- A bit of a long video here, but as part of the back lawn renovation, I look to scarfiy, aerate and apply some liquid gypsum to try and floculate the clay in the lawn, and avoid a big drainage job.
Let's hope it's like Ronseal, and does exactly what it says on the tin (or drum in this case!)

Had the same problem after building an extension ruined the garden,I bought a tiller from screw fix 60 quid. Tillered the existing clay soil, added in some new top soil sand and the gypsum from Dr Russ, levelled and re seeded. Got to say after all the rain over the past few days the lawn is not holding any water, could be the gypsum but defo worth a pop 👍
Only just found this. Thanks so much for creating this video! Russ @ Eutrema
Thanks Russ! Hopefully I did the explanation justice!
looking forward to seeing if it made any difference ive been looking at but seems to good to be true
So am I. The caveat will always be that if the soil is not sodic it won't flocculate, but I believe I had success on the side.
Also the sand is an additional element, for for the 60/ 70 quid to trial it, hopefully it pays dividends!
I bought that Cobra Scarifier and the Moto-Tek Verticutter attachment.
VERY IMPRESSED with it, although swapping attachments is a pain.
I will be modifying mine to make it a quicker process.
The moto tek stuff looks good. Can't wait to try them personally
How do you manage to get any response from MOTO-TEK?

It looks great . So much better than grass. Adding sand is the cherry on top.
Getting some palm trees next week
@@TheReelMowingMowingClub What type? Trachycarpus are really great. I have some cordylines but they tend to get frost damage easily .
I also use the Cobra PLS66 66cm Push Lawn Sweeper to collect all the scarifying, works really well, loads easier. 👍🏼
I used the scarifier on a light setting! Fill the bag up in seconds. Was emptying every pass!
❤ loving the videos keep it up fella 👍
Cheers!
Wow Dan that looks a mammoth task, watching the video after a 6 day annual lads p!ss up in benidorm, so dont know if im taking it all in...good luck with it
Was a good few days work! Easier than when I dug up the front I'll tell you that!
Fingers crossed it comes through. However we've had a lot of rain and there's quite a bit of wash :(
Hope the holiday wasnt too lairy!
@TheReelMowingMowingClub been doing it for 25 years now Dan, every year gets a little harder 😄
Did the liquid gypsum and clay drainer did the trick? If so, how long did it take? Im applying the same things over my lawn the next week hopefully it does the trick. Its really compacted clay soil with minimal drainage.
Hi, I have just posted a follow up video now on how it's performed, and it looks like it's done a good job for versus what it was like last year.
Got a sweat on there mate, just think if you attempted that with a hand rake scarifier on those 270 square metres😂😂😂I did my mums back garden (seeded with johnsons prem pitch 10 days ago). And I found she had the same looking stuff as you did that the glyphosate did not kill, so I had to dig it away. I wonder if it is some variety of moss🤔
My mums took 8 days to getminate, finally started seeing green Saturday just gone. When I did mine last year in September I got germination after just four days.
Has your land sunk a bit in the top right corner? Seems to be a fair gap under the fencing there to ground🤔
Just a bit of a sweat! It was a lovely few days and glad I got the time off work to do it all.
For some reason I didn't sleep well afterwards! Maybe worrying on if pure grit sand is the best choice!
Got the wet weather now to keep the seed damp. However I have had a bit of wash which is annoying. But as long as I get signs of germination next week I'll be happy!
I was a weird plant but the scarifier dealt with it!
There's always been a bit of a gap in the fence, just more pronounced now there's no grass! Need to put some lower boards down!
@@TheReelMowingMowingClubnice mate, it is such a relief once you have seeded, and then know the hard work is done and you can just let nature take it's course. Did you top dress the seed and use a fleece Dan? Or just put the seed down on and leave as is, or is there another video to follow soon on that.
You'll have to wait and see!
@@TheReelMowingMowingClub always keeping us in suspenders🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
The green stuff that didn't die from the glyphosate is probably liverwort
Bingo! Yes. Thank you very much
Just googled it and the images look the same as what was there.
Covered in sand now so should be no more of an issue
DHLE drainage in a bag is quite good stuff
It probably is. Not used it myself and I could be completely wrong in saying it's a gypsum product. I'm assuming this based on other products that say will improve drainage and are gypsum based, but I cannot see on his site a material data sheet with the products
I have issues with one corner of my front garden with it being in the shade all the time and after watching one of DHL videos he uses a similar product to Angus MolTurf 1L - Concentrated Carbohydrate, I have some this coming and will start to apply but not sure if you have used this especially coming into the winter months
Hi Ian
Not used Molturf in winter months yet, but according to the description it suggests to apply once per month throughout the year.
It explains that it promotes more efficient use of nitrogen, so reading between the lines, with autumn fert being lower in nitrogen due to cutting frequency dry days and sunlight reducing, and not wanting to put lots on N down to push top growth, this should work in conjunction with the lower N feeds, allowing the plant to get more out of it, keeping the turf healthy.
It also helps improve fungus, disease and leatherjacket issues too.
I should have put some down when seeding!!!
@TheReelMowingMowingClub I know DHL uses something similar which is called Orb it and in one of the videos, he mentions this is great for shaded areas. Anyway got some coming today and will see how it goes
Do you think the gypsum will last? Or is it going to be the sort of product you have to apply each year?
I presume the flocculation will reducenover time and the soil goes back to its usual clay like make up
I would hope not. I would like to think that the flocculation process is in one direction, but only time will tell.
I think I mentioned in this vid, it could be snake oil and do nothing or I might have the wrong type of soil for proper flocculation (needs to be sodic soil and I think mine is based on a test" I did).
I applied this stuff the other day before we then got a months worth of rain. Hope it hasn't just washed it away! For what it's worth I applied 3.5l over 85m^2, diluted to 8l in a sprayer, then watered it in, then the heavens opened for 24hours. I'll hit it again in the spring. Drainage isn't so much my issue, just poor quality grass.
Hi James. The rain should have helped it to penetrate deeper into the profile, so that's a good thing. Drainage is my issue, and I think, along with the sand, has made a massive difference. A few spots where the levels are a bit low still pool after a heavy, heavy downpour, but these clear up shortly after. Just need to see some germination now!
@@TheReelMowingMowingClub Fingers crossed for you!
Floculation, floculation
Floculation, that's what you need
If you wanna beat the clay
Causing flooding everyday
Oh-oh floculation’s what you need;
If you wanna be a clay clump break-er, Oooooh
This takes me back to the days of Roy Castle, Cheryl Baker and in the latter years, Kris Akabusi AWLLL WIGHTTT
Did you choose gypsum because you didn't want to change your ph?
Chose gypsum as I had used the granular stuff before with apparently good results, but with this being a bigger area went for the liquid option to try and have a faster response. It may be working already alonng with the sand, with all the heavy rain we're having, it dosnet seem to be retaining as much water.
But will see how it looks in proper winter
Thank you for your reply!@@TheReelMowingMowingClub
Are you going to use the Johnson seed
