I'm from there, and the thing is Póvoa de Varzim is the closest nice beach place for a lot of northern Portugal. There are TONS of people from Guimarães, Fafe and even Braga that own appartements here and only come in the summer and people who rent places for the summer months only. And this is what explains the prices, really. The population here doubles or more during summer I'd say. Or at least it feels like so. As for the weather I'd add that it is pretty windy here, all year round (even during summer). Like the place is known for being windy and I can confirm And I'd say we don't expect foreign tourists to really come here a lot, or at least we're not so used to it. Hence why I imagine local people being curious about it. I worked at a beach bar during one summer and most of the tourists we'd get, would be people doing the Caminho de Santiago by the coast
Great video with very accurate and up to date information. Much appreciated. If I could provide one constructive suggestion, although I know Portuguese isn't your first language (definitely not an easy one to learn!) it's helpful to pronounce the name of the city as close as possible for the purposes of educating visitors. Thanks for all the work you put into sharing your experience and knowledge of our amazing country. Wishing you continued success.
I enjoy these informative videos! Still looking at our options. We loved our visit in April. Planning our return trip! Would love to hear you interview a military retiree- to see if the prices in Portugal would work & Visa options.
Great! Thanks for watching. Why specifically military retirees? We've interviewed 1 military person but the video wasn't about them being a military retiree. - Josh & Kalie
btw, if you guys happen to start another vid on Matosinhos, I have a vacant property or two currently in transition between rentals which you guys can visit if you want. Probably can give the audience a better idea of the lifestyle there. Keep it up!
Thank you very much! Will we see you at Fino Golf Club in Matosinhos tomorrow (Monday Feb 19th) 5:30 PM for the meetup? We could chat about it then. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere would love to come but I'm still in Hong Kong preparing to come next year for good. You have instagram dm? We can talk there, the user name is the same
LOL as I watched you strolling near the beach, I thought "Hmmmm....I wonder how they'd compare it to Matosinhos?" We only spent an afternoon walking around after we finished the tour of the Pinhais cannery, but with those newer/taller buildings near the beach and waterfront restaurants, with older neighborhoods not that far away, it seemed perhaps that Póvoa de Varzim would be an alternative that is cheaper, if the downtown Porto nightlife isn't important. Google Maps shows 28 minutes on the Metro from Bolhão to Matosinhos Sul versus 56 minutes from Bolhão to the end of the red line in Póvoa de Varzim. We live in metro Chicago, and even if we lived next door to a train station, it would take an hour or more to get downtown, and we're definitely still in the thick of suburbia. So an hour on the metro wouldn't bother me at all!
Thanks for sharing! We certainly prefer Matosinhos and seriously considered moving there back in the summer of 2021 when we got back to Porto after our 90 day Portugal tour. - Josh & Kalie
Please please please may I ask a question? We're hoping to move to Portugal (possibly Madeira or somewhere near Porto), but we have two cats! My husband says it will be absolutely impossible to find a rental property that allows pets, unless it's mega expensive or charge a lot on top for the pets. What is your experience if you have any or noticed anything? I'm desperately wanting to keep my cats 😭 (both have passports, vaccinations, were from EU). Thank you ❤
I came over with 2 dogs and a cat. It was no problem for us. It'll depend on each landlord. It might take a little longer to find a rental but it's definitely possible. In my experience, landlords have a greater aversion to dogs than cats. Also, our rental agent told us that legally landlords cannot reject pets in Portugal, but of course they can choose other tenants over you. Even still, I think you'll find something with a little patience. We didn't have to pay any extra fees. Good luck!
Please Kaylee and Josh, please take note of accents on the words. , especially if you do a while vídeo on Póvoa de Varzim. The accent is on the first ó in Póvoa - so it is pronounced the same as "po" in "pot" in English.
Are you referring to the Matosinhos video? It should have popped up as this video was ending. You can always search our video library while on our channel. We love when people do that. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Thanks. I don't use autoplay (I think that's what it's called) which allows TH-cam to decide what plays next, if that's what you're referring to. But I notice some TH-camrs point to an empty spot on the screen toward the end of their videos saying "click here next for such and such video" but there is no link there. I can't remember what happened when I wrote that comment now, but that may have been it, and then I do recall trying to searc your content with the city you had mentioned as a keyword and nothing came up. I'll try that search again and see if anything comes up. I may not have known how to spell the name correctly Hope you are all well

@@lacha608 Hi, so yes, unless there a glitch in TH-cam, which there could be, what should happen when I pointed up is that a rectangle with the thumbnail of the Matosinhos video comes up for people to click on before the video ends. Povoa has a very northern portuguese almost working class vibe. It's also quite an ugly town aside from the beach. Not much going on also. For these reasons, povoa would never be a fit for most americans and other expats, they're too fancy pants and willing to pay dumb money to live in bonfim, foz etc
Expat in Póvoa here as of November 23. Summed up well! Am enjoying my time here so far 👍

It’s a nice city but housing inventory is reduced and expensive.
For sure. It's weirdly expensive but we think it could be because of access to water. - Josh & Kalie
May be a place for retirees! Slower pace.
Could well be! :-) - Josh & Kalie
I liked driving there but I had no idea it was this expensive to buy Real Estate there. Maybe going more towards Vianna do Castelo is cheaper.
Yes, Viana do Castelo is certainly better priced in our opinion. - Josh & Kalie
