I bought Ozark Trail trekking poles at Walmart. $20 vs. the Black Diamond $270 at Walmart. My neighbor bought a Leki cane-like trekking pole. It has been wonderful.

Great tips! I have used poles for 20 years, as I have back, hip and knee issues. The best tip for me is how to place the poles when walking to give a bit of propulsion as I was always doing it wrong. Also the correct height and angle. Thanks! I also Kayak and always keep a spare pole under the straps to reach as an aid and for walking around camp.

I'm going to try your super secret "trick" of holding the top of the pole when going downhill. Good one!. I have those real nice MSR fold up poles which also includes the adjustable length feature. My poles came with a soft grip "below" the usual hand hold when hiking a short distance uphill so I don't need to adjust the pole length.
Duct tape can also be used as tinder & will burn long & hot when starting a fire.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

4:44 - the "too high" position is a much more perfect 90 degrees at the elbow than the correct one. I actually set my poles up for the first time this way, with a square 90 degrees at the elbow, and found them far too high. it seems like a sloppy 90 degrees is the way to go :)

Some poles like my yellowstone ones come with a soft grip directly below the main hand grip. I'd imagine based on what you say Aaron this is for shorter pretty steep up hill bursts especially if the ground is very unstable etc. You can actually put the flesh between thumb and forefinger over lowest lip of main hand grip whilst using this soft grip. Although the strap can't be used. Maybe it's just as an option of using more like a conventional walking support stick however?

    • @ALinsdau
      @ALinsdau  ปีที่แล้ว

The lower part of the grip has been useful when holding the poles w/o straps. Stay safe out there!

Basically, when on flat ground we want our elbows to be at an approx. 90 degree angle. When going up hill it’s recommend to shorten the trekking poles so your elbows are still at a 90 degree angle. When going down hill, it’s recommended to have the poles taller for stability… right?

i see them as just cumbersome - how can you climb over bolder and tree trunks up and over with your hands if you have poles in the way - they seem to limit exploring and adventures- you’re only able to use them upright
i can’t see how they aren’t just in the way except they maybe helpful in heavy mud inclines when there’s no branches to hold onto
or deep snow to get balance and figure out how deep it is

    • @ALinsdau

I have both stowed one pole and just lengthened the downhill, and other times shortened the uphill pole and used it. It depends on the dust level, rockiness of the terrain, etc.

Idk why they don't have a design with an over-top grip. One that fills the palm comfortably and able to grip fingers around for control.
Also a hollow, skeletonized grip to allow airflow sounds like it'd be nice.

Id guess for safety, biomechanical efficiency and safety is paramount in the activities we spend so much of our lives doing. an over the top grip like you're describing could be more comfortable for some in short bursts (I have a dish brush like that and I love it for scrubbing grout) but for long term repeated use it goes against the natural/neutral wrist and hand position. A pronated grip would also recruit different muscle groups than desired in Nordic walking. obviously someone in great shape would be able to use either with little difficulty, but for a beginner, elder, or person with a condition like arthritis, it could cause injury over time. An example you could look up to demonstrate how much better the body performs with 'knife hands' would be someone doing push-ups the average way vs someone who has one of those wrist saver pushup bars. you could also look up general joint protection principles to learn more.

Very helpful. I am new to using poles - now I know how! Not sure about the tape however; If it is so strong, how do you unwrap it off the pole to use on something else?

The tape is wrapped onto itself, so it'll peel off just like if it were on the original roll. It comes off the poles without too much effort.

Aaron. You neglected the most important safety reason for not simply putting your hand through the strap and grabbing the grip versus coming up from below the strap then reaching over to grab the grip as you demonstrate. Using the incorrect way will lead to the possibility of breaking your thumb if you were to fall since it will get trapped around the strap. Of course, it is much easier to show this technique.

Good to note. The one time I ate it hard on ice on Mt. Elbrus from a stumble, my natural inclination was to power grip the pole and I punched into the ice, leaving me with missing chunks of knuckle skin. It was so warm I wasn’t wearing gloves. Now I always wear my liners in snow just for protection.

i’m so confused - the was not steep at all - slight incline - not sure why you need a pole for that - it’s not muddy and you’re not 90
    - i literally don’t understand- and what did you mean by advance use? as in advance in need of use- or age?

When you said I feel like I'm in draft, It first sound like you said.." I feel like I'm in Drag", " I dont know what that feels like". " I don't want to do that."
and I started laughing yeah I can imagine you in a dress Twinkle Toes going to the mountains..that would make for a better experience..lol oh dear I don't need my nails to get dirty right now. I don't need any nail polish getting chipped. Oh my

I never heard of such lyrics and I looked them up on the internet and it kind of reminds me of Weird Al Yankovic we used to listen to him in the 70s

You never explained to use the poles asymmetrically, I had to look at another video for that...

When you do a simple walking, hands should be straight all the time (45 degrees) and movements should start from shoulders otherwise you don't use upper muscles.

Um… as a beginner, l may have missed something, but how tight (or loose) should the loops of the straps be ? As I have them now, the ‘web’ between my thumb and forefinger is about 1/2” below where straps enter the pommel at the top of the pole - Nick
