I think the reason Mercedes did create a mild hybrid, not a full one like the Lexus LS 600hL, is because it tests these cars on the AUTOBAHN, so weight is a detriment to performance. You want to assure that it can brake quickly enough from 150 mph and can be very manueverable if an accident occurs.
The old saying is, Mercedes is a car for people who like to be driven around and BMW is a car for people who enjoy driving themselves. (hence the slogan, Ultimate Driving Machine)
It's marketing. I don't think they particularly compete with each other directly. Mercedes has a certain focus and the same BMW because they would try to target a certain niche, rather than try to do everything, like Toyota, which may cause you to lose track of things.
my girlfriend just bought this car second hand last month. she lets me drive it. nothing special about this car. the fuel economey is only 6 persen diferent than 350. but i have to admit that the comfort and slience is the winner of this car.

hybrid from Mercedes is the WORST CHOOSE IN MY LIFE !!! I own one and is my nightmare, the warranty for electric components is ONLY 3 YEARS, that mean if some goes wrong you will pay a lot of money , battery is about 16.000 euro, I got the DC/DC converter stop working = 2500 euro, so all my economic achievements by gas are GONE, the staff from service told me that I must pay the replacement. I conclude = Hybrid by Mercedes or all other cars is in fact 0 economy, the worst thing is that the car is unusable without electric.... so is the biggest SHIT ! THUMBS down for it and for Mercedes.
