36 years later...but despite the passage of time I am continually inspired by this event. Whenever I feel discouraged and like I'm in way over my head, I remember how Paul was mocked and told he didn't belong there and wasn't good enough. He went out and did his best and left the others (except poor Viktor) in his dust. Thank you Paul for the lifetime of inspiration!
No it wasn't Calgary and the Battle of the Brians. But this competition had its own charm with the silver medal win by Paul Wylie. As one announcer said Victor got the gold, but the evening belonged to Paul Wylie.
I will echo some of the sentiments previously expressed. I remember this Olympics so vividly. I just so fell in love with Paul Wylie. Yes, Paul should've won. He was better than Petrenko that night. Paul still remains my favorite ice skater!
Paul Wylie totally stole the show, but this Olympics wasn't like calgary though it was special in its own way. He is the brightest star and the biggest surprise medal winner. Too bad he didin't go to the worlds. Winning a medal at the Olympics is already so big. too bad it wasn't gold.
How do you win without really winning? Just ask Paul Wylie. He was so happy with what he'd accomplished, and Petrenko was standing on the podium looking as if his dog just died.
I'm sure it had an impact on how Petrenko felt that neither the Ukrainian nor Soviet Union national anthem could be played nor the Soviet Union flag flown. It would be like a USA athlete gold medalist not seeing the Stars and Stripes and hearing the USA's national anthem.
The reason why they play the IOC music and 1992 was that the Soviet Union is no more and other delegations decided that it was best that they are being called do you unified team in 1992.
Yes, without a doubt Paul Wylie is the greatest skater who has EVER lived, however, to Victor's credit, he did land a triple-triple combination. To put it in perspective, Paul gets to go home to the USA, enjoy a stellar professional skating career, graduate Harvard, marry his college sweetheart & father three sons. Let Victor enjoy the gold.
He landed a 3-3 but made major mistakes afterwords that really disrupted the flow of the program and disrupted the artistic impact. I don't mean to attack him personally but it's hard to justify his winning...
Karolyn Kelly-O'Keefe, you are right. Paul is such an amazing skater & should have won. Victor's performance SUCKED. Ditto Barna's who should have been given a mandatory .5 deduction for his hideous costume. Chris Bowman (R.I.P.) deserved the bronze.
Bleh bleh bleh. Those American commentators really need to shut up. Always promoting Americans like they’re the best. Wylie messed up in the long program:
Also, literally everybody messed up in the long program here... The only clean Performance came from Stojko. Wylie's mistakes were not as glaring and he stayed on his feet, which is why he got silver. Petrenko won on reputation.
Paul Wylie is such a great skater and always such a kind gentleman. USA is proud of you, Paul! And your Harvard degree!
The fact that Paul Wylie got any medal is amazing. He has always been my favorite

Shout out to that medal presenter. What a lovely guy

I love the closeup of the gold medal @ 0:43..The medals for the 1992 winter games have been the nicest winter olympics medals IMO
jhecht...I know your post is from nine years ago, but I agree. These oversized medals using Lalique crystal were beautifully designed.
The most beautiful of all time - by Lalique!
I loved Paul's ethusiasm! He won silver & seemed way happier than Petrinko
Paul Wylie got a louder scream. It's like you go to an opera and Def Leppard shows up. I was convinced he got robbed.
I'd been in love with Paul for years before this. Was so thrilled to see him do so well :)
I will echo some of the sentiments previously expressed. I remember this Olympics so vividly. I just so fell in love with Paul Wylie. Yes, Paul should've won. He was better than Petrenko that night. Paul still remains my favorite ice skater!
Paul's routine I will remember. Inspirational
Take note...winning the silver CAN be good. :)
All the guys should be proud.
He may have come in second, but that night belonged to Paul Wylie.
Wonderful skating and a wonderful night for Paul Wylie, but I love Viktor, too. Both seem like such nice people.

Paul so should have won. I love him!
It's so wonderful to see Paul Wylie there. Also, Petr Barna got himself a medal!
Paul, I can tell is a very nice man.
Paul Wylie should have won!

They *obviously* weren't going to raise 11 flags at once 🇺🇦🇹🇲🇹🇯🇷🇺🇰🇬🇰🇿🇦🇿🇦🇲🇧🇾🇲🇩🇺🇿 and play 11 national anthems back-to-back!
😝
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces - all three water signs on the podium!!
After many years I still remember Petrenko. He has been one of the most charming and succesful skaters from Russia and all over the world.
Petrenko is from Ukraine,Odessa!!!

Karolyn Kelly-O'Keefe: Paul’s wife had two daughters and their third child was a son.
Paul's wife was not his college sweetheart. He met his wife later.
He landed a 3-3 but made major mistakes afterwords that really disrupted the flow of the program and disrupted the artistic impact. I don't mean to attack him personally but it's hard to justify his winning...
Aw, Paul Wylie is so cute :-)
The true winner her was certainly Paul Wylie! Petrenko's LP was only sub par compared to Wylie's magnificent LP!
Rick Mileske I love them both so much, so either way, I'm glad they both did so well
No
I’m Ukrainian and Paul should have won
Thank you. ❤😊
Agreed! Victor was normally better, but not that night!
Paul Wylie was the best!
Wylie outskated Victor in this competition! Talk about flat out bias!!!

pellebravesskylar YES that costume of Barna’s was AWFUL!! I agree there should have been a deduction
The absolute worst gold medal winning performance in history! Hands down!

Everyone messed up re-watch the performances. It wasn't about that though-Paul really came through and shined this Olympics.
