as a good resource to find answers....lots of people way smarter than me on there!

    I noticed an issue between groups with obj & FBX, FBX doesn't seem to have group assignment option selecting from a list in the dropdown & oddly the doc file says that it isn't supported yet. I have been trying to setup a character and apparently you need a connectivity node kept as "class" and a partition node with Group_`@class` as the rule but all this doesn't show in Solaris

    • @RightBrainedTutorials
      @RightBrainedTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not terribly familiar with Solaris. Does it work in the regular OBJ/SOP context?

    • @GameArtsCafe
      @GameArtsCafe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RightBrainedTutorials You can import it as a sop import node or choose to only work in Solaris from scratch with Sop create node or Sop network. I did contact support and they are actually working on making assigning materials to groups easier. I was able to use bypass on my FBX, press 9 and choose by @FBX_material_name then you see a list of the groups by FBX material name. I had to first select he body mesh, and when you find the group you want to override select it, then type it manually into the groups field example : @cc_skin_arms At this point you'll have all the material properties exposed to change things like SSS etc.

    Hey bud. Quick question. Is it possible to force UV tiles to scale proportionately to fit an image that is used in the material like Maya can?

    • @RightBrainedTutorials
      @RightBrainedTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you use the UVProject Node, it should configure itself to the geometry automatically (assuming you're talking about a plane/cube type of object).

    • @Drew-bq8po
      @Drew-bq8po 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RightBrainedTutorials They are plane-type objects meaning quads. Not sure I can use that node. I've already cut UVs using the flatten uv node and have several materials set up in a material node. Not even sure how or where I could use the project node if I correctly understand what that node does. Basically, I have some materials which use a video as texture. Those videos are sized at 1920 x1080. However, as you know, those tiles are not that size nor that ratio. In Maya, we can set the ratio of the UV tile to match whatever ratio we choose, which is what I would like to do since I will be animating the UVs themselves and it makes it much easier to animate if I don't have to resize the UVs by squashing and stretching to make them work with the distorted material if that makes sense.
