    I am 77 and spun out on black ice this morning for the first time in my life. Two lane road , nobody behind me, a car coming at me about a block and a half away. I had no previous knowledge of how to drive on black ice but when the car started to spin I did nothing - It spun one full circle plus a half circle which pointed me back to home and that is where I went. Your video was very informative - thank you

    Rick, when you spun out, I’m glad no one was on the road driving towards you or you might have ended up in the hospital. I’m glad you are okay. When there is ice, drive slower. In some cases 20 or 30 mph slower than posted speed limit, if driving on interstate freeways or city highways. You know this and I do but many other drivers do not. They think their brakes will save them, they are wrong. They will be in the ditch or in the hospital just like everyone else if they relay only on brakes. Driving knowledge is what saves us, not brakes alone.

      Ice on the road that you can't see my friend is rare. And it's even rarer if you have the skill to recognize the weather conditions that cause ice. You're going to do awesome. All the very best, Cheers Rick

  • @lightotw
    @lightotw ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're an expert and you got caught driving too fast on an icy road? Hmmm, maybe not so expert? Just slow down. Use winter tires. You'll never need skid control (if that's even a thing, given how badly it would turn out if there was anyone else around) if you just slow down and drive for winter, not the speed limit. Black ice is also common after a thaw and then refreeze - it leaves ice along the right edge of the road. ABS applies braking equally, so no traction on right tires means none on left tires either. Good tires, slowing down, leaving space around cars, and making glacial changes is all you can do.

    High traffic areas where cars are slowing down are often very good locations for ice, particularly if the humidity is high and temperatures are very low, like down around +10F or lower. These are conditions where there's a lot of water being emitted in vehicle exhaust and it immediately drops down to the road surface and freezes. In cold areas of the country you'll see this happening a lot at the approach to intersections and on congested parts of freeways that haven't been treated well with chemicals and sand yet.

    How do you stop the vehicle if there is black ice on the road? I was approaching a stop light that suddenly turned red and was barely able to stop the vehicle in time

    • @IcebulletZ
      @IcebulletZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is a year late. Tap your breaks or pump them. This prevents as much sliding and will stop your wheels and steering from locking up. Intersections though are some of the worst for slipping, if you know you can't make the stop slide through given other cars haven't started up... They shouldn't if they're smart. If you finally stop mid intersection you're a bigger danger since it'll be harder to start again and clear. Outside of all that look for cues that you'll need to stop prior and slow ahead of time.
