    Hi Dennis, I am a trainer in a Brisbane AU Club -both fixed and rotary. I use buddy cables a lot. I have mainly spektrum TX's. I have an old Optic 6 which I had fitted with an FRsky module a few years ago. I have been a fan of FRsky since then. I just recently found the Taranis. It has taken me 3 weeks to get my head around the capabilities and power... what a machine! NOW you have helped immensely with the buddy setup on this great TX, and I thank you. I just might add... a very clear, concise and easy to understand video. Obviously you have a talent there, and I am impressed. I will also (like CHAD below) be trying a DX7 and DX8 as a buddy. Cheers, Dennis G.

      Thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad this helped. Let me know what you find out about the Spektrum. I don't have one handy, but a buddy does and maybe we'll be able to try this soon. Take care.

    Dennis Baldwin. Thank you. I dug my old T9x out of a bin and used your simple instructions to make a trainer box. My brother built his first plane (bixler v1). We got him into the air using this buddy box set up! Thank you!

    Excellent useful video, I setup my Taranis as master and a Spektrum Dx5e as a Student box and worked perfectly. the other good think is that Taranis is setup in Mode 1 and the Spektrum Dx5e is setup in Mode 2, Taranis allows you to do that, Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Dennis. Thank you so much for this information. I was having problems connecting my Turnigy 9x (with not easily removable factory fitted RF module) to a Taranis X9D. Your instruction to remove the RF module solved the problem. I wasn't keen to unsolder the module in case I needed it later. I have found that it is possible to switch the RF module off. On the Turnigy 9X transmitter, in the model setup first page, it is possible to change the setting of 'Proto'(col) from 'PPM 8CH' default, to 'PPMSIM 8CH' (some other settings can be used). Again, many thanks.

    I don't know what it is, but you seem to have a video for everything I am trying to do! I just set up my 9XR and Taranis to wirelessly buddy box (using a spare D8R-XP. These instructions helped a lot. Thanks again, and thanks from my fiance and 7-year old who will now be able to start flying!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      tpalshadow Ha ha. Thanks so much. I think the reason is that I try to do videos on things that I'm working on or things that have frustrated me. So with that we have a bunch of topics covered :) I'm glad this helped and very cool to hear your fiance and kid are going to be flying. I have two girls that have a bit of interest in flying. It's so fun to share the hobby.

    • @AbHjz
      @AbHjz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain how did you do the wireless body box?

    • @tpalshadow
      @tpalshadow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, I'm using a FrSky receiver capable of PPM output plugged into the Taranis instead of the cord in this video). So you bind the receiver attached to the Taranis to another transmitter (9XR in my case) and calibrate it's input as shown in the video. Then you can bind the Taranis with whatever receiver you have in your vehicle. I hope that made some sense...you do have to use the pins in the module bay of the Taranis, you can find which pin is what by doing a quick google search.

    • @AbHjz
      @AbHjz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      tpalshadow thanks for the quick reply, so as you are telling , you should have a frsky module on your 9xr

    • @tpalshadow
      @tpalshadow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in my case that is correct. Although you could easily use any brand for the slave radio as long as the receiver you connect using PPM to the Taranis supports that PPM connection.

    Excellent help. I appreciated the step through. I used this to help me create a trainer box from Spektrum DX6i and all works the same (excepting Throttle is Channel 1). The only bit of trouble is that the buddy transmitter has to have centered trims and sub-trims before zeroing the calibration.

    Hi Dennis - great video and so informative. I just switched to Taranis, but am wondering if I can use my new Taranis as Master with my old DX7s. It uses the same audio port for connecting, and I have had good success in training from my DX7s to a DX5i.... Truly better than juggling a single receiver between learner and master, or "awkward" hugs from behind to teach someone to fly.
    ;-)
    Any experience with Taranis as Master over a Spektrum radio would be great then I can use my Spektrum orange module and Spektrum radio to teach others at the field.
    Great video - really shows the process. Four thumbs up!
    Chad

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad, that's a great question. I used to have a Spektrum TX but no longer do. I have a buddy with one and the next time we meet up I'll ask him to bring it. The easiest thing to check would be to hook the two up and then go to the trainer screen as I show in the video to see if moving the Spektrum sticks cause any of the calibration values to change on the Taranis. If it does then you at least know the signal is being sent over. I'll let you know if I find anything out. Take care.

  • @ericdamexican

    Wow! I've never owned a radio other than a turnigy 9x or the Taranis, except a 5 ch Spektrum that came with a rtf. So I'm not used to referencing a manual like them fancy dx8 guys!! Lol! Jk, anyways thanks for this cuz I would of never figured that out!!!! Kudos to you sir!!!!

  • @packyfpv3660

    Hi!!! In your opinion is the trainer mode possible also with inverted role? I would like to connect my flysky (master) to my frsky (slave)... i want to use the flysky as master because my girlfriend bought a flysky compatible drone and i wanna be her backup in case she lose control. I created a diy trainer cable which connects ppm to ppm and gnd to gnd of the two trainer ports. I configured the trainer mode on the flysky and set the taranis as slave, but when i move the switch to enable the slave, the first 8 channels (the ones theoretically controlled by the slave) change position, but they remain fixed when i moved the taranis sticks. Have you got any idea about what i'm missing?

  • @psxcancer
    @psxcancer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the prompt response. I and plenty of other flyers would appreciate it. I'm not sure what comes with the RealFlight 7, but if you could get the Transmitter working in the Setup\configure controller in RealFlight, that would be great. I'm relatively new to flying and think it might be a smarter move to log more hours on RealFlight 7, especially since you can fly pretty much anytime .
    Thanks again, I have watched enough of your videos to know that you can figure it out.
    P.S. What do you think of that Turnigy i10 transmitter?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should the transmitter that has binded previously with the rx always be the master? Or can it be the slave too? So that the master on the non-binded tx actually uses the antenna on the slave transmitter?

  • @Green87
    @Green87 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much, this helps a lot!! Seems like this would be perfect for a dual operator setup. Instead of mapping all the channels in the trainer section, just the channels that control the cameras pitch and yaw would be mapped. The master radio controls the craft while the slave radio controls the pitch and yaw of the camera. Does this sound right?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Wade Dexter That's a very interesting thought. Hadn't really crossed my mind but the main problem I see with the logic is that only one TX can be active at a time. I have to toggle a switch to give the slave control and at that point in time I no longer have control. Let me see if I can find anything else out though.

    • @Green87
      @Green87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dennis Baldwin Thank you for the comment! If the Thr, Ail, Ele, Rud are left off under the trainer section do you still lose control when you flip the switch to slave? Another idea is to use the additive mode that you mention in the video and give 100% control for the camera channels and 0% for the AETR channels. I'll probably borrow a 2nd Tx soon to play around with but if you figure anything out or you get some time to fiddle with the settings, let me know what you find!! Thanks again :)

  • @psxcancer
    @psxcancer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Dennis, I just want to say thanks for all your hard work and keeping us up to date with the latest and greatest techniques.
    I have a question, maybe you've already addressed it in a previous video and if so can you send or post a link?
    I'm trying to use my Turnigy 9X v2 stock firmware with my Realflight 7, but I'm having trouble getting my Turnigy calibrated.
    I'm using one of those USB connectors (and of course the audio cable is attached to that) you select what software you want to use by moving the switch.
    I'm not sure what transmitter is compatible, since Turnigy is not on there. I've seen in a few forums that JR and Spektum is supposed to be compatible. Also I'm unsure if there is something in the Turnigy settings I need to turn on, can you do a video on how to set it up for RealFlight 7 or if you made a video already, could you send the link.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +psxcancer That's a really good question. I haven't messed with this yet. I have the controller that comes with RealFlight and haven't thought about using a Turnigy 9X or Taranis, but I would definitely expect it to be possible. If I get some time I'll look into this and see what I can find out. If someone in the group knows how to do this hopefully they can provide some info. Thanks for following along and the good words.

    If there is no external module on the 9X does anything need to be disconnected?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Williams I don't think so. Not 100% sure, but assuming you have a 9X that accepts external modules and the external module isn't plugged in then I think you're okay.

      I'm not sure, to be honest. I don't have one to test with but please let us know if you figure it out.

    why is turnigy throttle ch3. ?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kennethpappas Not sure. It's been that way for a while. Some prefer the AETR order while others go TAER. With the Taranis throttle can be moved to any channel. I can't remember if that's possible with the stock T9X firmware. I know it's possible with OpenTX.

    Hy Dennis, many compliments for your tutorials.
    I'd like to connect a super chap turnigy 5x (www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43854__Turnigy_5X_5Ch_Mini_Transmitter_and_Receiver_Mode_2_.html) to a 9xr pro for control a 3 axis gimbal using the trainer mode.
    With the 5x i will control pitch and yaw with the sticks and the "gimbal modes" with a switch. The gimbal is a dys smart 3.
    Do you think yhat it will be possible?
    Many thanks!!
