  • This video shows where the coolant leak on this Mazda CX-9. Due to casting failure either cylinder head or the cylinder block.
Mazda Coolant leak vehicle range as follows.
    2019 to 2020 CX-5 Sky active 2.5L turbo engine.
    2016 to 2020 CX-9 Sky active 2.5L turbo engine.
2018 to 2020 Mazda 6 Sky active 2.5L turbo engine.
You will easily find this once you carry out cooling system pressure test.
When it comes to the potential damages caused by a coolant leak in the engine, there are several important considerations. Coolant plays a crucial role in regulating the operating temperature of the engine. When there's a leak, the engine can overheat, leading to a range of problems, including:
    1. Engine damage: Overheating can cause the engine components to expand beyond their design limits, leading to warping, cracking, or other forms of damage to the engine block, cylinder head, or gaskets.
    2. Reduced lubrication: The excess heat from an overheating engine can also cause the oil to break down more quickly, reducing its effectiveness as a lubricant and potentially leading to increased wear on engine components.
    3. Blown head gasket: If the engine overheats severely, it can cause the head gasket to fail, leading to a loss of compression, mixing of coolant and oil, and potential damage to the engine internals.
    4. Electrical system damage: Coolant leaks can also affect electrical components if the coolant comes into contact with wiring or connectors, potentially causing short circuits or other electrical issues.
Overall, a coolant leak in a Mazda VRX-9 can lead to significant and costly engine damage if not addressed promptly. It's important to identify and repair coolant leaks as soon as possible to prevent these potential issues.

There is now a class action lawsuit on this defect. Jarvis et al v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc. et al. Pretty condemning allegations.
One would hope that at a minimum Mazda will pay for the repair and/or extend its drive train warranty.
I have a 2019 CX-9 and it sickens me to drive a car with this ticking time bomb. Thanks Mazda!

My 2016 CX-9 with 85k just had this problem. It started leaking coolant somewhere behind the engine. I could smell it but not see it. It was running onto and 😮burning off on the exhaust and tranny. Mazda dealer says I have to replace the cylinder head assembly. Fortunately I had the extended warranty and it should cover the repair. I guess this will be my last Mazda.

you are so lucky that you had extended warranty, otherwise it will end up with expensive repair.

I’ve seen one with a head gasket leak (just through the head gasket)
But this one (customer picked up the car / apparently he got Mazda goodwill warranty and got a new engine)
If any come through I will definitely make a video where the problem is.

Mazda needs to stick to it's bread and butter 2.0 and 2.5 along with v6 engines. Every time I hear TURBO on a Mazda comes along with engine issues. I've had 2 Mazda 3's in my life one with the 2,0 engine (260K miles) and one with the 2.5 (150k Miles) regular oil change, regular maintenance that's all they need.
