I imagine the Rex laying down thing may be similar to horses. While horses do lay down for short periods, if they are down for extended periods of time their body weight will crush their organs. Adult horses mainly sleep standing up right outside of short sun naps. So, maybe a Rex would have slept standing.

Maybe the Rex slept like chicken sitting on his feet. Most of his weight would still be supported by the legs, but he could rest well and get up easily again.

Imagine a chicken laying down. That's how most therapods(meat eaters) slept. There is no concrete evidence on adult t rex, but it could lay down without crushing itself as elephants do that as well, just not for long

Rex would sleep on its belly due to its size. Smaller therapods would be more flexible and could lay on their backs and sides. A rex could roll over a little but if it got stuck on its back it would be prey. If a rex fell however thats different, it would break bones and die from it

It’s theorized they slept like birds so standing was easy. Laying on their side was risky with body weight and without a means of standing quickly a t-rex ran the risk of being taken by a stronger predator in territory fights. Be the first on your feet.

I've heard, that the little T-Rex arms were pretty strong and were very useful to get up again, if the Rex falls on the ground.
Also, this is my personal theory, because I saw it once in a dinosaur doku, maybe the Rex didn't lay down for sleeping, instead it sits on his feet, similar to a chicken. It would still have most of his weight on his legs, but could rest well and get up again easily.

So I’m not a scientist or anything but it sounds like your friend was telling partial truth. It makes sense that if it FLOPPED over it’d be crushed however to sleep I’m pretty sure they’d just squat down and lay on the ground and get up in the morning.
Mabye not crushed but probably break some bones the equivalent if you just flopped yourself on some concrete you would really hurt you're self

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure its a myth. Rexes probably hurt themselves badly if they fell, but I dont think its an insta_death
Of course, an elephant can fall on its side and it would be fine. Same logic would be applied to trex.

Found this on google, and I am pretty sure I heard this in a documentary once, but I could be wrong, "It slept sitting on its pubic foot. The pubic foot (pubis) was a bone in its pelvis that acted as a third foot, allowing free movement of the legs when weight was shifted to it" So it laid down on its belly with it legs to the side in a crouching position and when it needs to get up it gets un-crouches and stands up. Though there is other research that says it sleeps standing up or just can lay down like a kangaroo.

Trex won’t die if it fell, it would just be really hurt. But when it wants to lay down or go to sleep, it would slowly kneel down and lay it’s head down infront of it so then it can rest but when they get up they use their tail to swing up and use their arms as well to push themselves up

The tyrannosaurus slept lying down, chest on floor with its foot planted on the floor to keep it able to get up after sleeping. Most four legged dinosaurs slept standing up.
Hi dino nerd here. Most dinos that were pretty large would die if they fell as that would be allot of weight which would break bones. A rex with a broken leg is a dead rex. A rex could sleep on its side and roll, but its quite likely most large therapods slept on their bellys. There are actually some fossils of raptors that fell and died, one broke its arm which entered the ribcage and killed it almost instantly.

So if a T-Rex’s legs were truly as muscular as we seem to think they are, yes a T-Rex could lie down and get up. However, if the animal were like a cow with much smaller legs the animal would not be able to get up after laying down, which is why many cows and horses sleep standing up.
Here this is what I found on this topic read if you want.
According to paleontologist Gregory Erikson from Florida State University, T-Rex may not simply die from falling, though it may sustain heavy injuries. He also agrees that they probably stood much like birds do, but aided considerably by their tails.
Axeman you're right about the falling part, but that would only be if it tripped while running, got pushed over, etc. I think. But I'm pretty sure it would've laid down to sleep.
Edit: basically suddenly falling or smthing like that.
Rexes slept like cats/birds with their feet tucked under their body etc, And if they did fall over on their stomach they just got up, but if they fell on their side, they wouldn’t necessarily DIE, theyd just be stuck. (They would normally die from starvation or something because theyd be stuck, but not from being crushed by their own body weight)

As far as I know, a rex would be able to stand back up if it got it's legs all of the way back under it. Generally you would think they sleep like birds, they're powerful enough to just use their legs

the t rex They simply laid down on their stomach. Due to the length and weight of their tail they could use it as a counterweight to easily stand up again. They slept upright much like birds do. This could very well be the case since dinosaurs are closely related to birds.
To those interested, even horses lay down during a certain part of sleep, a trex would lay down with there belly on the dirt, legs arranged where when the rex wants to get up it just has to step up and walk forward

Rex's get up by using their tail, when a rex is on the ground they use their tail to get back up for swinging it around as momentum to get back up

Rex’s could lay down but being pushed. Over in a fight would be lethal for them since it’s would take longer to get up because of its weight so technically yes falling. Over is dangerous but not when they lay down
