Three years later, but I see this is a popular question. Remove one link from your chain. Making sure that both ends have inner links at the end. Missing links are outer links. Purchase your missing link. Put it on your chain and bring the sides together then 1) Use a missing link tool/pair of pliers with an X configuration and squeeze the tool to seal the link or 2) Holding the link sides together with one hand put the chain on your chain ring and use your pedal to seal the link.
Don't buy this. I did (have much experience using a tool like this) The fence bent and driver pin snapped without much force. I called/emailed them with my issue. I was willing to pay for new pin but no response. Much better tools outthere

Removing the chain is easy, adding a link is horrible with this tool.
I'm pretty sure adding a link with any tool sucks goat nads.
