There are not enough superlatives for Daniel’s ability to teach principles and make it captivating, entertaining at the same time. I get a full on self esteem boost every time I watch one of his videos. Pure gold as a resource for not just chess but I would point teachers of ANY subject matter to his channel. His skill in this area quite incredible!

One of the most interesting things about professional chess community to me is the unique aspect of how long players have known and played each other. Like hearing each of your perspectives from tournaments when you were kids or every time I see Garry and Magnus talking now as adults and thinking back to Magnus as this small kid, drinking his orange juice, while Garry stares in disbelief at the board. 😊 Easily a top episode if not my favorite so far!! 🤍

About mental health; to anyone who's ever been a victim of bullying / hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :) Remember; There's never anything wrong with you.

Danya is always such a classy charismatic guy, and it was really fun hearing him engage in a full conversation rather than just teaching or commentating. I agree with everyone saying we need a part two! I'd love to hear you guys go off about random tournament stories/memories, and about the shifting world of/future of chess, and about chess improvement, and about teaching, and about all sorts of things. This was one of the best episodes of ANY podcast (in ANY topic niche) I've ever listened to, and felt like it was over in a flash. I'm 47 years old and I learned to play chess when I was 19 or 20, so my first chess experiences where in the mid to late 90s. I used to go to local chess clubs and I really enjoyed that, we'd take the games to a local iHop or Waffle House once the club kicked us out. In 1997, I got a Sega Saturn, which had a modem attachment. My second controller slot had an adapter and a keyboard and I used to play chess on sites like Caissa. Soon after, I got a 486 computer and used to play on PlayChess, ICC and FICs. At some point, I started playing chess exclusively on my phone, maybe the early 2000s and since then there is probably only a handful of days I haven't played a game online (no longer OTB). I'm around expert/candidate master level now and I exclusively play three minute games (no increment) because of the rise in cheating (another topic all together). Regarding the conversation about OTB and online chess, I've noticed that I am exactly the opposite of the GMs on the C-squared podcast, it now feels weird for me to play OTB, I feel kind of out of sorts. However, on my phone I am an absolute speed demon and I am more intuitive in my style, sort of the same thing Fabiano was saying but with opposite interfaces. Coming from Gen X, that maybe makes me a bit of an anomaly, more like the younger generation. It is an interesting conversation and I have wondered if this is a psychological thing or a matter of perception and what we get used to, glad ya'll brought it up. On a side note, and I know everyone is getting tired of this subject, but I was basically learning with the rise of online chess and I can tell you without doubt (at least in my own mind), cheating has grown exponentially in the last twenty years. Other players that I know, that played in the early days of online chess, have similar experiences and feelings. I feel like the problem is way bigger than most people think and that top players experience it less because they have more visibility. Example, I created three different accounts on LiChess and made speedruns to try and get to 2100. Every time, I burn through everyone until I get to the 1900-2000 level players, then I have to grind like a mofo, and then when I get to 2000+ the players get easier. I noticed this by chance at first and then I tried the experiment a few more times, with the same results. I thought, okay, maybe this is my own psychological impediment but then I looked at the accuracy scores of the 1900-2000 rated players vs 2000+, not even close. I know platforms have a lot riding on this not being the case but, unfortunately, I think they are probably aware and are trying to scramble until they get a more foolproof solution against cheating. On a side note, I really enjoyed following chess engine development in the late 90s. I am a software developer and data analyst in my career but I used to follow advancements in early engines, their pruning methods, tablebases....all of that fun stuff. I really enjoyed working with Crafty (shout out to Robert Hyatt!) and my all time favorite chess engine, Fruit! Do some analysis with fruit someday and compare it to other engines, it's a truly interesting engine with surprisingly modern evaluation methods. Love the podcast, keep up the good work, more interviews!

I really appreciate the mental health section, I am a 2000 rated player over the board and find chess to be extremely stressful much to the extent where it sometimes feels like ptsd. its more like a fuel for negativity which keeps me going on trying despite the terrible losses or bad events I've had as for me I feel like if I don't achieve a title then I haven't amounted to anything in chess. i may be 2500 online or 2200 OTB blitz but none of that matters until I finally get my rating to 2200 so then I would feel truly happy seeing one of my most important goals in life to be fulfilled. i connect with many of the things you've stated and just feel like quitting chess competitively except for speed chess as that's not stressful but its great to hear it from someone who has always played chess at a very high level. you are awesome danya and as usual I appreciate you Fabi as you were always a chess heroes in my eyes when I was low rated. I love these topics and have always been appreciating these podcasts since the start stay safe and play chess happy ciao friends
Great episode! I love the assertation that because shorter formats are growing in popularity, it doesn't mean that longer formats are dying out. I loved the Tata Steel commentary and commentary of games of that length for so many reasons; I can listen and follow it casually and give it my focus when something happens, I can hear an in depth analysis of a position in real time and learn why certain moves make more sense than others, and being one of the ADHD kids, it's one of the few things I can slow down and concentrate on without losing focus.

the point about seeing positions differently just by changing your physical viewpoint rings true for me. flipping the board when playing online will SO often lead to me seeing something i hadnt noticed before, even though its the exact same position. just pattern recognition i guess. neat interview!
could take away from the point of this video being that its a podcast - as a lover of chess that would be cool but if i were here to spectate it wouldnt be the greatest thing maybe putting it at the end would be cool
While talking would be weird and uncomfortable.. Especially bearing in mind that this is a podcast after all, and many people are probably just listening. IMO a blitz game at the end would be a nice chessy touch though.
I am amazed by these guy's trajectory in Chess... I started young too but I never had the disciple to get into competitive chess. Lately, thanks to Danya's speedruns I returned to Chess, hopefully I'll hit 1500 soon!
Great interview! As a fan of chess part of me kind of wants to see Danya break through 2700 and play with the big boys in classical chess. But at the same time I completely understand why he doesn't want to play classical chess. I've never done it but it sure sounds pretty intense. I can't imagine playing chess 3-5 hours every day for 11 out of 14 days in a big tournament. Even in my local area the tournaments are like 8 hours long. Whereas online I play maximum 2 hours and usually 10-30 minutes. I find it more fun to be a casual player instead of a competitive player but I've got huge respect for the competitors out there who slug it out in these long tournaments or matches.

Yeah for real, he's one of the smoothest conversationalists I've ever seen in action, whether on the pod or in commentary or in any context. I haven't watched that Charisma on Command channel in forever and ever (they've been a little cringe for me now and then lol) but listening to this pod had me thinking that it'd be super fascinating to see them analyze how charismatic Danya is and how he's so good at keeping conversations balanced and engaging and flowy
It's been great having Fabi stream and learn he's human with a sense of humour & a talented communicator. He came across previously as a bit of a cold fish TBH.
I think there is a big aspect to chess and mental health which has been overlooked in the discussion in this video. People who start feeling hatred towards chess I think don't feel that way because of their wins or losses, (sure a recent streak of losses might speed things up). I think they feel that way mainly because they have come to realisation at some point that they are probably missing out on something else in life and not only are they going to start hating themselves, but also the activity itself for all the time which they had "sunken" into it. And I think the same holds true not only for chess but many other games and possibly even competitive sports or even studying.

My chess has improved watching Daniel's speedrun. I was struggling to break pass 1000 now I will reach 1500. Such a great teacher.

While talking would be weird and uncomfortable.. Especially bearing in mind that this is a podcast after all, and many people are probably just listening. IMO a blitz game at the end would be a nice chessy touch though.
Lot of people listen to podcast in the background or on spotify, so I don't think it's the best idea. maybe 2-3blitz games in the end works better.

I am amazed by these guy's trajectory in Chess... I started young too but I never had the disciple to get into competitive chess. Lately, thanks to Danya's speedruns I returned to Chess, hopefully I'll hit 1500 soon!
I thought this could be the greatest interview ever, and I was not disappointed.
Great interview! As a fan of chess part of me kind of wants to see Danya break through 2700 and play with the big boys in classical chess. But at the same time I completely understand why he doesn't want to play classical chess. I've never done it but it sure sounds pretty intense. I can't imagine playing chess 3-5 hours every day for 11 out of 14 days in a big tournament. Even in my local area the tournaments are like 8 hours long. Whereas online I play maximum 2 hours and usually 10-30 minutes. I find it more fun to be a casual player instead of a competitive player but I've got huge respect for the competitors out there who slug it out in these long tournaments or matches.

Awesome interview!!! Been following Daniel since TQG boom. Amazing watching his climb. First time I saw him he was streaming about some historical story about Ruy Lopez and the origins of that story. He really took off after those days.

Danya is so considerate as an interviewee. I've never seen an interviewee put in so much subtle effort to make the job of the interviewers so easy.
Yeah for real, he's one of the smoothest conversationalists I've ever seen in action, whether on the pod or in commentary or in any context. I haven't watched that Charisma on Command channel in forever and ever (they've been a little cringe for me now and then lol) but listening to this pod had me thinking that it'd be super fascinating to see them analyze how charismatic Danya is and how he's so good at keeping conversations balanced and engaging and flowy

It's been great having Fabi stream and learn he's human with a sense of humour & a talented communicator. He came across previously as a bit of a cold fish TBH.
I watched all the videos from Danya's channel and just now I learned that he has an older brother.
I think there is a big aspect to chess and mental health which has been overlooked in the discussion in this video.
People who start feeling hatred towards chess I think don't feel that way because of their wins or losses, (sure a recent streak of losses might speed things up).
I think they feel that way mainly because they have come to realisation at some point that they are probably missing out on something else in life and not only are they going to start hating themselves, but also the activity itself for all the time which they had "sunken" into it.
And I think the same holds true not only for chess but many other games and possibly even competitive sports or even studying.
