The cat food man is the iconic L.A. detective Philip Marlowe - here played by Eliot Gould in, "The Long Goodbye" (1973, dir. Robert Altman). This updated and slightly screwball take on the classic noir 1930's/40's detective seems to have been an influence on Kate's story as a private detective in L.A.
